Note: These are the only 2 I recommend. Everything else has too many compromises to be considered a top option.

Key Features to Look for in a Manual Firewood Splitter

A good manual firewood splitter should be strong, stable, and safe. Here’s what you should consider before buying:

???? Splitting Mechanism – Hydraulic pump? Slide hammer? Wedge-and-mallet design? Pick one based on your strength and log size needs.

???? Max Log Size – Some splitters handle only small logs for kindling, while others can split thicker, tougher pieces of firewood.

???? Portability – If you need something lightweight for camping or off-grid use, avoid bulky hydraulic models.

???? Durability – Cast iron and hardened steel blades last longer than cheap aluminum or plastic parts.

???? Ease of Use – If your goal is less effort, go for hydraulic splitters or wedge-based designs that don’t require brute force.

How to Use a Manual Firewood Splitter (Without Wrecking Yourself)

Using a manual firewood splitter the right way will keep you safe and make the job much easier. Here’s the step-by-step process:

1. Prep Your Work Area

✔️ Set up on solid, level ground (concrete or packed dirt works best)
✔️ Wear safety gear – gloves, boots, and eye protection (flying wood chips are no joke)
✔️ Stack logs nearby so you don’t have to stop and reload every few minutes

2. Position the Log

✔️ Place the log upright and centered on the splitter
✔️ If using a wedge-style splitter, align it straight over the grain for a clean break

3. Apply Force

✔️ For hydraulic splitters – Pump the handle until the log splits
✔️ For slide hammer splitters – Lift the hammer and slam it down onto the wedge
✔️ For wedge-style splitters – Strike the log with a heavy mallet until it cracks

4. Remove & Repeat

✔️ Clear the split logs away before placing another one
✔️ If a log doesn’t split completely, rotate it and try again

Pro Tip: Don’t rush. Splitting firewood is about technique, not just strength.

Let the tool do the work!

Who Should Get a Manual Firewood Splitter?

A manual firewood splitter isn’t for everyone—but it might be perfect for you if:

You want a safer alternative to an axe – If you’re tired of swinging a maul (or just worried about missing your target), a splitter gives you more control and less risk.

You don’t want to deal with gas-powered machines – Hydraulic and electric splitters are great, but they require maintenance, fuel, or electricity. Manual splitters work anywhere.

You need something portable – If you’re heading to a cabin or off-grid property, a small manual wood splitter is easier to transport than a heavy-duty hydraulic model.

You want to save money – Manual splitters cost a fraction of electric or gas-powered splitters. If you’re only splitting firewood for personal use, a $100–$300 splitter will get the job done without breaking the bank.

❌ However…If you need to split massive logs all winter long, you might want to invest in a powered splitter instead. Manual splitters are fantastic for smaller jobs, but they’ll wear you out if you need to process cords of wood regularly.

Final Thoughts: Should You Get a Manual Firewood Splitter?

So if you love the idea of splitting firewood without gas, electricity, or unnecessary effort, a manual firewood splitter is a smart buy. It’s safer than an axe, cheaper than a power splitter. And far more efficient than splitting logs the old-fashioned way.

???? For small logs and kindling? Go for a wedge-based splitter like the Kindling Cracker.
???? For medium-sized logs? A slide hammer splitter gives you controlled power.
???? For big logs? A hydraulic manual splitter is your best bet.

At the end of the day, the right tool makes all the difference. If you want faster, easier, and safer firewood splitting, a manual wood splitter belongs in your shed.

Now, go forth and split wood like a pro. ????????

Many Muslims Believe That Donald Trump Is The Islamic Version Of The Antichrist (“The Dajjal”) And Will Be Defeated When “The Mahdi” Arrives

For large numbers of Muslims all over the world, the fact that Donald Trump is leading an attack on Iran is evidence that the Islamic apocalypse is upon us. I realize that this may sound crazy to many of you, but this is what they actually believe. In Islamic theology, there is a shadowy figure known as “the Dajjal” that rises during the end times. According to Wikipedia, “the Dajjal” roughly corresponds to the figure of the Antichrist in the Christian faith…

Al-Masih ad-Dajjal (Arabic: الْمَسِيحُ الدَّجَّالُ, romanizedAl-Masih ad-Dajjal, lit.the deceitful Messiah),[1] otherwise referred to simply as the Dajjal, is an antagonistic figure in Islamic apocalyptism who will pretend to be the promised Messiah and later claim to be God, appearing before the Day of Judgment according to the Islamic eschatological narrative.[1][2]The Dajjal is not mentioned in the Quran, but he is mentioned and described in the Hadith.[1]Corresponding to the Antichrist in Christianity, the Dajjal is said to emerge out in the East, although the specific location varies among the various sources.[3]

There is nobody in the world that Shiite Muslims hate more than Donald Trump.

And so it shouldn’t be any surprise that many of them have started to believe that Trump is “the Dajjal”

But a Fox News Digital investigation reveals that, for certain hardline Shiite ideologues, including in the U.S., this is not an ending but a prophetic showdown that will usher in the arrival of the “Mahdi,” a messiah, according to Islamic eschatology, or the theology of end times.

In this prophecy, Mahdi will emerge to battle Dajjal, the Islamic equivalent of the Antichrist, in a final battle of Armageddon. For many of these ideologues, President Donald Trump is Dajjal.

Yes, a lot of them really do believe this.

And this is not a recent phenomenon.

More than a year ago, a senior cleric in Iran preached a sermon in which he boldly declared that “the Dajjal” is Trump…

A senior cleric appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader suggested in a sermon on Friday that US president Donald Trump was the one-eyed Islamic equivalent of the Antichrist prophesied to menace humanity around judgment day.

“He is completely one-eyed, and this is a sign of the end times,” Seyyed Hassan Ameli told congregants in a sermon for Islamic Friday prayers according to the Tehran-based Didban News website.

Now that war has erupted, Muslims all over the world are having debates about whether Trump is “the Dajjal” or not.

This is particularly true in Shiite communities.

To many Shiites, the rise of the Dajjal is a sign that the Mahdi is about to reappear

In the Twelver denomination of Shīʿa Islam, one of the signs of the reappearance of the Mahdi whom Twelvers consider to be their 12th Imam from the Ahl al-Bayt (“People of the Household”), is the advent of the Dajjal.[39]

“Whoever denies al-Mahdi has denied God, and whoever accepts al-Dajjal has denied God (turned an infidel).” This Shīʿīte ḥadīth attributed to Muhammad strongly emphasizes the return of Dajjal and the event of the reappearance of the Mahdi.[40]

This is why many of those that are currently running Iran do not fear this war.

They have actually been looking forward to exactly this sort of a scenario.  Once the Dajjal rises, the Mahdi is supposed to return during a time of great chaos and war

Before his reappearance (Arabic: ظهور, romanizedṭuhūr), the world will plunge into chaos, where immorality and ignorance will be commonplace, the Qur’an will be forgotten, and religion will be abandoned.[58] There will be plagues, earthquakes, floods, wars and death.[63]

Of course it isn’t just Shiite Muslims in Iran that believe this nonsense.

Fox News actually discovered that this ideology is being preached at a Shiite mosque in northern Virginia

At a recent Friday sermon at a local Shiite mosque in northern Virginia, an imam closed prayer with an earnest plea, before war broke out in Iran: “May Allah destroy all the nonbelievers – or kafiroon or munafiqoon,” he said, using Arabic words that refer to “nonbelievers” and “hypocrites.”

He asked for this victory “before the arrival of Imam Mahdi.”

Fox News Digital observed the sermon and also witnessed a special table of honor in the middle of the mosque’s main prayer hall, featuring framed photos of Khamenei embracing Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrullah, also killed by Israel for orchestrating terrorist attacks.

Even though the United States and Israel clearly have the upper hand in this war so far, many Shiites fully expect the tide to turn once the Mahdi shows up.

Apparently the Mahdi’s army is supposed to travel from Iran to Syria where the Mahdi will join forces with Jesus.  Then the Mahdi is supposed to kill the Dajjal in the land of Israel

In the majority Sunni sect and the minority Shiite sect of Islam, clerics describe the Mahdi’s army traveling from modern-day Iran to Damascus, Syria, where Jesus would appear at the Umayyad Mosque and pray behind the Mahdi. The Mahdi’s forces would battle Dajjal in Syria and kill him in Lod, Israel, conquering the world.

Days ago, Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency repeated the end-times narrative, quoting Hezbollah Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem, claiming the regime is the “government of Imam Mahdi” and its anti-U.S. “resistance is the path to hastening his reappearance.”

I know that this sounds like a bunch of nonsense, but many Shiites take this stuff very, very seriously.

And a lot of them are entirely convinced that now is the time for these things to happen.

So they aren’t going to just lay down their arms and give up, because they are expecting the Mahdi to show up on a white horse at any moment.

Of course all of the chaos that we are witnessing is happening at a time when there have been all sorts of strange signs in the heavens.

On Tuesday, a blood moon eclipse will appear over parts of North America, Australia and New Zealand…

North America, Australia and New Zealand will be treated to a rare total lunar eclipse on Tuesday known as a “blood moon”.

As the full moon dips into the planet’s shadow it will change colour to a “deep and coppery red”, says astrophysicist Dr Rebecca Allen of Swinburne University.

It will be the last time people will get to see this celestial phenomenon for nearly three years.

All throughout human history, blood moon eclipses have been considered to be very ominous signs.

A lot of people will be looking up into the sky and wondering what this could mean.

We were warned that war with Iran was coming, and now it is here.

I believe that a lot more death and destruction is coming.

The Shiite leaders of Iran will fight like mad because they believe that the Mahdi will soon come riding to their rescue.

Of course that isn’t going to happen, and millions of Shiite Muslims will be deeply disillusioned once all of this is finally over.

Red Dot Sights — 6 Things To Consider

For handguns, red dots sights are one of the most sought-after optics an individual can use to modify their firearm. These sights are known to improve accuracy, allow faster target acquisitions, and enable quicker follow up shots. While red dots provide several key benefits, it is crucial to recognize that these attachments do have some drawbacks worth mentioning. To help you make an informed decision if red dots are the right optic for you, here is everything you need to consider before purchasing.

What You Need To Know About Red Dot Sights

Battery Powered

Many red dot sights operate using batteries, typically lasting 20,000 to 50,000+ hours. This lifespan depends heavily on brightness settings, motion-sensing auto-off features, and even the quality of the battery itself. While reflex optics are designed to be reliable, failures can occur, making regular maintenance essential. To ensure everything operates efficiently, many shooters choose to replace batteries every 6 to 12 months.

Fragile

Red dot sights are made with curved glass lenses that feature a spectral-selective mirror or beam-splitter coating that reflects a red LED light. While reflex optics are made to be durable and are often drop tested by manufacturers and third-party reviews, glass can shatter or crack under direct impact. To prevent damaging an optic, it is recommended to mount it properly, regularlycheck and tighten screws using a torque wench, and use rubber or hard plastics covers over the lens.

Weight

Depending on optic and mounting type, many red dot sights can weigh under two ounces to around five ounces. While this bulk may seem insignificant, it can affect shooting performance. On lighter handguns, the increased mass can slow slide movement, especially when using lower powered ammunition. Added weight can also impact a firearm’s balance, making regular training necessary to familiarize yourself with your tool.

Concealment & Holster Limitation

While it is no secret that red dots look great on handguns, one drawback worth mentioning is the added height and bulk can create concealment challenges. Due to the increased height, the outline of your firearm can easily become visible, potentially resulting in unwanted attention or legal consequences. This means that choosing an appropriate carry position is essential. Strong side carry or appendix inside-the-waistband are two comfortable and effective carry positions that can help successfully conceal a handgun.

A handgun modified with red dot sight also requires the right holster type. Standard holsters sight channel is typically designed to be low profile, making an optical-ready holster necessary. These holsters are designed with a cutout or groove that allows the optic to sit flush or protrude slightly, allowing for a smooth and snag-free draw.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a vision condition that occurs when the cornea is unevenly curved, causing distorted sight at all distances. As a result, reflex sights can appear blurry or smeared rather than a crisp LED dot. However, individuals with mild astigmatism may find they can use red dots without issue, especially when adjusting brightness or wearing prescription shooting glasses. If a red dot sight is not appropriate for you, holographic sights or optics with green dots are also effective options worth considering.

Visibility

One drawback worth mentioning is reflex optics can become difficult to use in bright, sunny conditions, often appearing dim. To correct this issue, it is essential to adjust the brightness settings properly. In low-light environments or indoors, a lower setting is recommended while in bright conditions, a higher setting can help prevent the dot from becoming fuzzy. It is also important to understand that red dots can blend in with red or brown environments, which can make achieving a clear sight picture more challenging.

Wrapping It Up

Compared to iron sights, red dot optics are more susceptible to damage and can add weight to a firearm. These optics are known to improve accuracy, though they can cause concealment and holster limitations, requiring specific carry positions and the use of optic-ready gear. Red dot sights may also create visibility challenges for individuals with astigmatism or in certain environments, especially if brightness settings are not properly adjusted. However, despite these disadvantages, many people value red dot optics for their performance and appearance, making them an effective and practical option for modifying a handgun.

Is This How We End Up In A War With Cuba?

It certainly didn’t take much for people to start clamoring for regime change in Cuba. A tragic incident that just occurred about a mile north of Cuba has made a lot of Americans very angry. Many are suggesting that it is time for President Trump to send in the military, but our military is already spread very thin due to the situation in the Middle East. A major war with Iran could literally erupt at any time, and once it starts it will take priority. But tensions with Cuba have been rising for months, and now the Cubans have killed four people that were riding in a speedboat that was registered in Florida…

The Cuban military has opened fire on an American vessel, killing four people and injuring six, sparking concern Donald Trump could attack the island.

Cuba Interior Ministry (MININT) said today (February 25) a US speedboat with Florida registration number FL7726SH, was detected within one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino Channel, in Cayo Falcones, Corralillo Municipality, in Villa Clara.

I am already seeing so many demands for vengeance.

But it is so important to know all the facts before passing judgment.

According to the Cubans, the crew of the speedboat opened fire first

Crewmembers opened fire on Cuban Ministry of the Interior forces as they approached the American vessel, the Cuban Embassy said in a statement. Aboard the Florida-registered vessel, four were killed and six were injured; the commander of the Ministry of the Interior vessel was wounded, Cuba said.

“In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar of the Cuban State in safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region,” Cuban authorities said. “Investigations by the competent authorities continue in order to fully clarify the events.”

If the Cubans are telling us the truth, that puts an entirely different spin on things.

Needless to say, if Cuban personnel were being fired upon in Cuban waters, they had every right to fire back.

Apparently this confrontation took place approximately one mile north of Cuba

The Cuban Embassy said on X that the incident unfolded Wednesday morning, when the speedboat approached one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel in the Villa Clara province.

The embassy said Border Guard Troops confronted the speedboat, leading the crew of the Florida-registered boat to open fire on the Cuban personnel.

The commander of the Cuban vessel was injured in the shootout, while four people on the Florida speedboat were killed and six more were injured.

So why was a speedboat that was registered in Florida so close to Cuba?

Well, the New York Times is reporting that a U.S. official has admitted that the speedboat was part of a “flotilla to get relatives out of Cuba”

A U.S. official said the firefight involved a U.S. civilian boat that was part of flotilla to get relatives out of Cuba, adding that the vessel was not U.S. Naval or Coast Guard boat, the New York Times reported.

Getting family members out of Cuba is a noble goal.

If I had family members in Cuba, I would want to get them out too.

But it is an incredibly risky operation.

If you get caught, you could end up in a dirty Cuban prison for a very long time.

Desperation to avoid capture is probably what led the crew of the speedboat to start shooting, and it was inevitable that Cuban authorities would return fire.

Now we have a major international incident on our hands, and a lot of people out there are very upset.

For example, Florida Representative Carlos Gimenez has angrily declared that the regime in Cuba “must be relegated to the dust bin of history”

It is quite clear what he would like to see happen.

In response to his post, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier pledged to do everything in his power “to hold these communists accountable”

I can certainly understand why people don’t like the communist regime in Cuba.

It is horrible.

But we can’t go to war with other nations just because we don’t like them.

Of course this latest incident has occurred at a time when tensions with Cuba are already extremely high.

On January 11th, President Trump warned Cuba that it would be totally cut off from oil if it did not make a deal…

On Jan. 11, Trump told Cuba they needed to make a deal in a post on his social media site, Truth Social.

“THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO! I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE,” Trump said, although he did not elaborate at the time on what that deal might be.

Subsequently, the Trump administration intercepted a number of oil tankers that were heading for Cuba…

Venezuela and Cuba have been close allies for decades, with Venezuela being the main exporter of crude oil and fuel to the island.

For weeks, the US has been intercepting and seizing oil tankers headed for Cuba, though the Trump administration has not acknowledged it is instituting a blockade.

Last week, the US Coast Guard seized a tanker 70 miles away from the island that was full of Colombian oil, The New York Times reported.

As a result of a lack of oil, conditions are really bad in Cuba at this moment.

After pressure from other leaders in the region, President Trump finally decided to allow shipments of oil to Cuba for “commercial and humanitarian use”

Faced with an outcry from Caribbean leaders, worried that starving Cuba of oil would cause the economy to quickly collapse, Washington said it would allow shipments of Venezuelan oil for “commercial and humanitarian use,” AFP also added.

But now this has happened.

I have a feeling that at least some of the dead are U.S. citizens.

Is this how we end up in a war with Cuba?

I don’t know.

Right now the anti-Cuba crowd has been stirred into a frenzy.

And it certainly isn’t a secret that the Trump administration would like to see regime change.

For now, I think that the looming conflict with Iran will take priority, but I don’t think that this crisis with Cuba is going to go away any time soon.

The Mylar Myth: Why Cold Weather Mylar Bags Fail

 cold-weather-mylar-bags

Article at a glance: Cold weather Mylar bags (also known as bivvy or bivy bags) are ultralight emergency shelters made from heat-reflective polyester film designed to retain radiant body heat. While they reflect radiant emissions, they frequently fail as a sub-zero emergency sleeping system because they lack conductive insulation and trap internal moisture. Addressing these failures requires transitioning from non-porous Mylar to more efficient alternatives that can manage the critical moisture-retention gap.

Are “Cold Weather Mylar Bags” a Survival Myth?

A Mylar emergency bag is a specialized heat-reflective shelter designed to prevent hypothermia by bouncing radiant heat back to your body. However, marketing tags labeled “Cold Weather Rated” are often misleading in sub-zero environments. Without a comprehensive system, these bags lead to moisture entrapment and rapid conductive heat loss.

Go to Amazon or any survival site, and you’ll see the “Cold Weather Rated” tag slapped on $15 silver bivvies. Based on years of field-testing in high-alpine and urban collapse scenarios, I can tell you that this marketing is dangerous. Relying on these as a standalone sleeping system in sub-zero temperatures isn’t preparedness; it’s a gamble that can lead to serious injury or death.

Why does conduction cause Mylar bag conduction failure?

cold-weather-mylar-bags

Heat reflection is only one-third of the survival equation. If you lie on 20°F frozen earth, you lose heat through conduction faster than the Mylar can reflect it. Without a physical insulator, the material compresses to paper-thinness and transforms into a thermal bridge rather than a barrier.

While Mylar does reflect 90% of your radiant heat, it’s biologically useless if you don’t account for the ground beneath you. Without a pad or debris, the Mylar becomes a shiny wrapper for a frozen body. To stop conductive heat loss, you must establish a dead air space between your body and the soil.

What is the 4-inch rule winter survival protocol?

The 4-inch rule is the mandatory survival standard for creating a conductive barrier in the field. It dictates that you must place at least four inches of compacted, dry debris, such as pine boughs, leaves, or dry grass, between your Mylar bag and the ground. This creates the dead air space that Mylar lacks, effectively stopping the earth from siphoning your core temperature.

If you’re moving and missing a foam sleeping pad, this rule is your only defense against the frozen earth. Mylar has zero loft so it won’t protect you from the ground. The 4-inch debris mattress provides the R-value required to make the reflective properties of the bag actually work.

How do you prevent emergency bivy condensation?

Standard Mylar is a non-porous vapor barrier that creates a dangerous condensation trap known as the “Trash Bag Effect.” Your body’s moisture soaks your clothing and base layers. In sub-zero temperatures, this moisture freezes the moment you exit the bag, turning your essential layers into solid blocks of ice.

The solution requires maintaining a “Face-Out” vent or utilizing breathable materials like metalized olefins. Managing internal humidity is a non-negotiable requirement for preventing a flash-freeze of your base layers.

Standard Mylar vs. Breathable Metalized Olefin

To solve the moisture trap, survival technology has evolved from non-porous polyester to breathable metalized olefins. These fabrics allow gas-state moisture to vent through microscopic pores while still reflecting radiant heat. This transition is vital for anyone moving from emergency survival to sustained cold-weather endurance.

When choosing gear, you’re not just looking for “shiny.” You’re looking for a material that manages the delta between your body heat and the external environment. Non-breathable foil is a temporary fix, while breathable membranes are a sustainable system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you sleep in cold weather Mylar bags during winter? Only if used as a component in a larger system. Without a ground pad or the 4-inch rule and moisture management, you risk flash-freezing from your own sweat and conductive heat loss to the frozen earth.

How much warmth does a sub-zero emergency sleeping system add? A standard Mylar blanket adds approximately 8-10°F of radiant heat reflection but offers 0°F of conductive insulation. It’s got to be paired with at least 4 inches of lofted debris to be effective on frozen ground.

Why is the 4-inch rule vital for winter survival? Mylar is a radiant barrier, not an insulator. Because it’s paper-thin, it does not protect against conduction. Four inches of debris is the minimum depth required to create an air gap that stops the ground from absorbing your body heat, particularly in Mylar systems where no other insulation exists.
