How prepared are you on the road during this holiday season? Make sure you have car emergency kit essentials in tow so you’re always well-prepared wherever you go!
We spend a lot of time in our car especially during the holiday season. Traveling to see friends and family during the winter months can be a lot of fun, but dangerous if you are not prepared.
Preparation is something we all know about considering our year of shutdowns, coronavirus, and shortages. Being ready for anything should be a top concern when traveling with your family this holiday season. Having a car emergency kit for this is even more important than in the past. Having these important items in your emergency kit could potentially save your life during your travels.
So how can you outfit your vehicle to be prepared for the winter chaos, calamity, or disaster on the road? Let’s look at a number of preps that add up to create a car emergency kit to keep your family safe while traveling this holiday season.

It’s not hard to understand why you need a first aid kit on the road this winter season. Everything you need a first aid kit at home for, you need one in the car for the same reason.
I have had terrible experiences with store-bought first aid kits. Now, I simply build my own kits. I use some of the components from store-bought kits but making our own is simply better.
My car first aid kit contains the following:
One of the most important things I carry in my vehicle is a get home bag. This bag is filled with everything I will need to get from wherever I am to my home base.
There are tools, knives, clothes, and all things survival in my get home bag. I also keep snacks, drinks, and another first aid kit inside. This is an essential piece of car kit preparedness.
We have other great articles on building get home bags here at Survival Life.
You can build seasonal weather preps in a Rubbermaid kit. The most important season to do this in is winter, so this step is crucial. Your kit should contain things like:
Basically, your seasonal weather preps are designed to help your body maintain its core temperature and to get you rescued. This is highly recommended during winter holiday travel.
The technology for jumpstarting vehicles has really improved.
Having an accessible jump starter could be the difference between being stranded and finding a way to safety. You don’t need to have jumper cables in your car if you invest in a high-quality jumper for your car. One of these can act as a phone charger and a portable power source for a number of things. They are well worth the investment.
You can get a dirt-cheap tire inflation system that will allow you to fill your tires when they are either leaky or just need to be topped off.Keep that with a bottle of fix-a-flat and you have everything you need to deal with tire inflation issues that don’t require a spare.

Electrical fires can be a serious problem in your vehicle. Not only could your car catch fire and be ruined, but you might have a family member trapped inside a burning car. Your car fire extinguisher will make quick work of most electrical fires. These are small and affordable.
Look for a 2lb, 100psi dry chemical extinguisher.
Flares, reflectors, bungee cords, and the like can all be purchased in a simple road safety kit. Now, this kit should not be your only car survival kit, but save yourself the time and just buy a basic road safety kit to add to your overall kit.

During the winter holiday season, you will be behind the wheel with the people you care about the most and if a disaster strikes you might find that your trunk offers you a whole lot of nothing. This puts you and your family in a bad position, and no prepper wants to find themselves unprepared for something like this.
You can make an investment in your vehicular readiness over time. You don’t have to go out and spend tons of money on all of this stuff right away. All of the preparedness happens in small bites.
Most of the items we talked about in this article are affordable. You might even be able to repurpose extra items like Rubbermaid containers and winter car kits from items already in your home.
Do you have other car emergency kit essentials to add to this list? Let us know in the comments section!
Last Updated on November 23, 2020 It’s rare that we see raw land healthy and ready to plant…
International travel will soon look far different than it once did. Now that multiple vaccines for COVID-19 have been rushed through the development process, it is just a matter of time before they start being widely distributed. In fact, we are being told that the rollout for COVID-19 vaccines here in the United States will likely begin some time in the middle of December. There will be millions of people that will be quite eager to rush out and get injected, but of course there will be millions of others that never intend to get vaccinated under any circumstances. Unfortunately, those that choose not to get vaccinated could soon find themselves being unable to travel internationally.
For months, there has been speculation about the possibility of some sort of “COVID passport” for international travel, but now it is being reported that such a thing is actually “in the final development phase”…
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said Monday it’s “in the final development phase” of a mobile “digital passport” app that would tell airlines if international travelers had been vaccinated against COVID-19. The app would help “get people traveling again safely,” IATA’s Nick Careen said in a statement, by “giving governments confidence that systematic COVID-19 testing can work as a replacement for quarantine requirements.”
Needless to say, the International Air Transport Association will be strongly urging all carriers to use this new “digital passport” in the months ahead.
But will the airlines go along?
In Australia, Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce has already made it quite clear that he expects international travelers to prove that they have been vaccinated…
“We are looking at changing our terms and conditions to say for international travelers, that we will ask people to have the vaccination before they get on the aircraft,” Joyce told Australia’s Network Nine television.
And Korean Air is taking a similar stance…
Jill Chung, a spokesperson for Korean Air, said Tuesday there’s a real possibility that airlines will require that passengers be vaccinated. She said that’s because governments are likely to require vaccinations as a condition for lifting quarantine requirements for new arrivals.
Here in the United States, the major airlines are not committing one way or the other just yet…
When asked if American Airlines would implement such a policy, a company spokesperson said that while the airline is pleased that vaccine development is moving forward, it’s too early to comment on policies related to a COVID-19 vaccine. A spokesperson from Delta couldn’t share specifics either, and noted that the entire pandemic has been unpredictable.
A spokesperson for Southwest said that the airline “will continue monitoring public health information from the CDC, the latest scientific research, and insights from our internal and external experts to guide our operational policies as we work to support the well-being of our customers and employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.” Jet Blue and United did not respond to a request for comment.
But if the federal government ultimately decides to order the airlines to go along with this new program, you know that they will fall in line.
And once “COVID passports” are in place for international travel, how long will it be before they start being required for domestic travel?
Prior to the pandemic, talking about such a thing would have been unimaginable, but at this point we are seeing unimaginable measures being instituted all over the world.
For example, we just learned that police will be going door to door in Belgium to enforce COVID restrictions even during the holidays…
Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden has warned her fellow countrymen that police will knock on doors at Christmas if needed to enforce Wuhan coronavirus measures.
The Interior Minister stated that law enforcement would make sure to enforce the strict Wuhan coronavirus lockdown measures even on Christmas Day, saying that “If necessary, if there is a lot of noise, for example, the police will knock on doors.”
On our side of the Atlantic, things are becoming increasingly draconian as well.
Out in Oregon, Governor Kate Brown is actually encouraging residents to spy on their neighbors and to report any infractions to law enforcement authorities…
“Look, this is no different than what happens if there’s a party down the street and it’s keeping everyone awake,” Brown told KGW8 last week. “What do neighbors do? They call law enforcement because it’s too noisy. This is just like that. It’s like a violation of a noise ordinance.”
“Honestly, they shouldn’t have to. This is about saving lives and it’s about protecting our fellow Oregonians.”
To me, that sounds like the sort of thing they used to do in East Germany at the height of the Cold War.
In New York City, they have decided to set up “vehicle checkpoints” at important bridges and crossings in order to enforce the new restrictions which were just put in place…
New York City will have vehicle checkpoints at key bridges and crossings, and will strictly enforce the travel quarantine, Sheriff Joseph Fucito said.
The sheriff’s office will conduct spot checks when out-of-state buses drop riders off at the curb. Test and tracing teams will be on the ground to direct individuals to testing sites and provide education on quarantine, Fucito said.
If things are this bad already, can you imagine what they will do if this pandemic gets a lot worse or if an even more dangerous pandemic eventually comes along?
The good news is that there has been a lot of resistance to absurd restrictions here in the United States, and that is going to make it difficult for the politicians to push things too far.
And surveys have shown that approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population is against mandatory vaccinations, and other surveys have shown that only a minority of all Americans plan to get a COVID vaccine right away.
With so few Americans getting vaccinated, that is going to make it really hard for the airlines to make it a requirement for their passengers.
Also, it is going to take more than one trip to the doctor to be fully “vaccinated”, and those trips won’t be pleasant. This week, one prominent member of the AMA even admitted that some people may not want to come back for a second shot because “they are probably not going to feel wonderful” after the first shot…
Dr. Sandra Fryhofer of the American Medical Association said both Pfizer’s and Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccines require two doses at varying intervals. As a practicing physician, she said she worries whether her patients will come back for a second dose because of the potentially unpleasant side effects they may experience after the first shot.
“We really need to make patients aware that this is not going to be a walk in the park,” Fryhofer said during a virtual meeting with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, an outside group of medical experts that advise the CDC. She is also a liaison to the committee. “They are going to know they had a vaccine. They are probably not going to feel wonderful. But they’ve got to come back for that second dose.”
In addition, in previous articles I have discussed the fact that COVID antibodies fade very rapidly, and so to have any sort of lasting immunity people would need to go back to the doctor every few months for more shots.
On top of everything else, if a new strain of COVID that does not respond to the vaccines becomes dominant, the shots that people get may not even do them any good in the long run.
A lot of the “experts” out there are anticipating that these vaccines will allow our lives to “return to normal” soon, but I don’t think that is going to happen.
Instead, I am expecting even more draconian measures to be instituted all over the globe in 2021, and that is extremely unfortunate.

How many aluminum foil survival uses do you know? Keep reading to find out the various uses of this unsung hero for emergency preparedness!
In a crisis, you make the most out of everything you have, which means you might need to get a little creative. Things like paracord and duct tape have fairly obvious uses, but other items may require a little more critical thinking. Let’s take a look at one of the most common items you have in your kitchen — aluminum foil.
Aluminum foil can be used for so much more than preparing and serving food, it can be an indispensable survival tool that should always be included in your survival kit. You see, it’s more than just a food wrapper. There’s actually plenty of survival uses for aluminum foil that will come in handy when you need it most.

In any survival situation, it is important to stay hydrated. However, water acquired from any “untrusted” source needs to be made safe for consumption. Aluminum foil can be a substitute for pots and pans by creating a makeshift bowl. Bring your water to a rolling boil for a minimum of one minute. This will make your water safe to drink.

Since aluminum foil is reflective, it is great for signaling purposes. Place along with branches or any other areas where it will be clearly visible from the air or a road close by. You can also use aluminum foil to make a makeshift mirror, which is great for signaling for help, as well.

Fish love shiny lures. If you do not have bait, wrap aluminum foil around the weights as it will act as an effective flasher attracting fish that are more reluctant to bite. When the fishing gets a little bit tough, all you need is a square tin foil to improve the catch.

Pine sap and aluminum foil will act as a temporary patching solution for cracks in water bottles or small piercings in hydration packs. It will not hold up to a lot of water pressure, but it will help with drips and small seeps temporarily.

I keep a multi-tool on me at all times. The scissors are my most used tool, so they can be dull from time to time. To sharpen scissors using aluminum foil, fold the foil over two or three times and cut the foil with your scissors. This will help sharpen the scissor blades.

If batteries become loose, the most common reason is the springs inside the battery compartment have lost some of their tension over time. Loose batteries can cause glitching. To remedy this problem with aluminum foil, fold a small piece just big enough to fill in the gap, and you’re good to go.

Wrapping your matches with aluminum foil will keep them dry as long as you don’t go underwater! Waterproof matches and lighters are available in the market, but you don’t have these readily available most of the time. Aluminum foil is a great alternative since you can simply tear a piece of it from your kitchen drawer.

Do you have dirty pots and pans but forgot to pack the scrub pads? Not to worry. Crumble up a piece of aluminum foil and scrub your dirty pots and pans and rinse.
Remember, it is important to keep the smell of food away from your shelter area or a campsite. Having clean pots and pans will help prevent predators (such as bears) from snooping around at night.

Building a wall out of aluminum foil around your campfire will help protect it from the wind. This will also help reflect heat to help you stay warm at night. Campsites in the uplands can be very cold at night so the more warmth you can generate, the better.
Bonus: If you’re cold at night wrap up in heavy duty aluminum foil, it can act as a space blanket and help insulate you.
Space Blanket Definition: Also known as an emergency or thermal blanket, it is a thin plastic sheet that reflects heat, helping the user stay warm.

Remember the makeshift bowl you made to boil water? Make about 3 or 4 times that size (or just make several of them) to collect rainwater. A tarp is also good for collecting rainwater, but it’s quite heavy to bring when camping. Aluminum foil is a more useful material for light travel.

Crumple up a piece of aluminum foil like you would a piece of paper. Use the crumpled foil to remove rust from metal objects. It’s not going to be a magical thing wherein the rust comes off with a little rubbing. You have to be a little bit patient to make it work.

Here’s a quick tip about aluminum foil survival kits from CommonSenseOutdoors:
It’s amazing how such a simple thing can be so useful for wilderness survival. My whole life, I couldn’t even remember anyone asking me for an aluminum foil if not to wrap food, now it’s one of your many significant survival tools for any outdoor emergency. Kudos to the brilliant minds who gave birth to these ideas. It may be an unusual prepper gear, but it can also be utilized as mylar blankets or an emergency blanket, an alcohol stove, and a whole lot more. Nevertheless, creativity is the key to survival and learning any new skill will always be a plus for preppers!

What if all of the assumptions that people are making about this COVID pandemic are completely wrong? When Pfizer announced that they had developed a successful vaccine for COVID, the world cheered. And then when Moderna announced that they had developed a successful vaccine for COVID, the world cheered even more. But COVID has been mutating, and scientists assure us that it will keep mutating. So what happens if the vaccines that are being developed end up being completely useless against new mutant strains of the virus? Would that put us all the way back to square one (or even worse)?
To put this problem into perspective, let’s talk about the flu for a moment. Every year, health authorities come up with a flu vaccine that they think will be effective against the variation or variations of the flu that they believe will be dominant in that particular year. Most people simply assume that a “flu shot” will provide them with complete protection against “the flu”, but that is actually not true at all. In some years the match between the flu vaccine and the variations of the flu that are running around is pretty good, and some years that is definitely not the case. The following comes from the official CDC website…
During years when the flu vaccine is not well matched to circulating influenza viruses, it is possible that little or no benefit from flu vaccination may be observed. During years when there is a good match between the flu vaccine and circulating viruses, it is possible to measure substantial benefits from flu vaccination in terms of preventing flu illness and complications. However, even during years when the flu vaccine match is good, the benefits of flu vaccination will vary, depending on various factors like the characteristics of the person being vaccinated, what influenza viruses are circulating that season and even, potentially, which type of flu vaccine was used.
At this point, Pfizer and Moderna both seem convinced that their vaccines will be effective against the dominant strain of COVID that is currently sweeping across the globe.
But what if a new strain becomes dominant?
In Denmark, a new strain of COVID that is being passed to humans from minks was considered to be so dangerous that the government actually announced that they would kill all 17 million minks in the entire nation…
The government of Denmark shocked the world a few days ago when it announced it would slaughter as many as 17 million minks in the country, effectively destroying the entire mink fur industry in the country. The officials opted for this radical option because of the novel coronavirus, as the pathogen developed a potentially dangerous mutation inside the captive mink population. Reports from the country said that the mutated coronavirus has already infected at least 12 people. Researchers are worried that the new strain might be so dangerous that it could effectively render the current COVID-19 vaccine candidates useless. A new report now delivers more troublesome news, as some researchers think that the mutated coronavirus strain has pandemic potential. Others, meanwhile, are calling for calm.
Thankfully, after a tremendous uproar the Danish government decided not to kill all the minks.
But this strain is still spreading, and as the quote above noted, this new strain “could effectively render the current COVID-19 vaccine candidates useless”.
In other words, if this Denmark strain becomes dominant it may force the vaccine companies to go back to the drawing board.
Meanwhile, we just learned that “a fast-spreading new strain of COVID-19” has popped up in Australia…
South Australia is battling a fast-spreading new strain of COVID-19 as it prepares for a six-day lockdown to attempt to contain the virus.
A COVID-19 cluster in Adelaide’s north grew to 22 on Wednesday as thousands of people continued to flock to testing stations.
The reason why authorities decided to lock down all of South Australia for six days is because this new strain appears to be far more contagious than previous strains…
A strain of Covid-19 behind an outbreak in South Australia may be spreading up to five times quicker than normal, officials fear.
Concerned health bosses say the incubation period — how long it takes for someone to show symptoms after getting infected — was ‘very very short’.
Professor Nicola Spurrier, chief health officer for South Australia, claimed people are becoming contagious within 24 hours of catching the virus. She said the particular strain behind the outbreak had ‘certain characteristics’.
If it is true that this new strain spreads five times more rapidly than older strains, it could easily become dominant.
And if that happens, the vaccines that have been developed may not be of any use at all.
We just don’t know at this point.
But what we do know is that COVID will continue to mutate in the months and years ahead, and that could potentially create massive headaches for vaccine developers.
As for the vaccines that have already been created, some experts are pointing out that there is so much that is unknown about them.
Most people assume that these new vaccines are similar to other vaccines that they have previously taken, but that is definitely not true.
These new vaccines are in an entirely new class all by themselves. They are known as “messenger RNA” (mRNA) vaccines, and they work by hijacking the protein-making machinery in your cells…
When Moderna was just finishing its Phase I trial, The Independent wrote about the vaccine and described it this way: “It uses a sequence of genetic RNA material produced in a lab that, when injected into your body, must invade your cells and hijack your cells’ protein-making machinery called ribosomes to produce the viral components that subsequently train your immune system to fight the virus.”
“In this case, Moderna’s mRNA-1273 is programmed to make your cells produce the coronavirus’ infamous coronavirus spike protein that gives the virus its crown-like appearance (corona is crown in Latin) for which it is named,” wrote The Independent.
I certainly do not want my cells “hijacked”, and nobody has any idea what the long-term effects will look like.
And even if you take one of these new vaccines, it could end up doing no good for you at all if a different strain emerges and becomes dominant.
Unfortunately, I believe that we have entered an era of global pandemics, and I am convinced that all of this enthusiasm about the vaccines that have been developed is completely misguided.
We know that COVID will continue to mutate, but we have no idea at all if the current vaccines will be effective against those future strains or not.
If fighting diseases was easy, we would have eradicated the common cold and the flu long ago.
But we haven’t, and we won’t be eradicating COVID either.
Even now, dangerous new strains of COVID are emerging, and I have a feeling that it is going to be COVID that is going to have the last laugh.
