If you’re traveling for the holidays, you should carry a get-home bag in case you get stranded or run into bad weather. Check out our tips below to learn how to make your own.

Essential Items for Your Get-Home Bag

1. Pack one bag for each person.
2. Pack the basics: food, water, and clothing.
3. Have light sources such as headlamps or flashlights. Bring a fire starter too.
4. Keep a prepared map with routes marked. Use a small compass to assist.
5. Bring a paracord.
6. Have a multi-tool on hand, or a survival knife.
7. Keep first-aid paraphernalia close to you.

As we move into the holiday season, it’s more and more common to find yourself far away from home. Whether you’re flying to meet up with your family or heading out for the day to celebrate with some friends, travel is almost always involved.

As we travel more, the danger of a disaster or emergency situation happening when you’re away from home becomes all too real.

Sure, you have your bug-out bag and possibly even a full-home prep waiting at your house, but that doesn’t do you any good if you’re not there to use it.

What you need is a way to get home and deal with the situation at hand. Whether that means bugging-in or bugging out and hitting the road again, home is truly where the heart is.

Because of this, you need what’s known as a get-home bag. We’ve looked at get-home bags before for basic use and for vacations, but things change when you’re traveling around the holidays, especially during colder months.

Let’s take a look at how to make a quick yet effective get-home bag to use for all your holiday needs this year and beyond.

Before You Start

1. Know how many people you’re packing for.

When building a get-home bag, you need to know how many people would be trying to get home with you. If you’re on your own, your bag will look very different than if you have a few people you are responsible for.

2. Pack a separate get-home bag for each person.

The best case scenario is to put together separate bags with necessities for each person to help spread out the liability in case a bag is lost or damaged.

Plus, they’re easy to carry. Have a backup of the slightly less important items if possible and have a second person carry them as added insurance.

3. Keep things simple.

Remember, we’re not looking to make this a foolproof survival bag, but instead a way to get you home to your real prep without looking like you’re packing an entire suitcase of things just to go to Grandma’s house.

This isn’t meant to keep you surviving for a long period of time, but instead solely to get you home safely.

Get-Home Bag Contents

Because we’re just trying to get home, a get-home bag will have much less than a traditional BOB. This being said, the makeup of both the get-home bag and the BOB can be very similar.

1. Water

You should have one liter of water for every person you’re prepping for.

This should be enough to get you going for a day or two. Longer distances mean more water.

2. Energy Bars

The need for long-term food isn’t very important since the goal is to get home to your supplies, so the plan is for 3 energy bars per day for each person.

Think about how long it would take to get back home by walking or driving and plan accordingly. Mind you, this is far from a well-rounded diet, but it’ll be enough to get you home, and that’s all that matters.

If you’re traveling from farther away than 3 or so days’ walk, this still applies, but know that you will definitely need to find supplies on the way home, as it’s simply not feasible to carry enough food for weeks of travel time while going on a trip.

3. Headlamp(s)

The hurry to get home means there will be a lot of walking at night, so having your hands free to eat, climb, and use a weapon are vital, and a headlamp will give you just that.

In a perfect world each person would have a headlamp, but to keep the pack small, one should be enough for two people.

4. Flashlights

The flashlight goes to whoever isn’t using the headlamp because you should have a second light for backup.

Light can mean the difference between walking safely at night and falling into a ditch, breaking an ankle or worse.

5. Map and Compass

This is possibly the single most important part of a good get-home bag. You should have a map that covers the area from where you’re visiting to your home.

On the map should be two plotted routes: the path you’d take with a car and the best path for walking. Remember, the highway might not be your best bet for walking, so plan that out now while you have the Internet as a resource.

Make sure you’re prepared to use a map and compass, and finally it doesn’t hurt to learn how to navigate without a compass, too.

As stated above, it’s best practice to give one person the map and the other the compass; in case you get separated, you would each have at least something to help you get home safely.

6. Paracord

It should go without saying that you basically always need to keep paracord close at hand.

You should have about 100 feet of the amazing rope in your bag to use for everything from lashing a shelter together to sewing up damaged bags and clothing.

7. Multi-Tool

Ideally you should have your multi-tool on you at all times as part of your EDC, but since we’re talking about a family trip where you may be dressed nicely, it’s OK to keep this in your bag, as long as it’s easy to get to.

The best practice here is to have a knife/multi-tool for each person you’re traveling with.

8. Personal Defense

This is a tricky one. Since many vacations take you across state borders, you need to know the laws regarding the transportation of weapons.

More often than not you should be safe transporting a handgun if it’s unloaded and partially disassembled in your bag. Some states require it to be locked in a box as well, so just check the laws to make sure you’re working inside of what’s legal while staying prepared.

Take Note: It’s critical that you know the laws of transporting weapons in the states and municipalities you’re traveling through. Simply having a weapon in the car can mean jail time in some states.

9. Survival Knife

Your survival knife definitely needs to come along for vacation and will be indispensable in an emergency. Make sure your knife is sharpened and ready for use before leaving.

10. Fire Starter

A simple flint and steel will do wonderfully and take up very little space. You can store these without fear of combustion, unlike lighters and matches. Your get-home bag should have two of these so there’s a backup.

11. First Aid Kit

All you need here is a basic first-aid kit that aligns with where you’re going. If you’re heading down south, you should make sure it has bug repellant and sunscreen in it as well as the other basics like bandages.

Since the holidays are typically colder months, consider including some instant hand warmers.

12. Rain Poncho

Finally, you definitely need to include a rain poncho. This will keep you dry in the case of rain and give you shelter for sleeping at night. Each person should have their own.

As you can see, everything you need to hopefully get home safely can fit into a standard, nondescript backpack, which is exactly what you want.

By blending in, you won’t attract the attention of anyone who sees you carrying it. Leave the camo and military-style bags behind and opt for a traditional backpack that’s both comfortable and has great storage capability. Your stuff will be safe and nobody will know what you’ve got.

It’s as simple as that,” said Biden in remarks given at the White House Tribal Nations Summit on Wednesday, December 6th, in Washington, D.C. “Frankly, I think it’s stunning we have gotten to this point in the first place. Republicans in Congress are willing to give Putin the greatest gift he could hope for and abandon our global leadership.”

“We can’t let Putin win. If Putin takes Ukraine, he won’t stop there,” claimed Biden, who warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin would continue to threaten and possibly invade other Eastern European nations, including members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which would trigger the security alliance’s rule demanding that other NATO member nations come to their defense. “We’ll have something that we don’t seek and that we don’t have today: American troops fighting Russian troops.”

Biden’s rhetoric is getting more and more intense as the rulers seek to expand all wars by whatever means necessary.  And he wasn’t the only dictator to claim Americans are going to war if they don’t agree to more funding.  Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin gave members of Congress a similar warning during a private briefing with lawmakers, claiming that a lack of American aid for Ukraine would “very likely” lead to United States troops fighting a war in Europe.

House Foreign Affairs Chairman Michael McCaul, a Republican from Texas, reported that Austin claimed that after the conflict in Ukraine, he could go on to take over Moldova, a non-NATO member neighboring Romania, and Georgia in the South Caucasus.

“And then the idea that we’ll have to put troops on the ground, in Secretary Austin’s word, was very likely,” reported McCaul. –Natural News

This looks like it’s the overall goal anyway, so why hold it over the public’s head? Eventually, the ruling class will demand their slaves kill or be killed and unless massive disobedience takes place, we’ll see a bloody all-out global war.

For only the third time in his 53 year ministry, Pastor John Kilpatrick has issued an urgent prophetic warning to the public.  The first warning came just before 9/11, the second warning came just before the COVID pandemic, and now this new warning is the third one.  Kilpatrick has ominously declared that “the land is going to manifest the sins that are proliferating” in our nation.  He says that there will be problems with “earthquakes”, “volcanoes” and “the weather”.  Of course this lines up perfectly with what Perry Stone was just shown and with what I warn about in my latest books.  Our planet is becoming increasingly unstable, and we will soon witness unprecedented shaking.

In a recent sermon, Pastor John Kilpatrick unfolded a profound revelation concerning the connection between sin and the Earth’s manifestations. Pastor Kilpatrick, prompted by the Holy Spirit, emphasized the need to warn people about the signs taking place globally, shedding light on the spiritual perspective that sin affects the Earth profoundly.

The pastor highlighted the crucial distinction between divine actions and the consequences of the fall of Adam and Eve. He stressed the direct connection between the state of the land and humanity, linking them through the impact of sin. The message echoed the idea that the Earth, affected by the fall, is now manifesting events that grab the world’s attention.

Drawing attention to the increasing prevalence of sin, Pastor Kilpatrick noted the rise of blatant rebellion against God, indicating a significant shift in societal values. He connected this surge in lawlessness to the prophesied manifestation of the Earth in response to the prevailing sin.

He is right.

Tremendous natural disasters will happen on U.S. soil.

During the years ahead, there will be tsunamis on both coasts, the New Madrid fault zone will be ripped wide open, there will be a massive eruption of Mt. Rainier, and “the Big One” will hit California.

Speaking of “the Big One”, one recent earthquake in southern California was felt so keenly that Disneyland was forced to shut down a number of their rides…

Disneyland was forced to shut a number of rides at its theme park in Anaheim, California, on Monday night, following a 3.5 magnitude earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake striking at around 8:09 p.m., with the epicenter recorded at just over a mile east of Fullerton—two miles north of Disneyland. A smaller aftershock was reported to have struck at around 8:30 p.m.

Prophetically, there is now nothing that needs to take place before “the Big One” absolutely devastates the state of California.

So keep a very close eye on the west coast.

Meanwhile, lots of other weird stuff is happening elsewhere.

For example, some parts of Mexico are being ravaged by “miles-long clouds of locusts”…

Miles-long clouds of locusts have been blanketing the skies above the state of Yucatán this week, flying through shopping plazas, smacking into the windows of apartment complexes and gobbling up anything green in local parks.

Social media users and the Mexican press both asked the same question: Is this a sign the world is coming to an end?

That is certainly something that I did not expect.

And this week we were warned that Earth’s magnetic field may be getting ready to “flip”…

The Earth’s magnetic field plays a big role in protecting people from hazardous radiation and geomagnetic activity that could affect satellite communication and the operation of power grids. And it moves.

Scientists have studied and tracked the motion of the magnetic poles for centuries. The historical movement of these poles indicates a change in the global geometry of the Earth’s magnetic field. I would encourage you to keep your eyes open for stories about Earth’s magnetic field, because this will eventually become an enormous story.

We are going to see so much happen in the geophysical realm in the days ahead, and as Pastor John Kilpatrick has explained, this is linked with all of the great evil that is rapidly exploding all around us.

Our society is going downhill really fast at this point.

And it makes me very sad to say that even our churches are going downhill very fast.  For example, a Baptist church in Virginia is actually hosting a concert that will feature a drag queen named “Flamy Grant”…

What in the world has happened to us?

America has been given many years to repent, but there has been no national repentance.

So now judgment is on the way.

In some of our largest cities, highly organized groups of criminals are constantly invading homes.  Of course when these thieves encounter a homeowner that is actually armed it can result in a deadly confrontation…

A homeowner shot and killed a home invasion suspect in Los Angeles early Saturday morning while a grandmother and toddler were in the house in the fifth such crime reported in the area in the space of 10 days.

Officers were called to a home in the Granada Hills section of the San Fernando Valley, north of Beverly Hills, around 5am on Saturday after someone reported a ‘hot prowl’ – a burglary where the homeowner is present.

‘The officers’ preliminary investigation determined that approximately three to four armed males in their 20s entered the home with the intent to burglarize the location,’ according to LAPD officials.

Once upon a time, Los Angeles was such a beautiful city.

But now it is covered from one end to the other in filth, trash and drug paraphernalia.

Of course much of this degradation is being fueled by drug addiction.

We are in the midst of the worst drug crisis in the entire history of our country, and many addicts have made theft a lifestyle in order to fund their addictions.

In addition to robbing homes, these addicts are constantly smashing into vehicles, and they are one of the biggest reasons why retail theft has soared to unprecedented heights…

New York City has led the US with the sharpest increase in the number of reported shoplifting incidents since before the pandemic, according to a study.

The Big Apple saw a 64% increase in reported incidents of retail theft during the four-year period between mid-2019 and June of this year, while Los Angeles experienced a 61% surge in the same metric, according to the Council on Criminal Justice.

This is not what a civilized society looks like.

In Bellevue, Washington, so many vehicles are being stolen that the police are literally giving away steering wheel locks in a desperate attempt to bring auto theft down…

The Bellevue Police Department is giving away steering wheel locks Sunday, December 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bellevue Crossroads Substation.

“The effort comes as auto thefts have been on the rise in Bellevue and across the region,” said BPD.

BPD said Bellevue has had a 29% increase in car thefts in 2023 through October.

BPD has seen a 762% and 730% increase in theft of Kias and Hyundais.

I honestly do not understand why people still want to live in these big cities.

According to one recent survey, 40 percent of Americans are now “afraid to walk alone at night near their home”.

Millions of Americans live in a constant state of fear because our nation is absolutely teeming with predators and drug addicts.

During his recent debate with Gavin Newsom, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pulled out the infamous “poop map” that shows reports of human feces on the streets of San Francisco…

During Thursday night’s debate between Gavin Newsom (D) and Ron DeSantis (R), the Florida governor busted out the San Francisco ‘poop map’ created by OpenTheBooks.

The map, created in 2019, plotted nearly 120,000 case reports of human feces on the streets of San Francisco between 2011 and 2019 using the city’s open records portal and 311 call information posted by city officials.

This is our country now.

It is being reported that the foreign-born population in the U.S. has now reached a whopping 49.5 million people…

Analysis by Steven Camarota and Karen Zeigler at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) revealed that in October the foreign-born population reached almost 50 million, increasing by 4.5 million foreign-born residents since Biden took office in January 2021.

How do you think the drug cartels in Mexico make so much money?

They make millions upon millions of dollars by selling drugs to us.

And our leaders refuse to secure our borders year after year.

Pre-Dinner Expectations…

Dinner time was making me nervous.

I was trying to keep my expectations in check as the family gathered around the table.

No, the evening’s dish wasn’t hot dogs and baloney (I know the kids would eat that crap).

It was a menu I chose.

And one I wasn’t sure the kids would like.

No matter what the packaging tries to sell (with its professional “perfect” meal photos), freeze dried food can’t hold a candle to a home-cooked meal.

Yes, I’m aware that’s an unfair comparison.

To me, there’s nothing like a delicious homemade meal.

And freeze-dried food can’t compare, right? Maybe…

But, to be honest, “taste” shouldn’t be your main reason to buy freeze-dried survival food.

No, we invest for its:

1. Convenient bulk calories
2. Extreme longevity
3. Secure packaging

Taste is more of an afterthought.

It’s a nice bonus.

It’s the cherry on top.

Because if you’re ever truly forced to eat lots of freeze-dried survival food, you’ll be so hungry an old shoe would taste amazing.

With survival food, taste matters only after other important aspects (packaging, calories, nutrition, price).

Because, in general, I’d rather store survival food that lasts a crazy long time but tastes bland.

I’d rather have survival food with all the essential nutrients your body needs.

But it tastes like unseasoned mush.

Why? Because if you’re facing starvation, even the worst-tasting food miraculously turns into a 5-star meal.

I don’t buy survival food to enjoy a meal.

I buy survival food to survive.

So why even perform a taste test with the family?

Why not just buy on price, nutrients, and calories – those are “more important” criteria, right?

Because if it does taste good today – it’ll taste amazing when I need it.

Again, the taste is not the primary reason for your purchase.

But it’s also nice to know exactly what you’re getting.

Choosing Our Meals

A few days ago, we’d just received an Emergency Food Bucket from Legacy with eight meals in it.

For this review, we picked two freeze-dried meals out of eight choices:

Pasta Alfredo, Pasta Primavera, Enchilada (beans and rice), Stroganoff, Cheese and Broccoli Bake, Chili Mac, Cheese, and Broccoli Soup Mix, Classic Chili Mix

I laid them out and let my wife choose one, I choose the other.

She picked Stroganoff; I went with Pasta Alfredo.

Legacy’s Food Bucket

Now, before I move on to the meal packaging and the cooking, I want to take a minute to discuss the bucket.

Simply put, the food bucket is a very nice bonus.

It’s a 15-liter, white #5 plastic bucket with a handle.

It’s lightweight but robust—a great combination for stacking and protecting your food stockpile investment.

No complaints about the bucket; it’s a nice addition.

The bucket came with a security seal.

What I like about this is with survival food, you’re not planning to use it often.

So, you can leave this seal when you first store your food, and it’ll help keep the bucket free from rodents or pests.

Just leave the seal on until you’re ready to use your survival food, even if that’s a decade from now.

The other nice feature is the handle.

This makes for super convenient hauling.

But I must ask myself – “How often do I plan on hauling my survival food around?”

The answer for me – is NEVER (if I can help it).

So, while the handle initially seems like an important feature, I’d prefer not to have to pay extra.

That’s just me.

The handle might be a big selling point for someone else.

If you’re bugging in, you’ll likely only use the handles two times in your life (once to store it and once to retrieve it).

However, if you’re bugging out by vehicle, the handle may come in handy.

If you’re practicing your escape plan, the handle is nice since you may use it a few times a year.

Legacy’s Food Pouches

Let’s talk about their meal pouches.

The front of each package has an image of several foods.

Each image is identical no matter the food that’s in the package.

It looks like they are showing macaroni and cheese, broccoli soup, chili, and Alfredo pasta.

For example:

The Stroganoff package does not have an image of the stroganoff you’re about to eat.

Not a deal-breaker, but worth noting.

The black, bold lettering denotes the actual meal inside in the upper right-hand corner.

You can’t miss it.

There’s also the net weight number in the lower left-hand corner and the 100% quality guaranteed emblem on the bottom left.

On the back, there’s the typical “Nutrition Facts” table, cooking directions, ingredient list, allergens, etc.

Fairly standard stuff.

Shelf Life Guarantee?

One omission I noticed on the packaging was a shelf life statement.

Another food storage company I reviewed included a shelf life note on the package.

Now, Legacy has an “Up To 25 Year Shelf Life” image on their website.

A similar statement I’ve seen with most freeze-dried meal companies.

However, I’m always curious – if the food only lasts 1 year, does it still meets that “up to 25 years” requirement?

The key is the use of the words “up to.”

Technically, 1 year is in that “up to 25 years” range…

So basically, it sounds like a meaningless phrase that makes the buyers feel warm and fussy but doesn’t hold anyone accountable.

Again, this is not just Legacy Foods – nearly all the other companies use this same confusing verbiage.

FAQ

Then I found the FAQ section on their site.

Here’s what they have to say about their foods longevity:

• How long can Legacy’s Premium meals be stored?
• When kept in optimum conditions as outlined above, freeze-dried food can be stored safely and securely for up to 25 years with no need for rotation.
• What is the best way to store freeze-dried food?
• Like any food storage, freeze-dried food is best preserved when stored in a cool, dark place that maintains a fairly consistent temperature.

Properly Store Your Survival Food

So basically, what they are saying is their freeze-dried food has the potential to last 25 years (maybe even longer).

But it is highly dependent on how YOU store it.

If you store it in a place that floods, harbors rodents, and is blazing hot in the summer, the food will go bad well before 25 years.

So make sure you know how to store your survival food to protect your investment for the long haul.

But in general, freeze-dried food tends to last a long time when stored properly.

Plus, the meal pouches look both solid and reliable.

It has a broad, tight seal all the way around the edges.

Also, the pouch material used is Mylar.

So as long as the seal stays intact, the air inside the pouch will be completely isolated from the air outside.

That’s the power of Mylar bags.

After opening the package, you must fish around the freeze-dried food to remove the oxygen absorber.

This square pouch attracts and absorbs oxygen.

So, when paired with air-isolating Mylar, the oxygen absorber eliminates nearly all the oxygen inside after the food is packaged.

Another method of removing oxygen from packing is to flush the oxygen out with another gas like nitrogen.

Based on their website, this is also a method they use as well.

Between the oxygen absorber and the nitrogen flush, you’re left with nearly no oxygen left in the sealed pouch.

The less oxygen, the better since oxygen is necessary to grow mold.

So, if you remove all the oxygen, you also eliminate the possibility of mold growth.

Obviously, desirable for long-term survival food storage.

Now, you do have to remove the oxygen absorbers before you cook your meal.

They’re not something you want to cook and accidentally eat.

You want to remove the oxygen absorber before you dump the meal into the boiling water.

Trust me; I learn this lesson the hard way.

In one of the meal pouches, I was struggling to find the absorber, so I thought maybe it was left out…

So, I dumped the meal into the boiling water, and there it was.

Then I had to carefully get the absorber out of the boiling hot water without getting scolded.

And then explained to my 3 ½-year-old daughter, this was a “Daddy only” job and that she should never mess with hot boiling water.

Kids.

So next time, I’ll be dumping the food into a bowl first, then removing the oxygen absorber before adding it to the boiling water.

Lesson learned – don’t make the same mistake.

Cooking Freeze Dried Meals

By the way, cooking freeze-dried meals is in the running for the “easiest task in the world.”

• Measure water and put it in a pot
• Bring water to boil
• Add meal
• Whisk and reduce heat to medium
• Wait for 12 – 15 minutes (stirring occasionally)
• Remove from heat and wait for 3 – 5 minutes
• Serve

It was so easy.

However, in an emergency, this easy task might become a bit more challenging (depending on the nature of the emergency).

If electricity and natural gas are unavailable (a real possibility), you won’t be cooking on your lovely kitchen stove.

Instead, you’ll have to find an alternative survival cooking method – like getting a portable stove.

It was so easy; I had my 3 ½ years old help me (she’s so proud of the ½).

The Taste Test

My 10-month-old son started happily shoveling it in as fast as his little-uncoordinated hands allowed it.

But to be honest, he’ll eat just about anything you put in front of him.

The real test was my 3 ½-year-old daughter – if she doesn’t like something, it’s game over.

With food, she can be picky and stubborn (she gets the picky from Mom, but the stubborn part – that’s all me).

So, I was pleasantly surprised by my daughter’s reaction to our survival food dinner:

“Hey, Dad, this is gooood!” Followed by her new favorite kid quote, “it’s yum yum yummy in my tum tum tummy.”

So, congratulations, Legacy – you passed with flying colors from the kids.

Now, the adults have a bit more to say.

Of the two meal options, my wife and I both agreed that the Stroganoff was the better-tasting.

The Pasta Alfredo was a little on the bland side for my tastes, and I used a fair amount of salt and pepper to give it some flavor.

The Stroganoff had more flavor than the Alfredo, and we both enjoyed it and even went back for seconds.

So while it wasn’t the best meal I’ve ever had, what’s important is it satisfied my family.

Everyone ate, got plenty of calories, and for survival food, that’s what matters.

Oh, and after dinner, Loui, our chocolate lab, didn’t hesitate to clean plates either, so he was also won over.

The next review point may be the most important of them all – price.

Note: Comparing prices is not as straightforward as you might think. Some company’s like to focus on cost per serving, while others cost per lb.

There are occasionally seasonal sales, bulk discounts, etc.

It’s challenging, if not impossible, to determine the “absolute best price.”
