2012 Scare: Why It Is A Good Thing

admin By admin December 26, 2018

Unless you’ve lived under a rock for the last couple of years, you have heard some of the hype that surrounds 2012. No, I’m not talking about the movie 2012 or even the 2012 Presidential campaign, I’m talking about the year 2012 and teotwawki (the end of the world as we know it).

Cusp of a Great Cycle.

For my two readers that don’t know what I’m talking about (just kidding), there is an ancient (and very accurate!) Mesoamerican calendar system that was created by the ancient Olmec. This Mesoamerican long count calendar system was later adopted by the Mayan and ends on December 21, 2012. It ends then because this date marks the end of a b’ak’tun; a cycle of years that equals 144,000 days (a little more than 394 years).

So, whats the big deal?

Nothing! Nobody really knows what the end of this cycle means, or even if it means anything at all. For those that do assign a meaning, the general consensus is that it marks a new era for mankind…a time of great change. Some people think that the change will be good, that their will be a “great awakening” among the masses, that we are entering a cycle of greater spiritual enlightenment. They think that the increasing respect that people have for others and themselves (self-respect) is going to continue until our society heals itself. Maybe.

Many others have concluded that this change is going to be bad, that the world is going to end or that we will encounter a worldwide disaster. They talk of the super-massive black hole at the center of our galaxy destroying the earth, geomagnetic reversals creating havoc, and even of a planet called Planet X or Nibiru that will collide with the Earth sometime in 2012. Really??

It’s all hype.

If you told a modern-day Mayan (thousands of Mayan descendants still live in the Yucatán Peninsula) that the world was going to end in Dec 2012, they wouldn’t believe you. If you told them that Utopia is right around the corner they wouldn’t believe that either. Both are western concepts. The truth is somewhere between the two extremes.

So, why is the hype good?

The positive hype is good because it helps people focus on respect (for others and self-respect), and the dignity that follows when it is given. This increasing dignity will continue to wash away the hate that is eating up humanity like a cancer.

The negative hype is good because it helps people realize that they should be ready for disasters of all kinds. The world is a chaotic place and when life wants to throw you a curve ball you better be ready! Between the 2012 hype and all the natural disasters that have occurred over the last few years, quite a few people are looking at preparedness for the first time. Many are learning the skills that are necessary to being a prepared person and are accumulating survival gear to help them get through any future crisis. That’s good, because there is a real danger.

House of Cards.

We have developed our society to the point that it is fragile. We rely extensively on technology, worldwide logistics, instant communication, a stable currency, plentiful food,…you get the point. It is like a giant house of cards, and it won’t take much for it all to come tumbling down.

Anything that gets people to become more self-reliant and reverse the dependency on this house of cards will help our society recover all that much faster – just in case it does collapse. And if a piece of survival gear such as a water purification bottle saves just one life in the meantime…then the hype is all good.
