VENGEANCE IS MINE: SILVER $60/OUNCE!

This article was contributed by Tom Beck of Portfolio Wealth Global.

There have been PLENTY OF DOUBTERS over the years; I’ve seen MY FAIR SHARE of dollar bulls, who keep saying that there’s NOTHING WRONG with America, nothing worrisome about the abuse of the dollar and NOTHING SPECIAL about the growing deficit and national debt.

I will tell them what John Rambo told Murdock when he realized he LEFT HIM FOR DEAD: “I’m coming to get you.”

Gold and silver are coming for you, Mr. Deficit and Mrs. Negative Rates, and they will NOT STOP until each and every doubter HAS PAID his dues.

Courtesy: U.S. Global Investors

We’ve now closed above $2,000/ounce and the market is BEGINNING TO REALIZE that this is normal and that sub-$2,000 bids are NOT REALISTIC.

Bank of America has already revised its price target to $3,000 and many others will FOLLOW SUIT.

It will not be an easy battle; the dollar will fight for every piece of soil in every territory, before finally succumbing to us.

There can be no mistake about it – VENGEANCE IS OURS!

I strongly believe that mining stocks – especially the quality juniors – that we’ve covered and are up by either double-digits or TRIPLE-DIGITS, are just ACT 1 in this saga.

America is a country that is, politically speaking, IN THE SHITTER.

We will see more radicalism, more complexity, more problems and more deficits. Unity is non-existent.

Silver had its best month ever in July. With silver, strength creates MORE STRENGTH, but you can see that rates have STARTED TO BOTTOM on August 6th and could be reversing trend for a bit (bear market rally).

This is absolutely the IDEAL TIME to capitalize on any pullbacks and I FULLY INTEND to.

The dollar bulls have lost faith. It is time TO ATTACK!

As you can see above, July was very bad for rates, which, in turn, made silver gain by an INSANE AMOUNT.

Next up, the metals will have to gather steam. Like an army that charges forward through the night and continues attacking at dawn, it must stop and refuel, at some point. Soldiers can’t be asked to be combative on EMPTY STOMACHS and after two nights without sleep.

When they wake up refreshed, though, they’re still the same squad they were before – better than THEIR COMPETITORS. Gold and silver are superior to the dollar.

Use the pullbacks to your advantage!

In the financial reality we live in, 52mn unemployed Americans isn’t enough to STOP THE RALLY.

Surely, more will come to realize the foolishness of this CREDIT ORGY.

Gold is money. Gold belongs to its owner alone and is independent of counterparty risks.

The best army generals are HARD TO SPOT, since they behave like soldiers and WORK HARD for their team.

Tomorrow, I’ll show you the best DUO COMBINATION in one team since Jordan and Pippen, Kobe and Shaq, Curry and Thompson, LeBron and Wade or Stockton and Malone; I seriously believe this CEO and Chairman duo could lead us to HUGE PROFITS!

Be ready for a BREAKOUT ALERT.

Vengeance will be ours!

SILVER HAS LEFT THE STATION!

This article was contributed by Tom Beck of Portfolio Wealth Global.

I can’t even recall the number of times that I’ve STRESSED THE UNDERVALUATION of silver since January 2017, since the letter was founded; it’s in hundreds, perhaps even thousands of articles.

My letters have been featured in many other publications, yet silver’s MARKET SIZE is so small that only a few are benefiting from this and that’s the way IT SHOULD BE if the masses chose to be indifferent about it.

Doubting the inevitability of this rally was a FOOLISH MISTAKE.

At 120:1, silver was more than a bargain, it was A SCREAMING BUY. The trade was so obvious, yet so few TOOK ADVANTAGE of it.

Courtesy: Zerohedge.com

For silver, the next TRAIN STOP is here. At $27, it is entering a FAMOUS RANGE – between this price and $36 – and it will be a WILD WILD WEST showdown.

Clearly, gold and silver are indicating that the REAL ECONOMY and the stock market economy are not transmitting on the SAME FREQUENCY.

If you look above, silver has many doubters in this area. It fought for years to stay above $30 and attempted to CRACK PAST $35, but it proved TOO DIFFICULT a task, save for that one time when it did, and then went all the way to $49/ounce.

I was there in 2011 and I was selling, mostly at $42, which turned out to be very smart, since it then crashed severely and has never recovered to that price again.

Just like in 2011, we, the investors of 2020, only need silver to PENETRATE $35/ounce and go past it to the outskirts of the universe just the ONE TIME.

When it does, we’ll be there with BELLS AND WHISTLES, waiting to eat the cake and leave it whole.

Courtesy: Zerohedge.com

We are clearly seeing SOMETHING SPECIAL; a moment of historical significance. Right around $2,180, gold will meet a 40yr resistance line, which it FAILED TO BREACH in 2011.

I have a great feeling that it will this time around.
WE ARE KICKING ASS!

More Ugly Details Emerge in Federal Bribery Case with Ohio Utility, Legislators, Lobbyists, Donors, etc.

This article was originally published by B.N. Frank at Activist Post.

Activist Post has reported about recent legislator-utility bribery scandals in both Ohio and Illinois (see 123). Many don’t realize that similar bad behavior has also been pervasive for the last several years with the introduction, promotion, and installation of utility “Smart” Meters – electric, gas, and water.

Americans and people worldwide have been opposed to these 2-way wireless transmitting “Smart” Meters since they were first deployed. Their problems include fires, explosions, increased bills, and more (see 1234). They also DO NOT save meaningful amounts of energy – as originally promised. Unfortunately, this hasn’t stopped legislators, utility companies, and other ne’er-do-wells from continuing to promote and force their installation on homes and throughout communities.

Only time will tell if some of the same folks being investigated for what’s happening in Ohio used similar tactics for promoting and forcing the installation of First Energy “Smart” Meters in the state.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

Householder case: ‘Company C’ CEO Wayne Boich gave cash to HB 6 ‘dark money’ groups

The leader of a Columbus-based firm that made its family fortune in Ohio coal provided $25,000 of the money used to open bank accounts for the “dark-money” nonprofit at the center of the House Bill 6 scandal, The Dispatch has learned.

Wayne M. Boich, chairman and chief executive officer of Boich Companies, also later gave $100,000 to a for-profit company that spent nearly $1.5 million to support former House Speaker Larry Householder’s Republican candidates in the 2018 general election.

Boich is the CEO of “Company C,” listed in a federal court criminal complaint charging Householder and four others with racketeering, The Dispatch confirmed with a source close to the investigation of those involved with the campaign for HB 6.

Officials of the company have no comment, Boich spokesman Mike Dawson said Tuesday.

The House Bill 6 pay-to-play and bribery case, as described in a federal complaint, involves Akron-based FirstEnergy and affiliates routing nearly $61 million to Generation Now, a dark money nonprofit, to secure passage of the bill and defend it against a referendum repeal effort.

The secret money helped ensure a $1 billion-plus electricity ratepayer bailout of two nuclear power plants then owned by a FirstEnergy subsidiary and helped elect “Team Householder” House candidates to provide the votes needed to make him speaker, according to the charges.

More from the Columbus Dispatch:

Householder directs a dirty campaign to save bailout as millions flow:

Activist Post Editor’s Note: This is the final part of four in a series examining the FBI’s criminal complaint against former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder and four others described as the Householder Enterprise. All five men and the group Generation Now were indicted Thursday on federal racketeering charges. Facts in this series are based on public records, including the charging documents, and past and recent interviews with public officials and other sources.

Former Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges asked Tyler Fehrman to coffee in September 2019.

The two apparently had become friends when Fehrman worked to help elect a couple of legislative candidates backed by now-former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder.

But in late 2019, Fehrman was working for the other side: He was the regional manager for the referendum campaign to overturn House Bill 6, known as a bailout for two nuclear power plants owned by a FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiary.

And Borges hoped Fehrman would give him inside information to help the Householder “Enterprise” keep the referendum off the ballot, the FBI says in a criminal affidavit.

In exchange for the information, Borges offered to give Fehrman a substantial sum of money, the affidavit said.

The affidavit doesn’t identify Fehrman by name, but The Blade in Toledo revealed his identity and Fehrman later told The Plain Dealer of Cleveland what happened.

“Never did I ever think that Matt was going to put me in the position that he did,” Fehrman told The Plain Dealer. “One of the first things he told me was, ‘Dude, I don’t have a mortgage anymore. Like, I’m so taken care of. And we could do the same for you.’”

Since utility companies have installed tens of millions of “Smart” Meters – it’s likely that you have them installed on your home and throughout your community. Good luck with that.

Supplemental Learning For This Year’s Online Schooling

With school cancelled for the rest of the year, schools are now enforcing online schooling for their students. Would this be enough? Here are some helpful supplemental learning tips.

Making Online Schooling Work This Year

All over the nation parents and students alike are losing sleep over what will be one of the most interesting years of schooling in the history of the United States of America. We have never tried anything so bold as to take so many kids out of school and leave them out for an extended period.

Whether you believe it is the right move pales in comparison to what kids will think one-month in. Will this type of online schooling work? Will kids make a connection with teachers? Can teachers discipline kids online? Will there be retention? There are so many questions.

We are preppers so, at the very least, we must be prepared if it doesn’t work. If it turns out our kids are just not cut out for online learning, we need to be able to pivot rapidly to assure our child still gets an education.

Open Communication

The single most important thing you can do to prepare for this strange school year is to open a clear line of communication with your child. Be sure they understand what they are getting into and that you are a person they can talk to when they don’t understand a subject.

Kids can get really confused about this because we praise them for good grades and punish them for bad ones, at least we do in my home. However, we are also truly clear about the value of effort and communication.

“If you are trying your best and you just cannot get your head around it, we can handle it together. You are not in trouble for not understanding.”

If kids feel comfortable and are aware of what is asked of them, they can be much more effective even in an online capacity.

Workbooks

Supplemental workbooks are one of the things you should have on hand. If you don’t own some you need to buy them ASAP. Remember what happened to things light free weights when lockdown kicked off?

Well, the same thing is going to happen to home learning tools. We have found the 180 Days workbooks to be an effective supplement for learning. They both reinforce things our son already knew from last year and present new material deeper into the books.

Our son has been out of school since March, so we are using this time to assure he gets caught up on everything from last year. Having workbooks means you can also promote independent learning without a screen around.

Also, 180 Days also features an answer key. I am just saying.

At-Home Testing

While an online school will include some degree of testing you may also consider testing at home to get a better understanding of where your child sits.

Remember, the big takeaway from online schooling and this bump in the road of education is that your child’s education is your responsibility above all. That should be your mantra through all of this.

You can write your own tests or generate tests. Websites like Proprofs give you access to a number of different tests that span many grades.

Home Schooling

Home Schooling | Supplemental Learning for This Year’s Online Schooling

All this change is pushing many families to jump right into homeschooling. Rather than deal with the ever-changing decree of your governor and the teacher’s union, you might be able to homeschool your kids or have someone help with it and take total ownership of your child’s education.

Check out Simple Homeschool for a great resource if you are on the fence or beginning your own homeschooling journey.

While most parents aren’t going to have the time or will to teach their children one on one, you might be the exception. No one will pay attention to your child the way you will. No one will appreciate their struggles like you. For the right family, homeschooling can be the best learning experience.

Play Time

Play Time | Supplemental Learning for This Year’s Online Schooling

Most people are worried about the level of education that is possible with this new model of schooling. What we often forget about is the priceless social interaction between our children and their friends at school.

You could argue they learn more from the fights and arguments then they do from the friendly play. With online schooling, those opportunities are gone. It would make sense to supplement that recess time with playdates and meetups.

It Is Only the Beginning

We are only at the beginning of this journey. It is the journey of the pandemic, of the outcry and of the great cultural revolution of our time. It is hard to say how this will all shake out but if you have children who are looking to you for answers, you better have them.

The idea of public school has mostly removed parents from the equation when it comes to academics. Most parents are happy to help with homework and reward for good grades and maybe reprimand for bad ones.

Everything is shifting. Are you prepared for the shift? Don’t be reactionary that is not how preppers operate.

10 Best SHTF Weapons that are Not Guns

rogue preparedness compound bow non gun weapon
Morgan from Rogue Preparedness with her compound bow, one of our 10 best “non-gun” SHTF weapon choices.

It’s finally happened. The crap hit the fan and it scattered everywhere. Maybe you live in a country that restricts guns, maybe you did not have any guns to begin with, or maybe it is so far into the collapse that firearms and ammunition are impossible to find. As such, you’re stuck with having to resort to more primitive weapons of combat.

by Aden Tate, contributing writer and author of The Faithful Prepper

Even in modern life there are a number of situations where you may not have access to a firearm but still have need to defend yourself. Whether that be a wilderness survival situation, living in an area where firearms are illegal, or when you are stuck in a situation where you no longer have ammo, it is good to have alternative weapon ideas at hand. This concept flows directly into the “two is one and one is none” prepper motto. Look for weapon redundancy and diversity.

As an added bonus, non-firearm weapons are significantly less expensive than buying firearms! So, let’s take a look at 10 best SHTF weapons that are not firearms. In most cases, history will be our guide on what you can add to your existing supply of survival gear.

#1 – Time-Tested Spear

Spears are as old as stone tools, and if you look throughout medieval combat, it was hard to beat somebody with a good spear. Everything else being equal, you pitch somebody with a spear against somebody with a sword, and odds are in the spear holder’s favor.

knife spear tip
Some knives, like this “Renegade Chuckerfor under $20 dollars through Knife Country are designed to be used spear tips in survival situations.

One of the fantastic things about firearms is they give you the ability to engage your enemy at a distance; distance from the enemy being one of the keys to keeping yourself from harm. When it comes to hand-to-hand combat, a spear gives similar advantages. You are able to fight off an opponent with a much shorter weapon without increasing your own risk of injury. Not only can it be thrust toward your foe, it can be thrown as well, further increasing the range with which one can attack an opponent.

Spears are also incredibly cheap and easy to make as well. While ideally a spear will have a metal tip, tribes and armies throughout history have used spears with a wooden or bone tip as well, meaning you can make a deadly weapon with minimal equipment. Because of the minimal amount of metal involved, a spear is easier to smith than a sword. You do not need hour upon hour of blacksmithing practice to make an effective weapon. You can even buy various spearheads ready to mount for ease of construction.

It was because of these reasons, including the particular effectiveness of the spear when used with a mass of other spear-wielding men, that the spear was actually the primary weapon of the Vikings (though not the one they were most well-known for – that honor belongs to the axe).

How to make your own spear:

#2 – Tactical Tomahawk

Aside from being a traditional Indian weapon, tomahawks have been carried by US soldiers into combat since the Vietnam War (source). Depending upon the size, a tomahawk has the potential to be concealed as well. Aside from its ability to be thrown, a tomahawk can chop, cut, be thrusted with the leading point, and you can use the pommel to crush. This gives the tomahawk a very wide berth of fighting moves.

The SOG Tactical Tomahawk is deadly in skilled hands.

A knife is an excellent addition to the man fighting with a tomahawk as well, since these weapons seem to complement each other rather nicely.

Read Why the Tomahawk?

If you’re looking at buying your own tomahawk, I’ve explored the industry for years, and from what I can tell, the best tomahawks come from Cold Steel, SOG, and CRKT.

Cold Steel hawks seem to occasionally need a little sharpening when they show up to your house, and have a more traditional look to them, while SOG and CRKT seem to take a more modern approach to the tomahawk, focusing on more “tactical” varieties.

Want to learn more about fighting with a tomahawk? Check out this video:

#3 – A Big Ol’ Knife

While ideally a secondary weapon for close quarters fighting, one cannot negate the value in having a big ol’ knife when it comes to self-defense. Knives are easily concealable, readily available, and relatively inexpensive, meaning there is no reason not to have a knife in order to protect yourself in the event of an attack.

Knives are both effective and intimidating, in addition to being incredibly versatile. A knife is a perfect EDC tool, as they can easily be used on a daily basis. So, not only is a knife an effective weapon, but it is a daily-use tool as well. It’s because of these two factors that a knife is something you’re likely to have on you at all times.

crocodile dundee knife
Crocodile Dundee’s knife is perhaps the most well-known big ol’ knife from any movie short of the Rambo series.

Read additional SHTFblog knife articles.

As a result, it’s likely to be one of the first weapons that you’ll have access to when you need it. This isn’t to say that it will be the perfect weapon for the situation that you find yourself in, but there’s a very good chance that it’ll be the weapon available for the situation that you are in.

Quality survival knives to buy.

It’s interesting to note the statistics on rape here as well. As I note in my book The Faithful Prepper, during an attempted rape, the rapist has a 90% chance of succeeding if the victim does nothing, a 50% chance of succeeding if the victim screams for help, and a 1% chance of succeeding if the victim fights back with a knife or a gun. As you can see, having ready access to a knife can make a world of a difference.

#4 – Menacing Mace

One of the great things about a mace is that it takes minimal training to use. Pretty much everybody understands the concept of swinging a stick with a heavy end as hard as they can. Because of the physics of the weighted end, a mace can actually be swung with much more force than a sword as well, causing serious damage to an opponent’s armor in medieval times. Footmen in particular cherished this weapon when dealing with plate armor clad opponents (source).

Maces differ from hammers in that the rounded end of a mace allows an equally effective blow to be given regardless of the angle of impact, making this weapon even easier to use.

You can buy a cheaper Pakistani-made mace or a higher-end mace like Cold Steel’s carbon steel mace.

Make your own mace:

#5 – Hammer Time

You would not want to be on the receiving end of United’s M48 War Hammer.

During Medieval times, war hammers were able to cause concussions to enemies even when they were wearing helmets. And though it may be strange and difficult to find an actual war hammer to use for combat, a regular claw hammer can still be a very effective weapon. According to data from 2018, people used hammers to kill more often than they did actual firearms.

That’s not to say that you necessarily want to copy the techniques of a murderer, but it (as well as Medieval history) points to the fact that a hammer can be a very deadly weapon. They take minimal skill to use (you swing them), and the amount of force that they can generate is incredible.

Pretty much everybody has access to them, you can keep one in your car without arousing suspicion (or even close by if you’re involved in some sort of trade as your occupation), and they don’t take up a lot of space either.

#6 – Machetes

USMC machete
United USMC Kukri Machete is a new spin on an old weapon.

Machetes are another one of those weapons that are both cheap and relatively available. They are a functional weapon that you can typically keep within reach in your vehicle without generating any suspicion (at least in rural environments). They do not take up a lot of space, and a machete can do a lot of damage fast.

Throughout many developing parts of the world, a machete is a commonplace tool that you will see people carry with them throughout their day. In a long-term grid down situation, where the developed world is quickly thrown back into being a developing country, you may quickly see machetes become a common weapon.

If you shop for a new machete you will be surprised at the many different styles, qualities, and prices. Machetes have come a long way from their early days!

Either way, it’s worthwhile to know how to defend yourself against a machete attack, and for that, I highly recommend checking out these videos:

#7 – Morning Star

In essence, the morning star is a mace with spikes. While the traditional morning star is a weighted ball with spikes sticking out of it at the end of a stick, the concept can still be applied to easier to make weapons today. Any club such as a baseball bat could have nails or screws driven through it in a post-apocalyptic environment and instantly turn into a rather formidable weapon in a melee.

negan lucille baseball bat
Negan from The Walking Dead used a mace-like baseball bat name Lucille.

Like any mace, minimal skill is required to cause quite a bit of damage, making this a great post-SHTF, non-firearm weapon for those who have minimal experience in fighting in hand to hand combat.

#8 – Not-So Primitive Compound Bow

A compound bow can be an incredibly dangerous weapon in the hands of somebody that knows what they’re doing. Comparatively, crossbows have a lower rate of fire, while recurve bows are gigantic, hard to aim, and hard to pull. In the meantime, a compound bow is an easy to manage size, tends to be easier to draw than a recurve bow, and allows a relatively quick rate of fire.

Any type of bow has the advantage of being silent as well, meaning that you won’t broadcast your location to everybody within a one-mile radius like you might with just about any form of firearm. You can hunt with these as well, meaning that not only can these serve as weapons, but they can be used to harvest meat out in the field too, making a good compound bow an excellent survival tool.

#9 – Katana

The Cold Steel katana, as beautiful as it is deadly.

I came to the belief that the katana is probably the best sword design of all time after a lot of research several years ago (yes, I know it is a controversial opinion). As Mike Loades – a military historian – says, one of the great things about a sword is that it allows skill to triumph over brute force. This means that the small and weaker man may actually be able to stand a chance against the behemoth of an individual with some other form of weapon.

In a sense, the possession of a sword in the hands of a skilled user, is a potent force multiplier when being used against a larger opponent with some other form of melee weapon.

That being said, if you’re planning on relying upon a katana (or any sword for that matter), you need to have some form of training attached to it. I believe that the martial art kendo is very effective for that matter, and would serve one well if they seek to become proficient in the katana.

If you’re looking at buying a katana, I highly recommend checking out Cold Steel dragonfly katanas. They are not cheap, but they are so beautiful you will want to mount them on your wall as the art that they are.

#10 – Taser

While most certainly not a medieval weapon, the taser is still a rather intimidating weapon, and grants quite the force multiplier when it comes to armed combat. While you would most likely rather have a sword, tomahawk, or mace in hand to hand combat, the truth of the matter is that you’re unlikely to have any of those when you need them. A taser on the other hand, easily fits in a purse or a pocket, is often legal to carry, and doesn’t draw lots of suspicion when accidentally spotted.

Really, I would rather have a more deadly weapon if it came down to it, but I’d also much rather have a taser than have nothing. That is their upside, I suppose – being less deadly. They will disable someone without killing them, and stun guns of this type can be easily purchased online for little money. A much higher-end “Taser” brand weapon that shoots is considerably more.

Best Non-Gun SHTF Weapon Final Thoughts

Hopefully, when it all collapses you will have a firearm nearby. But if not, the above weapons could most certainly be used to enable you to better defend yourself. They would most certainly be better than having to resort to your bare fists.

Oh, and for further research into non-firearm weapons, I highly recommend checking out these two very entertaining videos:

Did The “Mushroom Cloud” Explosion In Beirut Just Push The Middle East Closer To A Major War?

2020 just keeps getting weirder.  On Tuesday, an absolutely massive explosion caused a red mushroom cloud to rise high over the city of Beirut, Lebanon.  It is being called “Beirut’s Hiroshima”, and the blast was heard as far away as Cyprus.  You can watch a two minute compilation that contains video clips of the explosion from several different angles right here.  It appears that the shockwave did even more damage than the initial explosion did, and at this hour a large portion of the city of Beirut lies in ruins.  Dozens are dead, thousands are injured, and the entire city is now in a state of complete chaos

Two enormous explosions devastated Beirut’s port on Tuesday, leaving at least 73 people dead and thousands injured, shaking distant buildings and spreading panic and chaos across the Lebanese capital.

The second blast sent an enormous orange fireball into the sky, flattened the harbourside and drove a tornado-like shockwave through the city, shattering windows kilometres (miles) away.

It is being reported that Beirut’s port “is totally destroyed”, and this comes at a really bad time because Lebanon is already in the midst of an epic economic collapse.

In recent months, we have become accustomed to hearing about “mystery explosions” all over the Middle East, and many believe that those mystery explosions indicate that the region is on the brink of a full-blown war.

But this incident was different.  A large section of the capital of Lebanon has been flattened, and many eyewitnesses are comparing the blast to a nuclear explosion.  Here is one example

“It was like an atomic bomb,” said Makrouhie Yerganian, a retired schoolteacher in her mid-70s who has lived near the port for decades.

“I’ve experienced everything, but nothing like this before,” even during the country’s 1975-1990 civil war, she said. “All the buildings around here have collapsed.”

And even Beirut Governor Marwan Aboud brought up “Hiroshima” and “Nagasaki” when asked about the explosion

“This reminds me of what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” said Beirut Governor Marwan Aboud. “I have never seen such widespread destruction. This is a national catastrophe. This is a disaster for Lebanon. We’re already living through days where we can barely keep going.”

“And now this…I don’t know how we’re going to recover from this,” Aboud told Sky News, before bursting into tears.

Immediately after this happened, a lot of people began wondering if this was an Israeli attack, but that does not appear to be the case.

One unnamed Israeli government official told AFP that “Israel had nothing to do with the incident”, and Benny Gantz has actually offered to send humanitarian aid to Beirut…

Offers of aid also came from bitter rivals Israel, with which it is still technically at war. Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, on behalf of the State of Israel, have offered the Lebanese government – via international intermediaries – medical and humanitarian aid, as well as immediate emergency assistance,’ said a joint statement from the two ministries.

If Israel really had been behind this attack, I seriously doubt that they would be offering to patch up their enemies.

And this isn’t Israel’s style either.  The Israelis prefer surgical strikes that avoid civilian casualties as much as possible, and this explosion definitely does not fit that profile.

Instead, it appears that this was some sort of deeply tragic accident.  Lebanese officials have admitted that 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate were stored in the unit that exploded, and that amount of ammonium nitrate can definitely produce the sort of explosion that we just witnessed

Lebanon’s interior minister said ammonium nitrate had been stored in the unit since 2014, with experts agreeing that the chemical would cause the red plume of smoke which burst up from the blast.

Local media are reporting that 2,700 tonnes of the chemical exploded, which scientists making initial calculations said was about three kilotonnes of TNT – roughly a fifth of the Little Boy atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in the Second World War.

But Donald Trump is apparently not buying that explanation.  He told the press that the explosion “was an attack” and that it was caused by “a bomb of some kind”…

At least 60 people were killed and thousands were wounded in an explosion that caused widespread damage in the Lebanese capital. Trump said he had been briefed by “our great generals” and that they “seem to feel” that the explosion was not an accident.

“According to them – they would know better than I would – but they seem to think it was an attack,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “It was a bomb of some kind.”

If this really was an attack, the Lebanese are going to want revenge, because a substantial portion of their capital city has been absolutely decimated.

And needless to say, there are already voices all over the Middle East that are eagerly pointing a finger of blame at Israel and are calling for war.

But unlike the “mystery explosions” that have been happening in Iran, the evidence does not indicate that Israel had anything to do with this great tragedy.

Unfortunately, a lot of people out there are going to jump to their own conclusions, and many of those that hate Israel will use this as another justification to call for armed conflict.

Over the past couple of years, there have been so many moments when it seemed like a major war could break out at any time in the Middle East.  And here in 2020, tensions are running higher than ever.  The IDF has been regularly hitting Iranian and Hezbollah targets all over the region, and we just witnessed a harrowing confrontation on the Syrian border.

It appears that it is just a matter of time before a huge war erupts in the Middle East, and it certainly isn’t going to take much to trigger one.

So could this explosion push the region over the edge?

Let us hope not, but without a doubt this blast is not going to help matters.

The devastation that we just witnessed has caused great pain and anger in Lebanon, and terror groups such as Hezbollah will inevitably try to channel all of that pain and anger in a way that furthers their ultimate goals.

How to Build a LIGHTWEIGHT Bug Out Bag

lightweight bug out bag
Does this person have plenty of gear? No. Will this person reach the bug out location faster? Absolutely.

You will find all kinds of advice on building a bug out bag (BOB). That advice differs depending on the person’s experiences.

Former military personnel, as an example, might come at it from their experience slugging a big MOLLE bag around.

Then you have others who I describe more as “internet preppers,” the people who read about prepping, watch videos about prepping, buy some gear, and that is about the extent of it. It doesn’t matter if they’ve never actually practiced bugging out. In their mind, they have read enough to know about building bug out bags, and that is – pack everything!

by Derrick James, SHTF blog founder and blogger at Prepper Press

I have been a prepper for years. I have also been a hiker for years. Those two interests cross over perfectly when it comes to bugging out, and that hiking experience is what forms my perspective on bug out bags. Having hauled packs up and down countless mountains, I have become very familiar with the many types of hiking gear that doubles as bug out gear. I am also very familiar with something equally important – the importance of being lightweight.

overweight backpack
This person has a pack cover for rain. I learned long ago that these covers are just unnecessary weight. Line your pack with a heavy-duty trash bag instead. They weigh less, cost less, and your gear is always protected.

I should clarify here that I’m using “bugging out” on the assumption it involves traveling long distances by foot. This is different than bugging out by vehicle, where the BOB is just something you throw in your vehicle and go.

I think most people build bug out bags from this “must travel by foot” perspective. And really, who has more experience perfecting that skill than hikers?

Why Build a Lightweight Bug Out Bag?

older man bugging out
The apocalypse does not discriminate by age. Some people go lightweight to be faster. Others go lightweight out of necessity.

When you suggest that someone should build a lightweight bug out bag, they usually hear one thing – “cut gear.” Preppers love their gear, and hearing phrases like “two is one and one is none” underscores how important gear is to prepping. That is generally true, but when it comes to bugging out – weight matters.

You need a lightweight bug out bag because it will be easier to carry for long periods of time. You will be faster, have more energy, and you can evade others much more easily. With lightweight bags – speed is your strength.

While we can all benefit from a lightweight bag, there are three types of people in particular who truly need lightweight bug out bags:

  1. Anyone whose physical strength is not what it used to be (older adults and those of us who could use some extra strength training),
  2. People who will need to travel long distances to reach their bug out location, and
  3. Children.

Even if you do not fall into one of those three categories, it still holds that the lighter you travel, the faster you travel.

How Light is “Lightweight”?

There is no set answer on what the ideal weight is for a bug out bag. What is light for me might be heavy (or featherweight) for you. At the same time, what I need to carry may not be the same as what you need to carry. We have different needs. That said, there are a few standards by which we can measure how heavy a pack “should” be.

ultralight backpacking sleeping pad
The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir is about as light as you can get for a sleeping pad.

Ultralight backpacking is a style of backpacking that focuses on using the lightest, most simple gear you can find – and just the bare minimum gear at that. This is on the more extreme side of hiking, but its principles are used by Appalachian Trail hikers and others who want to cover significant amounts of terrain in short order.

Ultralight backpackers typically aim to have their pack weigh between 10 and 15 pounds.

That is hard to achieve! Not only do you have to strip down to the absolute bare minimum, but you often must pay extra for lighter products. An example would be spending more for the lightest, most comfortable sleeping pad you can find. Lightweight? You bet. Cost more? That too.

A more traditional hiker’s backpack, on the other hand, is said to weigh between 30 and 60 pounds.

Having started my hiking days in the early 90s, I firmly land in that latter category, well before ultralight hiking became a trend. My packs for overnight hikes have ranged between the high 30s for three-season hiking and in the mid-50s for winter hikes. So, I think that general guide is probably accurate.

My winter hike up Mount Katahdin. I cut weight from the pack on summit day so I could ascend more quickly. My friend made a brief YouTube video of our ascent.

The most important thing here is not aiming for a specific weight so much as it is aiming to make your pack as light as can be.

How to Build a Lightweight Bug Out Bag

Going lightweight is where you count ounces, not pounds. “Around 3 pounds” is not an acceptable description of your gear. Is it 3 pounds 8 ounces or 3 pounds 2 ounces? It makes a difference. Ounces add up!

5 Steps to Building a Lightweight Bug Out Bag

Follow these simple steps to examine your existing pack or to build a new one from scratch:

nalgene water filter
This Nalgene bottle by Epic Water Filters has a built-in filter. It eliminates the need to carry both a water bottle and a filter.
  1. Get Organized
  2. Weigh Your Gear
  3. Respect Your Needs
  4. Respect Your Budget
  5. Cut the Weight

1. Get Organized

Find a pen and paper and brainstorm what the minimum gear you would need to reach your bug out destination is. Then organize that gear into piles based on their function (i.e. fire, security, clothing, etc.).

Look for gear that might cross multiple functions. For example, a quality multi-tool could also suffice as all the knife you will need. As another example, you could buy a Nalgene bottle with a built-in purifier. In these cases, it’s not “two is one” but “one is two.”

2. Weigh Your Gear

You need to weigh your individual gear and record the weight. Look closely at the various types of products in the same categories. This will help you to compare the pros and cons of cutting weight in some areas to allow more weight in others. You may find that one product is more rugged than another, but also weighs significantly more. Be realistic with yourself – is the extra durability worth that extra weight? Sometimes the answer will be yes. Other times it will be no.

3. Respect Your Needs

Remember your needs. If you live in Maine, like I do, you need winter gear to cycle in and out of your bag with the seasons. Some people are naturally colder than others, so one person might need a heavier winter hat while another might get by with a lightweight beanie.

Remember, you are lightening your pack to make you more adept at survival, not to sacrifice survival. There is a balance.

4. Respect Your Budget

I noted how ultralight gear usually costs significantly more. The technology has advanced by leaps and bounds. So, while you might want the latest lightweight tech, you have to work within your budget. That is another balancing act.

You can be creative – within limits. For example, you might think about saving money and carrying a simple camping tarp instead of an ultralight bivy tent. There is nothing wrong with that, but the tarp might be better suited to a vehicle bag.

sleeping weight comparison

The tarp in the above example may prove more versatile, and it certainly costs less, but you would be mistaken to think it weighs less. The 10×12 tarp weighs 35.2 ounces. The bivy tent weighs just 16.2 ounces. That is a massive difference. The bivy will pack smaller, too!

5. Cut the Weight

Now you have come to the hardest part of all – figuring out what to cut. The heaviest, most questionable items are your first targets.

Speaking of targets – how much ammunition are you planning to carry? How much does it weigh? Does it make sense to carry less. I know, I know – perish the thought! Alternatively, if you’re packing a heavy handgun, consider buying something smaller and lighter. I told you this is the hardest part!

Here are a few ideas on ways to cut the weight…

Leave it behind. I know some of you will bristle at the idea of leaving equipment behind, but I know I bristle at what I see some people carry on their backs. Ask yourself, “Is this item critical to my survival?” If it’s not, leave it behind. Nothing weighs less than nothing!

Purchase ultralight gear. Buying ultralight gear is the fastest, easiest way to cut weight. This, of course, will have to be balanced by the need to respect your budget. A few of my favorite places to buy lightweight hiking gear are:

There are other stores, but these – EMS in particular – will often run sales with big discounts. In the spirit of respecting your budget, watch for sales across different stores.

grandma gatewood
Ultralight hiker Grandma Gatewood could beat us all in a bug out situation.

Look at your feet. The weight on your feet (your footwear) requires 4-6 times the amount of energy as carrying that same weight on your back. In other words, skip heavy combat boots in favor of lighter hiking boots (again, check the stores I listed above for plenty of light hiking footwear options).

Grandma Gatewood was a pioneer in the field of ultralight hiking. She became the first person to hike the Appalachian Trail three times, and the last time she did it was in 1963 at the age of 75. What did she wear on her feet? Keds! (Read her full story.)

Food. Food is heavy. I know there is nothing worse than being hungry while on the move and burning calories. I also know I over-pack on food every. single. time.

Focus on caloric intake and ease of cooking. Bugging out is supposed to be temporary. You do not need fine dining. If you can get by on a handful of MREs to get to your destination, do that. Using a few of those versus freeze dried foods may allow you to cut the weight of a stove – a big weight savings!

Group Gear. If you know for certain that you will be bugging out with others (i.e. you would rather die than bug out without your spouse, child, etc.), then it makes sense to plan on sharing gear where possible. A camping stove is a perfect example, as is a handheld CB radio, a tent or tarp big enough to cover the number of people in your party, that sort of thing.

You just need to make sure you plan accordingly for two people if that is your plan. Yet another example:

The MicroMo Cooking System (left) weighs just 12 ounces. The SUMO Cooking System (right) weighs 16 ounces. However, the MicroMo is really only good for one person whereas the SUMO is better suited for two. BUT, if you are packing one stove for two people, you save 8 ounces (two MicroMos versus one SUMO).

Final Lightweight Bug Out Bag Helpful Hints

Do not forget to look at the bag itself. A heavy pack is well-suited for a heavy load, but if you are not carrying a heavy load, you do not need a heavier pack. Also, unless you are just planning to bug out across town, you pack should absolutely have a strong, padded waist belt. These are crucial to comfort and getting the weight off your shoulders and onto your hips.

Oh, and one other thing, check your body weight. If you are carrying extra pounds around your waist, do your best to shed some of it. That will benefit you in daily life, not just when bugging out.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions? I don’t pretend to have all of the answers. What works for you?

Best Emergency Canned Water For Preparedness And Survival

Canned WaterIf you’re looking for the best canned water on the market today, you’ve come to the right place! When it comes to stockpiling emergency, canned water makes the process simple.

Just figure out how much you need, make a purchase, and put it on the shelf. Done.

You can avoid the hassles of purchasing other emergency water containers such as:

  • stackable plastic containers
  • 50-gallon drums
  • large tanks
  • water bladders
  • etc.

Each of these “other” water storage options takes a bit more effort and education to get right.

For example, you’ll need to purify the water before you add it to these containers. And you may also need a rotation plan as well.

Plus, there are many amateur mistakes you’ll want to avoid to keep your water safe for the long haul.

And that’s the beautiful thing about canned water – it’s pretty much foolproof!

Not that you’re a fool if you choose canned water – it’s genius, IF you can afford it (which we’ll talk about later).

The bottom line is this:

Canned water makes stockpiling water easy and foolproof. Cans help you avoid any mistakes and keeps the clean, sanitary water at the ready.

That’s why today I’m going to share everything I know about canned water, specifically:

WHAT EXACTLY IS CANNED WATER ANYWAYS?

No need to make this complicated – canned water is water put into sealed aluminum cans.

That Was Easy, right? Not so fast.

Not all canned water is created equal. Some canned water is worthy of your hard-earned dollars, while others are rubbish.

Canned Water With Different Tops

KEY FEATURES TO LOOK FOR IN QUALITY CANNED WATER

Can Size

The size of the can shouldn’t be too small or too large. Why? Because, if the cans are too small, you’ll be spending more money than necessary. Smaller cans require more aluminum per ounce of water.

However, if the cans are too large, they are difficult to handle individually due to the weight. Plus, large cans are harder to keep organized, and stacking them could become an issue due to crushing.

The ideal can size is roughly 40 fl. oz per can.

Quality Seals

The last thing you want your canned water to do is leak all over. Not only would that be an absolute mess, but you’d lose your emergency water investment.

However, canning is a well-established process nowadays. So the odds of getting a batch of cans with poor seals is very low.

But that doesn’t mean it CAN’T happen. So check any cans you receive immediately and return if any of the cans look suspicious.

No Pop Tabs

You DO NOT want the cans to look like soda cans. These cans have pop tabs on top to make it simple to crack them open anywhere WITHOUT a tool.

Sure these pop tabs are great for a soda that will get consumed within a few months from manufacturing. But they only add a weak point when you’re talking about storing something for decades.

Your emergency canned water should look more like a can of beans instead of a soda can. A design that requires a can opener to get at what’s inside. These cans are heartier and will last longer without concern.

Long Shelf Life

Canned water is an investment in your water security for YEARS and DECADES to come. So you want to invest in water that will last as long as possible.

Look a brand of canned water that offers at least 30 years of shelf life guaranteed. And if you store your water in a safe, cold, dark location, it may last well past this expiration date.

So if you’re making this investment in your 30’s or 40’s, this could be a lifetime worth of emergency supplies. (Assuming you never end up needing it along the way. And if you do end up needing it – THANK GOD you had it!)

The Water Canned Is Purified

You’ll want to make sure the manufacturer is using purified water and not just regular tap water. Regular tap water often includes trace amounts of chemicals, bacteria, and organic material.

Over time, these trace contaminants can spur mold growth. Obviously, this will make your lifesaving water dangerous to consume!

So make sure the water in the can includes the proper added-minerals and alkalinity.

These additions are the key to the water staying safe for at least 30 years or more.

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD INVEST IN CANNED WATER

Water is a precious commodity in emergencies, and it can become scarce in any sort of disaster. In a best-case scenario, you would never have a reason to dip into your water storage. But the truth is, emergencies and natural disasters happen, and they rarely give us time to prepare.

By stocking up now, you avoid having to rush to find freshwater in a disaster.

It’s wiser to prepare now and never use your supply than be empty-handed when disaster strikes.

Keep Family Safe For The Future

Drinking water is essential for survival and having a supply on tap for 30 years

Confidence IN Preparations

Some canned water brands have a shelf-life of 30 YEARS! So you never have to worry about it going bad or needing periodic rotation.

Safe Potable Water

Canned water achieves purification by adding minerals and increasing the overall alkalinity.

Easy, Safe Consumption

Storing water in an old-fashioned way can be a time-consuming and challenging affair. But with canned water, all you have to do is open the top, and it’s ready!

So there’s no need to worry about water purification methods such as:

  • boiling
  • adding bleach
  • adding water tablets
  • water rotation strategies
  • etc.

Drop Of Water

EXACTLY HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD YOU STOCKPILE?

Honestly, I cannot decide the amount of canned water is right for you. However, I can recommend how much I think you should consider stockpiling. AND how to calculate the total gallons necessary to meet that goal.

How Much?

At a bare minimum, you should invest in two weeks’ worth of water for your family. This amount is especially right if you’re just starting on your own stockpiles.

Now, I DO NOT believe that is where you should stop. But if you’re worried about the future, two weeks will help you get some basic preparations in place.

And if your finances allow, by all means, go big right away – maybe even get a years’ worth now and be done with it. But most people cannot make such a significant investment.

Once you have two weeks’ worth, it’s time to move to other critical preparations. Then once those are complete, start adding more water to your stockpile.

Again, if you’re just getting started with preparedness, I recommend you read my 10 BABY STEPS TO BASIC PREPAREDNESS GUIDE. It’s 100% FREE!

Once ALL your basic preps are in place, you should begin adding more water to your supplies.

Ultimately, I like targeting at least three months of water to live a resilient life. And if you’re extremely anxious about a doomsday scenario shoot for one year’s worth of water.

But start at two weeks, then move on to two months and keep going if it suits you.

How To Calculate How Much You Need

Ok, this can be a bit tricky. According to FEMA, individuals should drink at least half a gallon of water per day.

So that’s the bare minimum. But FEMA’s not considering what people need for food preps and sanitation needs.

That’s why I like to add another half gallon to that recommendation. And I estimate using 1 gallon per person per day (instead of a half-gallon).

Then you’ll know for sure you’ll have plenty for your set storage goal.

Otherwise, you may end up short of what you “THOUGHT” you had when the crisis hits—running low while cooking your meals, washing your face, and flushing your toilet.

If you agree with my assessment, then the math is relatively easy to calculate.

(# OF FAMIY MEMBERS) X (1 GALLON) X (# OF DAYS) = # GALLONS YOU MUST STOCKPILE

Note: family members may include pets, especially any large breed dogs

So let’s say you have a family of 4 and you’d like to have two months of emergency canned water stockpiled.

(A Family of 4) X (1 Gallon Per Person) X (60 Days) = 240 Gallons

NOTE –

You may want to keep your drinking water and your food/sanitation water separate. This strategy allows you to use canned water for drinking. And use other water storage methods for your cooking and sanitation needs.

This strategy can save some money since canned water is not the cheapest way to do this. In this case, use ½ gallon for your canned water needs and ½ gallon for your “other” water needs.

So the equation would become 4 X 0.5 X 240 = 120 Gallons

But again, I recommend you also store 120 Gallons beyond just the canned water. So you’d need 120 gallons of canned water and 120 gallons of “other” water.

singed 100 dollar bills

WHY IS CANNED WATER SO EXPENSIVE

Oddly, water is a cheap commodity in much of the modern world. For example, most people in the U.S. pay less than $0.025 per gallon.

These low costs seem odd to me because water is such a precious resource – more valuable than gold. We need it to live! That’s why some feel like water should be a RIGHT, so keeping it extremely affordable is a human right.

Politics aside, water has traditionally been an abundant resource in most modern cities. But that concept is coming into question in recent years.

Cities across the world are beginning to run out of WATER! Yikes.

But why is water stored in cans so much more expensive than water stored in 50-gallon drums or large tanks?

First off, the market isn’t huge for canned water drinkers. So there are very few vendors who make canned water. On top of this, material costs tend to be more expensive for aluminum, and shipping water is HEAVY!

So shipping costs are WAY higher vs. an empty plastic container.

Honestly, that’s what’s causing the most significant disparity in price. Plastic containers don’t weigh all that much when shipped empty. But canned water is filled and shipped from the factory.

So shipping, material, and labor costs, as well as a lack of competition, boost the price of canned water.

Ok, it’s more expensive but HOW much more precisely?

To answer this, let’s make a price comparison between canned water vs. stackable water storage containers:

Stack Of Canned Water For Emergencies

Alka Power Emergency Drinking Water

6,048 fl. oz. of canned water currently costs about $1,184.04 (on the day this post went live).

6048 fl. Oz. EQUALS 47.25 Gallons

A 30 Gallon package of stackable containers currently costs $119.99 (on the day this post went live)

AND a 20 Gallon package of stackable containers currently costs $89.99 (on the day this post went live)

So 30 Gallons + 20 Gallons = 50 Gallons – slightly more than the 47.25 (close enough).

Legacy Premium Stackable 5-Gallon Containers

OR $119.99 + $ 89.99 = $289.98 for 50 Gallons worth of water storage!

But wait, you still need to fill them with water BUT (big but) tap water is currently CHEAP. Even the most costly locations in the U.S only charge around $0.025 per gallon (in the year 2020).

So at 50 Gallons, that’s only $1.25!!

The total cost for storing 50 gallons of water TODAY using stackable containers IS ONLY = $289.98 + $1.25 = $291.23

So on a cost per Gallon comparison, you end up with:

So buying canned water for your emergency water storage costs more than 4X MORE. Yikes!

Too rich for my blood!

That’s why I bought a bunch of these stackable 5-gallon containers for my emergency water storage needs.

You can go here to read my step by step process and the exact stackable water containers I bought.

Joe Biden Is About To Pick His Running Mate, And That Choice Could Have Extremely Serious Implications For Our Future

Originally, I wasn’t going to write about Joe Biden’s search for a running mate, but I changed my mind.  Most of the time running mate picks are of relatively little consequence as far as the election outcome is concerned, and many of those on tickets that do not ultimately win end up being forgotten by the public fairly rapidly.  If you doubt this, just try to name the running mates of failed presidential candidates Bob Dole, Michael Dukakis and John Kerry off the top of your head.  In fact, many of you that are reading this article probably cannot name Hillary Clinton’s running mate without looking it up.  But this time is different.

In 2020, Joe Biden is very likely picking someone that will become the president of the United States.

And I am not talking about in eight years either.  Over the past couple of years, Joe Biden has frequently made comments that indicate that he may not serve more than one term.  The following comes from the Detroit News

In an effort to ease concerns about his age, the 77-year-old presumptive Democratic nominee has said he wouldn’t seek reelection if his mental or physical health declined. He has also referred to himself as a “transition candidate,” acting as a bridge to a younger generation of leadership.

Biden is rarely known for sticking to a script, and the comments are evidence of his candid style. But they’re also contributing to intense speculation about who is best positioned to lead the party after him.

And considering the fact that he is currently 77 years old, there is absolutely no guarantee that he will even make it through a single term.

Of course the Biden campaign has been saying all of the right things about his health, and a recent three page health assessment described him as “healthy” and “vigorous”

Dr. Kevin O’Connor of The George Washington University released a three-page medical summary of Biden’s health on Tuesday at the request of his patient, in which he described Biden as a “healthy, vigorous, 77-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief.”

But everyone can clearly see that the Joe Biden of 2020 is definitely not the old Joe Biden.

I was on YouTube recently and a Joe Biden fundraising ad popped up before the video I was going to view, and out of curiosity I decided to watch it.  As I watched his pitch, I was stunned by his inability to get the words out.  This was a recorded ad, so his team could have redone it over and over again until they got it perfect, and apparently the version that I saw was the best that they could come up with.

Of course there isn’t anything wrong with declining in our capabilities as we get older.  It happens to every generation, and it is going to happen to all of our leaders eventually.

But with Joe Biden at such a clearly advanced state of decline, many believe that it was a huge mistake for the Democrats to nominate him.  On his podcast, Joe Rogan made this point very bluntly earlier this year

That’s the problem the Democratic Party is having right now with that Joe Biden guy. You guys have to be able to call it out. You can’t let this slide, because everybody else sees it, and Trump is going to eat him alive,” Rogan said. “He’s going to eat that guy alive.”

“The guy can barely remember what he’s talking about while he’s talking,” Rogan said. “I’m looking at this like a medical condition.”

If the election was held today, the polls indicate that Joe Biden would have a really good chance of beating Donald Trump.

And if Biden wins and he can’t make it through the next four years, that would mean that his running mate would become the next president of the United States.

In fact, there are some people that are speculating that there is a possibility that Joe Biden may not even make it to election day in November.

So whoever Biden picks as his running mate may have to fill his shoes sooner rather than later.

At this point, it appears that Kamala Harris, Karen Bass and Susan Rice are the three leading contenders.  The following comes from CNN

In more than two dozen interviews with CNN in recent days, members of Congress, top Democratic donors, Biden allies and others close to the vice presidential vetting process said California Rep. Karen Bass, the 66-year-old chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, has gained real traction in the late stage of the search. Amid furious last-minute lobbying and speculation about Biden’s historic decision, California Sen. Kamala Harris and Susan Rice, Barack Obama’s former national security adviser, are also believed to be among the most serious contenders.

Personally, I think that the choice is going to be either Harris or Bass based on the buzz that I am hearing.

Harris has been widely viewed as the favorite throughout this process, but Bass seems to have picked up a lot of momentum right here at the end.

In either case, Biden is going to face a lot of criticism for his choice.  The previous remarks that Bass made about Fidel Castro are starting to get a lot of attention, and her links to communist organizations go back for decades.

As for Harris, her big problem is that a lot of people just don’t like her.  “Likability” is one of the most important traits that a politician in America can have today, and that is one area where she really comes up short.  It is the big reason why her presidential campaign completely flopped, and it is definitely a factor in why so many top Democrats have been publicly lobbying against her.

If for some reason Biden was not able to make it to election day, all of a sudden either Harris or Bass would be Trump’s opponent, and needless to say that would dramatically shift the outlook of the race.

On the other hand, if Biden does make it to November and he is able to win, there is a very good chance that he will not make it all the way through his first term.

And that would mean that “Vice-President Harris” or “Vice-President Bass” would become the leader of the free world.

The last time a vice-president ascended to the presidency without being elected was when Gerald Ford replaced Richard Nixon in 1974.

We could soon see it happen again, and considering the fact that our nation is moving into extremely troubled times, such a transition could occur at a very critical moment in our history.

This choice by Joe Biden could have extremely serious implications for our future, and from what I am hearing his pick is coming very soon.

New To Survival? 10 Baby Steps To Basic Preparedness

10 Steps To Basic PreparednessIf you’re brand new to the idea of getting prepared, you’re likely feeling quite anxious!

It’s natural to feel this way. Why? Because it’s terrifying to take a hard look in the mirror and realize just how unprepared you are.

And if you’re not careful, this anxiety can grow. It can develop into severe stress, sleepless nights, and a sense that you’re running out of time.

But, if you harness these feelings correctly, they can be good! Why? Because they are incredibly motivating! Those gut-wrenching feelings are preparing you to take meaningful action.

But being ready to take action is different than actually taking action.

Because once you decide “it’s time to prepare,” – you immediately hit a MAJOR roadblock.

Which actions should you take first?

You’re ready, but now you’re overwhelmed and confused. Why? Because the amount of survival and preparedness information available today is STAGGERING…

There are hundreds of millions (or billions) of blog posts, thousands of courses and books, etc.

  • Where should you begin?
  • What should you do first?
  • Which courses should you buy?
  • Which membership or communities should you join?
  • Who should you follow?
  • Whose advice is trustworthy?
  • Should you stockpile water or food first? And how much of each should you store?
  • What about bugging out vs. hunkering down?
  • What survival gear is Necessary vs. Optional?
  • How much will this cost?
  • Are there any cheaper alternatives?
  • What if you can’t afford it?

These are all excellent questions. BUT NO ONE seems to have any clear answers. Just tons and tons of “random (sometimes contradictory) advice.”

UNTIL NOW…

I HEAR YOU, and I want to help YOU!

“Jack”

My name is Jack, and I’m the co-founder of two prominent websites in the survival and preparedness space.

SkilledSurvival.com & TheResilientLife.co

I’ve been living and breathing preparedness my entire life. And I’ve been sharing my thoughts and advice online since 2013. Since that time, I’ve helped more than 10,158,350 people along the way.

And I get the same questions from those new to preparedness: “how do I get started”? What should I do first, second, third, etc.”?

So I decided to create a FREE Baby Step Preparedness guide to help you make wise decisions from day one.

By following the 10 BABY STEPS below, you’ll quickly stop being one of the “fragile masses.” (i.e., those who are 100% unprepared and utterly dependent on others when disaster strikes).

Instead, EACH Baby step moves you in the right direction – towards a more resilient lifestyle.

Once you’ve completed all 10 Baby Steps, you’ll have an excellent base of supplies, tools, and the confidence to survive most future disasters.

Now, these BABY steps ONLY focus on the very BASICS of preparedness. And there is so much more to preparation than just the basics.

But as with any new skill, you start with the basics first. Only then, once you’ve got the basics in place, do you move on to more advanced supplies, tools, and tactics.

Think of your journey to resilience, like building a house.

You need a rock-solid foundation in place before you build any walls. And you need walls before you can add a roof.

And hopefully, someday soon, you’ll become a member of the resilient few – Note: BABY STEP 10 has more information on how to move beyond the basics and towards mastery.

TACT Bivvy Main Image

BABY STEP 1 – INVEST IN A “LAST RESORT” WARMTH TOOL – 1 PER FAMILY MEMBER

Note: feel free to skip if you live in temperate climate year-round

Right out of the gate, this first Baby Step is a bit controversial in the survival space.

Some survivalists suggest stockpiling water is your #1 priority. And for most disasters, that is 100% correct. Why? Because you can only survive about three days without water.

TACT Bivvy In Hand

However, you won’t survive long in below-freezing temps without a way to stay warm. And this is possible in places like Michigan in mid-February if the power goes out.

That’s why I recommend you invest in one TACT Bivvy for every member of your household.

Now, if you have a wood stove or fireplace in your home and a nice pile of wood, you can consider skipping this one. But, if not, then get some TACT Bivvy’s.

They work by trapping your body heat (such as when you’re shivering uncontrollably). And it’s made of Mylar (which doesn’t allow any air particles (or heat) to pass through it).

Hopefully, you’ll never need a TACT Bivvy, but if you do, it could save your life.

BABY STEP 2 – A STOCKPILE OF 2 WEEKS OF WATER PER PERSON (assume 1 gallon per person per day)

Why two weeks? Why not more?

Because if you’re just starting, this amount of water is attainable within a short time frame.

Or, as I like to say, “It’s doable and affordable.”

Plus, it establishes the safety net for the majority of future disaster scenarios. Sure, it’s not enough for the long term “doomsday” scenario. However, with two weeks’ worth, you’re covered for the most likely disasters.

Many people ask me, “Why 1 gallon per person per day? That seems like MORE THAN NECESSARY…”

It might be, but here’s why I say 1 gallon per person per day:

1)    I’d rather have slightly more water than not enough to make it two weeks. It’s hard to say how hot it might be (especially without an AC unit running). When it’s hot out your body needs more water to replace the loss of water due to sweating

2)    You’ll also need water for both COOKING and SANITATION – so you’ll only be consuming about half the water you’re storing. You’ll use the other half for cooking meals and hygiene.

Legacy 6 Pack Stackable Water Containers

Legacy 6 Pack Stackable Water Containers

Now you could buy bottled water from the grocery store IF that’s the best you can do short term.

But, if you have the means, I recommend you get a quality set of water storage containers. I selected Legacy Storage’s water containers and if you’re interested in seeing what I did, feel free to read my step by step article here.

I’ve also wrote a blog post called 9 Best Water Storage Solutions and Mistakes To Avoid.

Once you’ve got your two weeks water stockpiled, it’s time to shift your focus on the next baby step – calories.

BABY STEP 3 – 2 WEEKS OF NON-PERISHABLE FOOD PER PERSON

Why two weeks? Why not more?

Because (like water), if you’re just starting out, is an amount of food that’s attainable within a relatively short time frame.

Again, it’s not nearly enough for a long term “doomsday” scenario. But with two weeks of calories per family member, you’ll survive most short term disasters.

Now, how do you decide how many calories equates to two weeks’ worth of food? I made this easy to use calorie chart to help:

For each family member – use the gender/age (across the side) and activity level (across the top) to get their approximate calorie per day number.

Then multiply that number by 14 (i.e., two weeks).

Finally, add up each family member’s two-week calorie needs.

You now have your entire family’s two-week calorie requirement!

Now you can either go one of two directions to stockpile calories:

  • DIY (do it yourself)
  • DFY (done for you)

DO IT YOURSELF

If you go the DIY route – you’ll be buying bulk sacks of rice and beans and acquiring lots of spices to make bland food palatable.

Plus, you’ll want to stock up on large jars of peanut butter – which are always a wise addition.

You could also make your own hardtack (which is a very long shelf life cracker).

For meat, you could make your own pemmican.

So as you can see, the DIY route is not quick OR easy. Because when you do it right, it takes a lot of time and energy.

If this sounds daunting, I suggest you take a shortcut, go with the Done For You (DFY) route.

DONE FOR YOU

I recommend you check out Valley Food Storage OR Legacy Food Storage.

Both companies have first-rate freeze-dried meals that are well packaged and can last 25+ years if stored in a cool, dry, vermin-free location.

You should also add some 25+ year canned meats to your survival pantry.

The bottom line is:

You MUST put some time and energy and funds into getting a two weeks supply of non-perishable foods into your pantry ASAP.

The sooner the better!

Sure, more food and water stockpiles will be a BIG focus once you’re finished with all 10 baby steps.

But, for now, it’s time to move onto the next baby step – how to cook this food without relying on your power company.

BABY STEP 4 – HAVE AN ALTERNATIVE COOKING METHOD READY

You can have all the rice, beans, or freeze-dried foods you want – but it’s NOT very useful if you CAN’T cook it.

You need a way to boil water as your most basic food prep.

Now, there are all sorts of advanced solutions to this issue, including:

  •   Wood cookstoves
  •   Solar ovens
  •   Backpacking stoves
  •   Etc.

And in a pinch, a backyard fire pit can work as well – but it’s not very efficient. You’ll go through a wood stockpile way too FAST that way.

EcoZoom Rocket Stove

So instead, I recommend investing in a rocket stove (one of the best ones for simple water boiling is the Eco-Zoom Versa).

So you can buy a rocket stove OR you can DIY and build your own.

But the bottom line is:

A rocket stove is the most efficient way to boil water using wood. Heck, you can use small twigs and sticks to boil water.

The key is to get the most heat from the least amount of fuel, and that’s EXACTLY what rocket stoves do.

Now you should also invest in some fuel to do with your rocket stove. DON’T assume you’ll be able to wander out to the woods after a disaster occurs.

So, make sure to stock enough firewood to cook two weeks’ worth of food you’ve stockpiled. This amount will depend on how large your family is.

BONUS – In a winter power outage, you can use your rocket stove to heat a small outdoor hut or shed. Just be very careful of burning wood inside a home or contained space. Not only is there the risk of starting a fire, but the fumes can accumulate and become toxic to breathe. But in a pinch, a rocket stove could save your fingers and toes from frostbite.

Note: Here’s an article I wrote about rocket stoves (it includes a few of the best ones on the market today plus some DIY ideas).

BABY STEP 5 – INVEST IN A HAND CRANK RADIO

This one is simple – invest in a quality hand-crank radio.

In any widespread disaster, where chaos is ruling the day, you CAN’T rely on electrical power. Because if the power goes out, how are you going to find out WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

  • Is it safe to go outside?
  • Are more attacks happening? Where?
  • IS the water supply compromised? Are roadblocks in place?
  • Is the storm passed?
  • Where is flooding the worst? Etc.

When the power is out, most electronic devices (TV’s, Computers, phones) won’t work.

That’s why you need to get a hand-crank radio.

It’s exactly what it sounds like – an AM/FM/Weather radio that includes a hand crank.

The hand crank allows you to generate your own power to charge the radio’s battery.

Plus, with some advanced models, you can use the hand crank to charge a phone as well.

A hand-crank radio is one of the BEST and first pieces of survival gear you should buy. Just make sure you buy a quality one since it may become your main life-line for information in a crisis.

NOTE: Here’s an article I wrote that reviews many of the best hand crank radios on the market today.

BABY STEP 6 – BASIC DEFENSE MEASURES (home & personal)

Now this one is a bit tricky because each person’s current situation is different. So I’m going to focus on what I consider the “bare minimum” for both home and self-defense.

Of course, the more defense measures, the better, but these are Baby Steps, so get these in place first, if you’re 100% fragile in these important defense categories.

Personal Defense

Ideally, for personal defense, you’re trained to use firearms and have plenty of ammo to go with your sidearm of choice. And preferably, you also have some martial arts training as well.

But I consider both of those more advanced personal defense measures.

If you’re truly starting from scratch in the personal defense department, then I recommend you invest in a high-quality pepper spray.

Pepper Spray

They are proven to be a powerful deterrent to attackers.

They are also non-lethal and straightforward to use (just point and spray). Plus, you can easily carry a small canister of it just about anywhere.

I recommend a pepper spray called “Devil Juice” – it uses insanely HOT peppers, and it has a dominant spray pattern.

Plus, it’s the right size to neutralize several attackers, if necessary.

Home Fortification

Home fortification can be a tricky topic to discuss. Everyone’s situation is so unique. For example, renters have fewer options than homeowners.

But I believe there are bare minimum strategies you must put place from a home defense – which includes:

Deadbolts and Basic Alarms

Deadbolts have proven to slow down forced entries significantly.

Deadbolts prevent single kick break-ins.

So with a deadbolt, a forced entry situation will take longer, and it will create more of a ruckus. Both time and noise are significant deterrents for thieves or bandits.

If you rent and don’t have deadbolts, I recommend you make a formal request to the landlord. In my opinion, it’s inexcusable for a landlord to be so cheap to refuse to install deadbolts.

NOTE: Most landlords will want to avoid the potential liability and install deadbolts if your formal written request includes the words: “I am concerned about my safety.”

Now, if you rent, regardless of whether you have deadbolts or not, you should invest in a door stop alarm OR door jammer bar for each entry point.

These are tools you can put in place nightly or just keep for a future disaster. They’re an added layer of security when you’re frightened and want something extra to prevent a hostile break-in.

Plus, many of the doorstop or jammer bars include alarm triggers built-in. So not only are you securing your doors, they will alert you, and your neighbors should someone try to break-in.

Now for homeowners, ideally, you have deadbolts. And if you have the means, a basic alarm system.

You don’t need an expensive hard-wired system. I’ve installed a self-monitoring alarm system by Abode (here’s their starter kit)it works great for my needs.

Also, I recommend installing motion-sensing lighting near ALL entryways – especially doors in a backyard area or ones with concealment nearby (fence, bushes, shed, etc.).

The bottom line is:

You must make it more of a challenge for someone to break in your home than your surrounding neighbors. That way, an intruder will likely move on to easier targets.

That’s the goal with this baby step – target hardening!

Do as much as you’re able to do, but ideally, you secure your doors, add an alarm of some sort and motion-detecting lights (if possible).

NOTE: Here’s an article I wrote about how to reinforce doors (which includes information about door stop alarms and door jammer bars – plus, so much more).

p.s. If you install motion-sensing lighting, make sure any potential intruder can’t just walk up to the bulb and twist it off. Many modern light covers have open bottoms to allow downcast lighting, but you’ll want to modify the light cover to prevent this vulnerability. OR install a security floodlight high enough to prevent quick access.

BABY STEP 7 – BASIC MEDICAL SUPPLIES / KNOWLEDGE

It’s essential to keep a basic first aid kit in your home. AND you must be able to use the supplies in that first aid kit.

You can’t rely on your family doctor, urgent care, or the ER during a widespread disaster.

Why? Because first off, the emergency rooms may be full. Especially when you layer on a global pandemic like we are experiencing in 2020, causing ICUs to already be at full capacity.

OR, worst yet, it may be too dangerous to attempt a journey to get to them. And if things are bad enough, doctors and first responders may choose to stay at home. They will prioritize their own family’s safety instead of heading into the hospital.

Either way, just like power, you’re utterly fragile if you don’t have any medical supplies in your home.

That’s why you must learn basic first aid AND have the supplies you need to perform that first aid in a pinch.

I highly recommend you invest in a MyMedic First Aid Kit and The Survival Medicine Handbook.

I’ve reviewed both of these products, and I vouch for their quality.

Here are a few of the MyMedic kits you can choose from:

With these two resources in place, you’ll be ready to provide some basic medical care in a pinch. That’s a much more resilient way to live.

NOTE: Here’s an article I wrote about building your own survival medical kit (if you choose to go the DIY route instead).

BABY STEP 8 – INVEST IN A GAS MASK/FILTER

Now you may be thinking, “A Gas Mask? That sounds like an ADVANCED survival tool,” – but you’re wrong.

Why? Because if the air you breathe ever becomes toxic, without one, you’re screwed.

IF it’s a nasty chemical attack, you could be dead within a few hours. If it’s nuclear fallout, you’ll be dead in a few months or a few years…

Here’s a list of just a few of the disasters a gas mask is necessary to support your survival:

  •   Nuclear Attacks (fallout)
  •   Chemical Attacks (lots of air-based toxins)
  •   Out of Control Riots (tear gas – or worse)
  •   Super Volcanic Explosion (ash fallout)
  •   Deadly Pandemics (viruses)
  •   Wildfires (smoke/ash)

So I believe every household should own at least one gas mask (plus a couple of filters). Ideally, you’d get a gas mask for each family member – but the costs can go up quickly.

If you own at least one, then the rest of the family can remain hunkered down. Usually, you only need one person to leave home for supplies runs, etc.

It’s not ideal, but having at least one gas mask gives you a chance and MORE options in a worst-case scenario.

Now, I’ve spent hours and hours researching different gas masks and manufactures, and I’ve settled on two leading suppliers:

Both of these masks are high quality AND worth every penny.

You’ll need to buy at least one gas mask per family (feel free to buy one per person if you have the means to do so).

You’ll also want to buy AT LEAST two gas mask filters per mask.

NOTE: Here’s an extensive gas mask article I wrote if you have any questions or want to do even more research.

BABY STEP 9 – BUILD A BASIC BUG OUT BAG

If you’re new to preparedness, you’ll want to hunker down for most emergencies.

Why? Because leaving the safety of your home and supplies could end in disaster.

Most disasters will have an apex. There will be a ramp-up of chaos, but at some point, things will settle a bit, and a cleanup period will begin.

For these disasters, it’s safer to hunker down and wait things out.

However, with that said, there are disasters when hunkering down is NOT possible. Take a flood or fire, for example.

If your neighborhood is flooding or burning – it would be STUPID to stay.

That’s why everyone must put together a small go-bag or bug out bag—a bag filled with a few necessary supplies that’s ready to grab at a moment’s notice.

You’ll want to be able to grab your loved ones and your bug out bags and be out the door in under 1 minute.

Right now, don’t worry about having a bug out location – that’s for advanced survivalists…

Again, for now, you’re going to stay home unless the disaster forces you out. And if you’re forced out, get away from the path of danger and find some open land or campsite to wait things out.

Also, don’t assume your vehicle will be available. Sure, it probably will be for most disasters, but you must plan for the worst, and that means walking. So think about what’s the safest paths of travel to exit your neighborhood.

NOTE: Today should also be the day that you look at the ½ full mark on your gas tank as your new EMPTY as gas will be hard to come by in an emergency. It is always best to have at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle.

Finally, if you don’t have a bug out bag, I recommend the EVATAC Combat bag.

It’s got quality buckles, lots of compartments, a MOLLE strap system; it’s the right size (not too big or small).

It’s the bag I use for my bug out gear and supplies.

NOTE: Here’s my 104 Item Bug Out Bag Checklist article – this will help give you some ideas on what to put into your Bug Out Bag. Just remember, this is an idealist – I DO NOT recommend you put EVERYTHING on the list in your bug out bag because it would quickly become TOO HEAVY.

BABY STEP 10 – BECOME PART OF THE RESILIENT FEW

Once you’ve completed Baby Steps 1-9, you’ve got a simple survival plan in place for all major categories.

  1. WARMTH
  2. WATER
  3. FOOD
  4. COOKING
  5. COMMUNICATIONS
  6. DEFENSE
  7. MEDICAL
  8. AIR
  9. BUG OUT

So I want to say, “CONGRATULATIONS – your basic needs are taken care of for MOST future disaster that may last multiple weeks!

Take a deep breath and celebrate; this journey was likely a massive achievement for YOU!!

Yet, with that said, it’s NOT ENOUGH if you want to live a resilient life.

Sure, what you now have in place is better than nothing. But you’re still fragile to any epic disasters or ones that last more than just a few weeks.

But the good news is, NOW your ready move into advanced levels of preparedness.

You’re ready to begin your journey of creating a resilient life.

I’m talking about a life where most of your decisions and choices are to focus on reducing your fragility to life’s uncertainties.

For example –

  •   Having less debt and more cash makes you less fragile to financial crises (both personal and global).
  •   Creating a rainwater harvest system to capture rain off your roof – gives you a “FREE” fresh supply of water should the taps ever run dry. A system like this makes you much less fragile to a shared municipal water delivery system.
  •   Build a side business to create resiliency in your career and cash flows.
  •   Growing a backyard garden adds resiliency to your life by providing food to your table, that’s not JUST from a grocery store.

These are just a few of the actions you can take to help reduce your fragility and increase your resiliency.

And as you become more resilient, you’ll likely find you’re a less stressed, calmer, happier, more fulfilled person. You’ll be proud of what you’ve accomplished, and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy life so much more.

Living a resilient life STARTs by reducing anxiety and stress. But once you get past the basics and join the resilient few – you’ll begin enjoying your life MORE.

I genuinely believe our modern culture of extreme luxury, and comfort is fragile. AND it’s NOT fulfilling or creating truly long-lasting satisfaction and happiness.

My answer to that is to The Resilient Life—a system I built to help you become the BEST, MOST confident, and PREPARED version of yourself.

A member of the “resilient few” who’s ready for WHATEVER storms of life come your way.
