The New World screwworm has spread to the United States, prompting the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to partner with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The USDA awarded a combined $105 million to 40 different projects aimed at stopping the spread of New World Screwworm.

Some of these projects include dogs, artificial intelligence drones, and fungi.

Twelve animal cases of screwworm have been confirmed in Texas and New Mexico. The parasite has been confirmed in cattle, sheep, goats, and a dog. Of these 12 cases, 11 are currently active. No cases have been reported in wildlife yet.

New World Screwworm Cases Reported In US

According to data on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website, the New World screwworm (NWS) is a fly that lays its eggs in open wounds and body openings such as the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or genitals.

NWS eggs hatch into parasitic maggots that burrow into and feed on living tissue or flesh. You are at higher risk for NWS if you live or travel to areas where NWS flies are found, spend a lot of time outside where flies are, or have an open wound.

The partnership between the USDA and DHS would work to eradicate the screwworm parasite. “It’s going to a whole new level of partnership,” U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said during a call with reporters on Monday.

Rollins said that the US would use AI drones to monitor wildlife and enlist the help of 40 research projects that would be funded via a grant program launched earlier this year. Additionally, the agency said it is in talks to partner with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to deploy the AI-controlled drones.

 Other strategies could be employed as well, and the details of those would be forthcoming, according to a report by The Texas Tribune. 

“These are the kinds of innovations that will help us stay ahead of this pest and protect our food supply and our economy, protecting the way of life of our ranchers and go towards rebuilding our cattle herd to lower consumer prices on grocery store shelves,” Rollins said in a news release Tuesday. “We know we have tried-and-true tools and methods to defeat this pest, but we must constantly look for new and better methods and innovate our way to success.”

Well, that ceasefire certainly didn’t last long. As you will see below, there was extensive fighting in Lebanon on Monday. Those that believed that the “memorandum of understanding” would somehow magically bring peace to the Middle East have already been proven wrong. In many ways, it is starting to look a lot like 1938 all over again. We handed control of the Strait of Hormuz to the Iranians, we promised to shower them with billions of dollars in cash, but they won’t even get Hezbollah to stop shooting. The reason why they won’t get Hezbollah to stop shooting is because they don’t want Hezbollah to stop shooting until they can pressure the Trump administration to force Israel to withdraw all troops from Lebanon.

But no matter how much pressure the Trump administration puts on the Israelis, the truth is that they aren’t leaving…

Israel will remain in the “buffer zones” it has created in Lebanon, Gaza and Syria, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday.

“We will remain in the security belts as long as it takes to protect our country,” he said.

Israel has expanded its presence in southern Lebanon in recent weeks.

Hezbollah has fired thousands of rockets into northern Israel in 2026.

So there is no way that Israel is going to withdraw and allow Hezbollah to move their rocket launchers all the way up to the northern border.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir made this very clear in a statement that he issued on Monday…

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Monday said their country will not withdraw from land seized in Lebanon after the U.S. and Iran agreed to an initial agreement extending their ceasefire.

“Trump’s agreement does not bind us,” Ben-Gvir wrote on the social platform X in a post translated from Hebrew. “Israel is not subject to the United States, and we are an independent and sovereign nation!”

“We must not compromise on anything less than the dismantling of Hezbollah, we must not withdraw from any territory that our fighters have captured and cleared of terror infrastructure, we must not return to a situation where thousands of terrorists sit on the fences of northern settlements, and certainly we must not remain silent for a moment in the face of fire directed at the State of Israel,” he later wrote.

And Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that if Iran attempts to intervene again “we will strike it with full force”…

“Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and I are leading a clear policy that determines that the IDF will remain in the security zones in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, without any time limit, to protect the border and Israeli communities from there against jihadist elements,” Katz said in his statement on Monday.

“We will not compromise on Israel’s security interests and the protection of our citizens, and we will not withdraw from the security zones,” he said. “If Iran attacks Israel because of the events in Lebanon, we will strike it with full force.”

Katz said Israel will proceed with its plan to clear the buffer zone of civilian residents, and then “all terror infrastructure, above and below ground, including the houses in the contact-line villages that served as terror outposts, will be destroyed.”

So this puts us back in the same position we were a few days ago before the “memorandum of understanding” was signed.

If Hezbollah fires more rockets into northern Israel, the Israelis are likely to bomb southern Beirut again.

And if southern Beirut gets bombed again, Iran could fire more ballistic missiles at Israel.

According to the Iranians, the “territorial integrity” of Lebanon must be respected if the memorandum of understanding is to succeed…

The spokesman reiterated that Lebanon and ending the war in that country are an inseparable component of the war-ending understanding between Iran and the US and said Iran has demonstrated both determination and seriousness on the issue and will continue to monitor developments carefully.

Addressing references to Lebanon in the memorandum, Baghaei said the word “Lebanon” appears three times in the text.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Baghaei added that the memorandum explicitly refers to ending the war in a way that includes Lebanon and emphasizes respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Iranians want all Israeli troops out.

So they are going to keep encouraging Hezbollah to keep shooting.

The Iranians are hoping that President Trump will put so much pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he will be forced to withdraw the troops.

But as I have already noted, that simply is not going to happen.

As a result, the fighting will continue with no end in sight.

On Monday, Hezbollah admitted that they had targeted Israeli forces numerous times…

Israel and Hezbollah continued fighting on Monday, with both the Israeli military and the Lebanese Shiite militant group claiming responsibility for strikes in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah said in two separate messages on Telegram on Monday that it had targeted Israeli tanks and vehicles with drones, rocket launchers and artillery shells. It said that clashes were “ongoing.”

In response, Israeli forces took out Hezbollah militants that “posed a threat”…

Hezbollah fired several rockets at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon a short while ago, the military says, one of several attacks carried out by the terror group today.

The IDF also confirms striking Hezbollah operatives who “posed a threat” to forces in southern Lebanon today.

According to the military, the rockets fired at Israeli forces a short while ago were intercepted by air defenses. No sirens sounded in any towns in Israel.

This isn’t what “peace in the Middle East” looks like.

Many pro-Iranian pundits are hoping that Israel will be more likely to give in to Iranian demands once Benjamin Netanyahu is no longer in power.

But I wouldn’t count on that.

Naftali Bennett is probably the most likely candidate to become the next prime minister of Israel, and he is pledging that “the clock for regime change in Iran will start” as soon as he takes office…

Former prime minister Naftali Bennett said on Monday that Iranian regime change will start when Israel has a new government.

“The clock for regime change in Iran will start as soon as the government in Israel is changed,” said Bennett. “The leadership is a disappointment.”

As long as the radical Shiite regime in Iran exists, this war will never be over.

The Iranians keep telling us that they have no intention of developing nuclear weapons, but many experts are absolutely convinced that the Iranians have been continuing their nuclear work at a secret facility that is very deep underneath Pickaxe Mountain.

By the way, the U.S. and Israel have not even attempted to bomb that facility for some reason.

Perhaps that is because it is so deep that bunker-busters wouldn’t even have a prayer of touching it.

The Iranians have been reinforcing tunnel entrances and strengthening security perimeters at Pickaxe Mountain, and top Iranian officials have been regular visitors.

If that facility is not being used for nuclear work, what is it being used for?

The Iranians have never changed.

We are being told that the head of the IRGC, Ahmad Vahidi, plans to “take the money” that we are offering to Iran.

But once he has the money, there is apparently a plan to “play the exact same game” with the Bab al-Mandeb Strait…

Of course he was dead wrong, and we all know what occurred next.

Here in 2026, we are being told that the “memorandum of understanding” will finally bring peace to the Middle East.

After having heard the same line many, many times before – and yet with no result (instead, more often the opposite of sliding into further conflict and escalation) – Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday welcomed the “progress” made between the United States and Iran in indirect negotiations.

CNN and other mainstream outlets are reporting on this “hint” that an interim deal is taking shape (again). But given the pattern and track record of such reporting, which has consistently proven premature, elusive, and often downright false, it’s hard not to have cynicism and to see much of this as but crude propaganda aimed at keeping energy prices down.

“Both sides welcomed the progress achieved through sustained diplomatic engagement and expressed hope that these efforts will soon lead to a durable understanding and peaceful resolution,” according to Pakistan’s readout of a Foreign Ministry call with the European Union’s chief diplomat.

And yet, the message out of Iran does not suggest positive momentum or the beginnings of any kind of deal taking shape – though it remains that anything is possible (depending on how much either side is willing to ‘give up’ their respective red lines and firm positions).

Iran is currently saying the Strait of Hormuz is ‘firmly’ under IRGC control – an assertion the Pentagon has vehemently rejected, with Iranian Admiral Habibollah Sayyari saying it continues to wield “power” over the Gulf region.

“The west of the Strait of Hormuz, the strait itself, and the Persian Gulf are under the firm control of the IRGC Navy,” Sayyari was quoted as saying in state media. “No vessel can enter without our permission.” Another commander also asserted that “We have had and continue to have power in the region” – batting down Trump’s words which say Iran’s military has been utterly defeated and decimated at this stage.

But again, returning to the optimistic Friday reports, which may have no basis in reality whatsoever (time will tell), CNN is going so far as to report on the venue of a signing ceremony for a Tehran-Washington Memorandum of Understanding:

A signing ceremony for a memo of understanding with Iran would most likely be held in Geneva, Switzerland, three sources told CNN on Friday. That signing could take place as early as Sunday, according to a person familiar with plans.

That comes after US President Donald Trump on Thursday touted a “great settlement” that could resolve the war with Iran, suggesting it would be finalized in the coming days. Trump said he anticipated a signing ceremony for the document soon, potentially in Europe, to be attended by Vice President JD Vance. However, Iranian officials have yet to confirm an agreement has been reached.

Two sources with knowledge of the diplomatic talks said the signing ceremony would be held in Geneva – not far from where Trump and a US delegation will attend a G7 summit next week in France. One of those sources said a signing ceremony would mark the start of “phase two” of diplomatic talks, as officials work through the implementation of the memo of understanding.

Multiple sources said the memo is being called the “Islamabad declaration,” in recognition of the key mediating role Pakistan played. But nothing has been confirmed, and an Iranian source suggested the Austrian capital Vienna was also being considered.

But the nature of the MoU would likely just involve committing to a framework basis on which both sides would get back to the negotiating table, and not yet necessarily a final, lasting peace deal. Iranian state media on Friday did seem in agreement that there’s been some level of progress on at least getting back to formal talks based on an MoU, per Bloomberg:

Iran’s semi-official news agency Mehr said the countries are negotiating an agreement in which the strait would be reopened within 30 days under Iranian arrangements. Under a draft agreement, the US would have no role in the future management of the strait and Iran would make no commitment to transfer control or restore conditions that existed before the US and Israeli attacks, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has meanwhile rejected media speculations regarding an agreement and reaffirmed Iran’s resolute and principled stance, per Mehr. He stated: “Textually, the text has almost been finalized in its major parts. The problem is that the contradictory positions of the United States have always caused turbulence and disruption in this process.”

In terms of even rhetoric alone, the two sides still seem very far apart:

President Trump on Thursday insisted the U.S. was nearing a deal on peace talks with Iran, pulling back from his threats just hours earlier to launch more military strikes and seize Iran’s oil infrastructure.

Trump said Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had signed off on the plan, which he said would be completed in coming days, paving the way for additional talks on Iran’s nuclear program.

Tehran said it hadn’t decided. “Iran hasn’t reached a final conclusion about the agreement,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said, according to state media. “We will announce it when we reach a conclusion.”

More hurdles are in the details:

Iran’s IRNA news agency reports the issue of US sanctions on Iran will be left for after the signing of the memorandum of understanding and a 60-day deadline for conducting peace negotiations.

“Iran does not offer any commitments in the memorandum regarding the nuclear issue, and the other party does not commit to lifting the sanctions,” it said.

“If Tehran decides to sign the memorandum, some of its frozen funds will be released immediately, and the rest gradually.”

Tehran reaffirms its position in the following fresh statement:

“Contrary to what is being circulated by Western media, Iran will not commit to relinquishing control of the Strait of Hormuz. The only matter referred to in the memorandum of understanding is the return of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz after the end of the war,” Iran’s state media reported.

“The main objective of signing the memorandum of understanding is to end the war on all fronts”, it added.

All of this comes during a week that started with Iran and the US renewing a state of active fighting, and with Gulf states coming under Iranian ballistic missile attack, in retaliation for the latest waves of major US Tomahawk strikes against Iran.

Still, Bloomberg and others are reporting the following: “US and Iran Nearing a Peace Deal Around G7 Meeting Next Week.” What can be said except we’ve been here before, and time will tell. Did Trump cancel yesterday’s planned strikes because a deal is really finally being forged?

We have been warned for a long time that a nightmarish global food crisis was coming. We are facing an unprecedented fertilizer shortage, extremely high diesel prices and long-term droughts in many of the most important food producing regions of the world, and now a “Super El Niño” is in the forecast. So a lot of experts have been projecting that we would experience a very serious global food crisis beginning in the second half of this year, but the truth is that it is already here.

In fact, even the mainstream media is openly admitting that it is already here. The following comes from a Telegraph article entitled “The hunger crisis experts warned about is here – and it’s about to get worse”…

Pregnant women in Kabul, sheep-herders outside of Modigushi, the urban-poor in Colombo. As the war in Iran passes 100 days, these are the people on the front line of a new hunger crisis.

Months ago, the UN cautioned that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz would push millions into hunger; now they say their worst fears are materialising.

A report produced by the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN’s food-assistance branch, found that 45 million additional people now face “critical” levels of food insecurity as a direct result of the war in the Gulf.

Officials with the World Food Program are having an “I told you so” moment.

They warned that if the Strait of Hormuz did not get reopened this would happen, and now they are being proven correct…

“We told the world the closure of the Strait was going to have a massive impact,” Dr Jean-Martin Bauer, the World Food Programme’s director of food security analysis, told The Telegraph.

“There have been impacts on energy markets, on trade, on shipping, and all these are combining to create this cost of living crisis affecting millions of people.”

In impoverished nations all over the planet, hunger is rapidly growing.

For example, just consider what has been going on in Somalia…

The proportion of Somali households that can no longer afford what the UN calls the “basic food basket” – things like cooking oil and grains – has risen from 47 to 60 per cent in late 2025, according to the WFP’s analysis.

It means ultimately an additional 2.5 million people in Somalia could be unable to afford a basic food basket by the end of the year.

Of course this is just the beginning.

Globally, a lot less nitrogen fertilizer will be used this year as a result of the crisis in the Middle East, and one UN official is telling us that the effect this is having on food production is becoming “increasingly visible”…

The greatest risk of the Strait of Hormuz closure for the agri-food industry is not an immediate food shortage, but a fertilizer and production shock. This was the opinion of the UN FAO’s director-general, Qu Dongyu, speaking at the 181st Session of the FAO Council (June 8–12). As the crisis hit its 100-day mark, he said the effects of the crisis on farmers globally are “increasingly visible.”

Dongyu gave recommendations for countries to address the impacts of the Strait of Hormuz crisis, particularly “the urgent need for efficient fertilizer use” as global agri-food systems face “unprecedented challenges.” Farmers across Asia, Africa, and Latin America are grappling with higher production costs and “difficult choices regarding fertilizer use and crop decisions,” he said.

It really doesn’t matter if the U.S. and Iran can reach some sort of an agreement now or not.

The damage that has been done to the spring planting season in the northern hemisphere is irreversible at this stage.

And now a “Super El Niño” is coming.

In fact, the beginning of El Niño conditions has been confirmed in the equatorial waters of the Pacific Ocean…

A long-anticipated and dramatic global climate shift has arrived, federal forecasters said June 11 as they confirmed the start of El Niño conditions.

The announcement also adds to mounting evidence suggesting this El Niño will be unusually strong, potentially supercharging droughts, heavy rainfall events and heat waves.

Now we shall wait to see how strong this El Niño will become.

Many are forecasting that it will be the strongest El Niño of all time, and if that turns out to be the case global food shortages will almost certainly get a whole lot worse.

Here in the United States, “a drier, warmer summer” is expected for the major food producing areas in our heartland…

There is potential for a drier, warmer summer across the Northwest, northern Plains, and the Upper Midwest, prolonging ongoing drought in some areas and increasing wildfire risk, according to AccuWeather. Overall, El Niño increases the chances of above-average temperatures across the northern and western United States.

We are already in the midst of an epic multi-year drought.

How much drier can things possibly get?

Unfortunately, conditions are expected to be exceedingly dry in other “breadbaskets” around the world too.

So brace yourself for much higher prices for wheat, corn, rice and barley in the months ahead.

This will have a dramatic impact in poor countries all over the planet, but it will also significantly affect us here in the United States too.

According to a recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, we have already been witnessing a “remarkable increase in food insecurity” among low income U.S. households…

A new economic report identified a “remarkable” rise in food insecurity, potentially explaining gloomy consumer outlooks despite strong economic fundamentals.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York released a report on Wednesday identifying uncertain access to adequate food and consumer pessimism on the rise in certain vulnerable groups across the country.

The report, which relies on newly collected data from the Survey of Consumer Expectations (SCE), found a “remarkable increase in food insecurity, particularly among lower-educated and lower-income households and households with young children.”

It also identified “a contemporaneous increase in pessimism among the same groups, along with a sharp decline in job-finding expectations.”

If food prices continue to soar, what is that going to mean for millions of U.S. households that already struggle to put food on the table?

I wish that I could get more people to understand that this is really happening.

In this generation, we have never seen as much hunger among l0w income U.S. households as we are witnessing now, and the truth is that conditions are going to get a whole lot worse.

There is no magic button that can be pushed that is going to fix this.

The food crisis that we were all warned about has arrived, and the vast majority of the population is completely unprepared for it.
