Bear Attack – Best Safety Measures While Camping

When it comes to camping, there is nothing more exciting than experiencing the raw natural feeling of the great outdoors. From the tranquil streams, amazing scenery, the quiet whispers of the forest, to a bear attack.

Yes, you read that right. Let’s be clear; if you are in the wilderness, there is a chance that you might have an encounter with actual wildlife. Now, this can normally range from birds, bunnies, and maybe the occasional skunk, but there are times where a bear encounter is possible.

Here we will take a look at how to ensure that everyone is, in fact, safe in the off chance of a bear encounter in the wild. In this article, I have provided some important tips to avoid bear attacks while enjoying the outdoors.

Bear Attack – Best Safety Measures While Camping

North America is home to different species of bear, namely the black, brown, grizzly, and polar bear. Of these, only polar bears are interested in humans as a source of food. The rest typically do not attack you, unless you give them a reason to.

Although, these bears rarely attack humans for predatory purposes, and there is no need to have an irrational fear of a bear attack while camping, one must definitely consider this issue with the utmost seriousness.

You need to take certain precautions and equip yourself with proper knowledge about countering a bear attack while camping in bear country; more so, if you intend to take kids along.

Safety Tips to Avoid a Bear AttackA Grizzly Bear in Alaska taking a rest on a fallen tree-bear attack

If you’re planning on entering a bear country, you need to be prepared for the possibility of a bear attack. However, taking certain precautions for bear safety when camping can prevent the risk of ‘face-to-muzzle’ encounter with a bear.

Before CampingA sign board in the Lynn Headwaters Regional Park telling hikers to Be Bear Aware-bear attack

Before setting up the tent at a campsite, it’s important to talk to park officials regarding any recent sightings of bears. Forest rangers or park officials are often well-informed about the characteristics and habits of individual bears in the region. This information can help you in evaluating the relative safety of your campsite.

Be sure to inspect the campsite yourself for any signs of bears. Crushed bushes, upturned rocks, uprooted small trees, often indicate bear activity. You can also, look for bear trails, markings on trees (bears often leave claw barks on trees as a sign of their territory), and their scat.

If you find the campsite littered with remains of food or garbage from previous campers, then it is best to leave as soon as possible. Nothing attracts bears better than the sight and scent of food.

Instead, you should opt for a campsite that offers clear visibility and has tall, climbable trees close by. Most bear attacks occur in areas that are shady and hidden from the main trail. If you have to camp at a site covered with dense trees, make sure you make your presence known to the wildlife in the surrounding area by making plenty of noise.

Startling or sneaking up on them only increases your chances of getting attacked. Remember, most bear attacks occur because the animal feels scared and threatened. The fact is that they are simply defending themselves from us as much as we are from them.

Educate everyone in your group regarding how they should behave in the wild. Explain the rules and regulations for camping in a bear country.

During CampingHappy friends setting up their tent in the countryside-bear attack

While setting up your tent, make sure it’s large enough for your family and that there is space between the walls of the tent and its occupants. Bears tend to bite at anything that projects from the tent walls!

It is best to cook and eat at least 100 yards away from your tent, and in the direction away from the wind. Immediately clean up the sight where you cooked and ate. Dispose of any that food remains and place all garbage inside bear-proof trash cans. Clean the dishes and store them in an airtight bag along with all of the other utensils.

Cook only as much as you are likely to consume. If you must store food, put it in a plastic bag and hang it from a tree. If there are no tall trees around, store food in layers of several Ziploc bags and place it in a large cooler.

If your vehicle is with you at your campsite, you can also place the cooler in the trunk of your car. Just remember, bears have a keen sense of smell and if they suspect there is food nearby, chances are they will not rest until they find it. Preventing them from gaining ascent is the real key here.

Likewise, be sure to clean yourself after cooking and get a fresh change of clothes, as the smell of food lingering on your clothes can also attract bears. Either pack your dirty clothes in airtight plastic bags or hang them from trees, a few meters away from your tent.

Make sure you make a lot of noise to make bears aware of your presence. As they have poor eyesight, they largely depend upon sound and smell. So, talk, laugh, and clap at various intervals. While there is no harm in using bear-bells, a human voice is more likely to ward off a curious bear.

Always move in a group of 6 or more people while hiking, when possible. Lone hikers are more likely to attract bears, while a large group tends to scare them away. Besides, a large group is naturally noisy and loud.

When hiking, keep a canister of pepper spray in your pack or pocket. Practice the act of drawing it out and spraying its contents a few times (you never know when you’ll need it, and the last thing you need is a can to malfunction when you are only a few inches from a bear!).

Most importantly, be vigilant at all times and watch out for signs of any bears around. Know and be aware of your surroundings. If anything seems out of place or different, it may be a sign that a bear is in the area.

During a Possible Bear AttackLost man in the middle of the forest. Disoriented person in the fog-bear attack

So, what do you do if you find yourself in a close encounter with a bear, despite taking all of the above precautions? Should you run? Never! You will not be able to outrun a full-grown bear on any terrain, much less in its natural habitat.

So, the best option for you is to stay where you are and assess the situation. This should give you enough time to think, as the bear is doing the same exact thing.

First, remain calm and try to estimate the distance between you and the bear. If it is far enough away (say more than 100 Ft.), start backing away from its sight, without attracting too much attention towards yourself.

Chances are, the bear may not have even sensed your presence unless you made it obvious.

If the bear is looking directly at you and seems to charge in your direction, stay calm. More often than not, bears only bluff charge, just to scare you away. So, take this opportunity to get as far from the bear as possible without turning your back toward them.

If the bear is rather close and you have nowhere to go, locate a tall tree and start climbing as quickly as you can. Do not stop until you are well above 10 meters (around 30 Ft.) from the ground.

Remember, black bears are good climbers while grizzlies can chase you up to a few meters. Besides, they can reach a distance of 10 Ft. while they are still on the ground.

If the bear looks like he means business, try talking to him in a calm voice. Of course, he won’t understand you, but a human voice may make him believe that you are not a threat.

Wave your arms frantically to show him that you are a human and not a predator. You can also raise some sticks and bang them together. Looking as big as possible may deter the bear from wanting to engage with you.

If nothing works, pull out your bear spray and start spraying. However, spray only when the bear is less than a few feet away. This will startle and disorient the bear, thereby giving you enough time to escape.

Should you happen upon a stray cub, even though it may seem cute and harmless, please remember that there is most likely a mama bear nearby. You should never approach or attempt to feed a bear in the wild.

If you encounter a female with her cubs or a pack, your chances of winning a fight against them are pretty slim. In this case, play dead and pray! Assume a fetal position on the ground and cover your neck with your hands while lying as still as possible.

Actually, in the end, your chances of encountering a bear, especially an aggressive one, are very rare. Nonetheless, you must prepare yourself for every eventuality of a possible bear attack to ensure your vacation memories are bear-free.

While sighting a bear can certainly add an element of thrill and excitement to your trip, just be sure that if you see one that you enjoy it only from a very safe distance.

This Is A Moment In U.S. History That Will Forever Live In Infamy

There are certain moments that just make you want to cry.  The bombings in Kabul that killed 13 U.S. troops and at least 90 Afghans didn’t have to happen.  If we didn’t have completely and utterly incompetent political leaders and completely and utterly incompetent military leaders, things could have turned out very differently.  The end of a 20 year war is being capped off in humiliating fashion, and nobody is going to be afraid of the United States after this.  And that is actually a really bad thing, because fear of U.S. retribution has kept China, Russia, North Korea, Iran and a whole host of terror groups largely in check for the past several decades.  Now that the U.S. is seemingly unable to play the “restrainer” role any longer, the stage is set for tremendous global instability.

For years, our generals were telling us that the Taliban had been defeated.

Obviously, that wasn’t even close to the truth.

And ISIS had supposedly been bombed into oblivion, but apparently that wasn’t true either.

Everyone knew that having so many evacuees crammed into such a small area would be a really tempting target, and our leaders were depending on the Taliban (the guys we have been shooting at for 20 years) to protect us.

Needless to say, that was a recipe for disaster, and that is precisely what we got.

In the aftermath of the bombings, Joe Biden promised to hunt down those that had attacked us

Speaking to the American people in the wake of a devastating terror attack at the Kabul airport that left scores dead on Thursday — including numerous U.S. troops — President Biden promised the U.S. would strike back against those responsible.

“To those who carried out this attack, as well as anyone who wishes America harm, know this — we will not forgive, we will not forget, we will hunt you down and make you pay,” the president said in a somber White House address.

Yes, I am sure that they are shaking in their boots.

At this point, nobody is afraid of our “woke military” and the snowflake generals that are leading them.

The head of U.S. Central Command was asked if the Taliban allowed the ISIS terrorists to get close to the Marines, and “there’s a failure somewhere” was the best that he could come up with in response…

The commander of U.S. Central Command said Thursday he did not know if the Taliban — whose members the U.S. was relying on to screen individuals getting to the airport — let Islamic State suicide bombers get through and conduct at least two bombings that have so far killed 12 Marines and injured 15 more.

“Clearly if they were able to get up to the Marines…at the entry point of the base, there’s a failure somewhere,” said Marine Gen. Kenneth McKenzie at a press briefing on Thursday.

We know that more ISIS terrorists are lurking in the vicinity right now.

So will there be additional attacks in the days ahead?

One source told Fox News that it is “likely” that there will be more…

A source briefed on the situation in Kabul told Fox News that some Americans stranded in Afghanistan will likely be left behind after Thursday’s bombings.

The source told Fox News that “hundreds” of ISIS-K fighters remain in the vicinity of the Kabul airport and that the attacks are “likely to continue.”

Hearing that “some Americans stranded in Afghanistan will likely be left behind” should make your blood boil.

What in the world is wrong with our leaders?

Trump was impeached over a phone call.  How much more does Biden deserve to get impeached if he leaves Americans behind in the hands of the Taliban?

And what makes things even worse is the fact that the Biden administration has actually given the Taliban a list of Americans and others that needed to be evacuated…

U.S. officials in Kabul gave the Taliban a list of names of American citizens, green card holders and Afghan allies to grant entry into the militant-controlled outer perimeter of the city’s airport, a choice that’s prompted outrage behind the scenes from lawmakers and military officials.

The move, detailed to POLITICO by three U.S. and congressional officials, was designed to expedite the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from Afghanistan as chaos erupted in Afghanistan’s capital city last week after the Taliban seized control of the country. It also came as the Biden administration has been relying on the Taliban for security outside the airport.

Some are calling this a “kill list”, and that is exactly how the Taliban could choose to view it once all U.S. military forces are gone for good.

And thanks to our recklessness, Taliban fighters are going to be armed to the teeth as they begin their new reign…

A government watchdog group says the U.S. military is leaving behind 75,000 vehicles, 600,000 weapons and 208 aircraft in Afghanistan as forces evacuate the country after a 20-year war.

We’ve made the Taliban into a major U.S. arms dealer for the next decade,” said Adam Andrzejewski, CEO of Open the Books. “They now control 75,000 military vehicles. This is about 50,000 tactical vehicles, 20,000 Humvees they control about 1,000 mine-resistant vehicles, and even about 150 armored personnel carriers.”

To make matters worse, you and I paid for all of that equipment.

How can any of the brass at the Pentagon keep their jobs after such a debacle?

I just keep looking at those numbers and I keep wondering how our military leaders could possibly be so grossly incompetent.

And the rest of the world is watching.

If a ragged group of opium dealers and goat herders can absolutely humiliate the once mighty U.S. military, why should anyone else ever be afraid of us ever again?

What the Taliban has pulled off is going to greatly inspire terror organizations all over the globe, and it is going to embolden America’s most prominent enemies.

I think that the Biden administration was hoping that withdrawing from Afghanistan would be a move toward peace, but instead their incompetence has set the stage for more war.

As America is humiliated in Afghanistan, there have been lots of news stories about how China has been practicing for an invasion of Taiwan

China’s long-standing threats to invade Taiwan would require the biggest amphibious invasion in human history — and analysts say recent military activities, including exercises using commercial ferries, appear designed to practice exactly that.

If you think that global supply chains are messed up now, just wait until that happens.

I know that a lot of people are cheering the fact that things are becoming more unstable geopolitically, but this new period of instability will not end well.

For decades, the United States dealt with everyone else from a position of strength.

But now the rest of the world can see that the emperor doesn’t have any clothes, and a power vacuum will always be filled.

Biden’s Bad Week Just Got Worse: Supreme Court Blocks CDC’s Eviction Ban

This article was originally published by Tyler Durden at ZeroHedge.

Saying that it has not been a good week for President Biden may be the understatement of the year as along with the Supreme Court’s decision to force the administration to reinstate Trump’s ‘Remain in Mexico’ immigration policy, and the terrible situation still unfurling in Afghanistan, The US Supreme Court on Thursday lifted the temporary eviction ban, originally imposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for 120 days starting in March 2020, but repeatedly extended first by the Trump administration, then by the Biden administration (which was finally-finally-maybe set to expire on October 3, 2021).

“The Biden Administration is disappointed that the Supreme Court has blocked the most recent CDC eviction moratorium while confirmed cases of the Delta variant are significant across the country,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

“As a result of this ruling, families will face the painful impact of evictions, and communities across the country will face greater risk of exposure to COVID-19.”

As WolfStreet’s Wolf Richter writes below, the Court said in the unsigned opinion that the ban exceeded the CDC’s authority to combat communicable diseases and that it forced landlords to bear the costs of the pandemic.

The decision was expected (and went 6-3, along ideological lines).

Even President Biden had acknowledged that the CDC’s latest extension of the eviction ban was legally iffy but the litigation would give the government time to distribute $47 billion to make landlords whole and get tenants off the hook.

“The CDC has imposed a nationwide moratorium on evictions in reliance on a decades-old statute that authorizes it to implement measures like fumigation and pest extermination,” the Court wrote.

“It strains credulity to believe that this statute grants the CDC the sweeping authority that it asserts.”

The most important aspect of the national eviction moratorium is that it came of top of the extra $600 a week in federal unemployment benefits last year and an extra $300 a week this year, on top of the regular unemployment benefits. These extra unemployment benefits, on top of the regular state unemployment benefits, were specifically designed to give people enough money – in many cases more money than they had before – to pay rent and health insurance and other stuff.

The federal unemployment benefits also covered gig workers and workers that didn’t qualify for any other programs. Plus, there were the stimulus payments. There was money everywhere and anywhere. The whole thing was designed to allow people to spend money even if they lost their jobs.

Many people made more money under these programs than before, and it triggered a historic spike in retail sales. But with the eviction moratorium in place, people didn’t have to pay rent anymore, and could just spend on other stuff all this money they got to pay for rent.

And they did.

But wait… There’s another layer of money now.

The federal government has provided $47 billion in taxpayer money to states and local governments to make landlords whole and get tenants off the hook, now that they spent on cars, electronics, furniture, and other things all the money they got from the extra unemployment benefits designed precisely to allow them to pay their rent.

Governments have been slow to dole out this federal taxpayer money, $47 billion being quite a pile to give away willy-nilly. Rules have been eased to speed up the process. Landlords can now apply for a whole bunch of tenants at once. Etc.

The Court said in the case, brought by the Alabama Association of Realtors, that the CDC exceeded its authority with the eviction ban, but that Congress might have the power to impose it.

“The moratorium has put the applicants [the Alabama Association of Realtors], along with millions of landlords across the country, at risk of irreparable harm by depriving them of rent payments with no guarantee of eventual recovery,” the court said.

It pointed out that “many landlords have modest means. And preventing them from evicting tenants who breach their leases intrudes on one of the most fundamental elements of property ownership – the right to exclude.”

“This decision is the correct one, from both a legal standpoint and a matter of fairness,” NAR spokesperson Patrick Newton told the Daily Caller News Foundation on Thursday.

“It brings to an end an unlawful policy that places financial hardship solely on the shoulders of mom-and-pop housing providers, who provide nearly half of all rental housing in America, and it restores property rights in America.”

However, the mainstream narrative makes it easier to feel sorry for the plight of the tenants.

But those tenants already got paid the extra unemployment benefits from the federal government, on top of the state unemployment benefits, on top of the stimmies, so that they could pay their rents.

But the eviction bans allowed those tenants to buy other stuff with this money instead of paying their rents. And now the taxpayer is paying $47 billion to landlords to make them whole and to get the tenants off the hook, in an economy where no one has to pay for anything anymore.

But this is not the end of the eviction bans. They live on in several states, including New York and California, and in many municipalities.

The whole idea of the eviction bans was that consumers don’t have to pay their debts and other obligations, such as rents, with the money that they received from the government precisely to pay those debts and other obligations, and that they could use that money to buy other stuff. And now the government is paying a second time for the same thing, this time to make landlords whole, in an economy that has gone nuts.

Have The Social Media Companies Become Way Too Powerful?

Do you remember the early days of the Internet?  It was like “the wild west”, and that could be bad, but in many ways it was also very good.  The Internet was very decentralized at that time, and information could flow very freely.  For the very first time, ordinary people could communicate with others all over the globe on a massive scale, and I believe that was an incredibly positive development for humanity.  Unfortunately, the elite were absolutely horrified by this free flow of information and they became obsessed with restricting it.  Today, highly advanced algorithms have been designed to shape our behavior online.  We are increasingly being funneled to just a handful of immensely powerful corporate-owned websites, and information on those sites is heavily monitored, controlled and censored.

In particular, the largest “social media websites” have undergone a radical transformation over the past several years.  At one time, if you had something interesting to say it was fairly easy to get something to go viral.  But now the largest social media websites systematically suppress certain groups, viewpoints and belief systems.  If you are opposed to the dominant narratives that they are trying to push, it is going to be exceedingly difficult for you to get much traction online.

Of course if you get frustrated with the extreme levels of censorship, you could always seek out other social media sites where the censorship is lighter.

But the largest social media websites are where all the people are.  As far as total Internet traffic is concerned, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Reddit are all in the top 10.

I would consider Wikipedia to be a social media website too, and it is in the top 10 as well.

This gives the largest social media companies an extraordinary amount of influence over how people view the world, and one recent survey found that the vast majority of Americans believe that they have too much power…

While most Republicans and Democrats believe social media companies wield too much power, Republicans are more likely to hold this view, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

A whopping 82 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents think social media companies have too much power and influence in politics, compared with 63 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, the survey said.

But even though we believe that they have too much power, we just keep going back.

In fact, most of us are deeply addicted.

One recent poll discovered that 73 percent of British adults “can’t even imagine going a full 24 hours without at least one screen to stare at”…

From computers and tablets to smartphones and TV sets, nowadays most people’s days consist of staring at one screen and then moving on to the next. As such, a recent poll of 2,000 British adults reports a whopping 73 percent can’t even imagine going a full 24 hours without at least one screen to stare at.

What about you?

Could you go a full day without the Internet?

The same poll found that adults are spending approximately six hours a day “in front of screens”

How glued are we to our devices exactly? On average, researchers report adults spend about six hours daily in front of screens.

We are only awake for about 16 hours a day.

Needless to say, if you allow anyone to pump six hours of “programming” into your mind each day, it is going to radically alter how you view the world.

In addition to frying our minds, being addicted to the Internet can also have physical consequences.  For example, a different study found a direct link between Internet addiction and sleep problems in young people…

More evidence suggests the severity of internet addiction (IA) is directly related to the severity of sleep problems in youth.

Results from a study of more than 4000 adolescent students show IA severity was linked to less sleep and to daytime sleepiness. In addition, boys aged 12-14 years who were addicted to computer games vs social media networking were the most affected.

Experts have found that the Internet can even make you sick.  Medical professionals are telling us that some people can actually develop “cybersickness” if they use the Internet too much…

Cybersickness refers to a cluster of symptoms that occur in the absence of physical motion, similar to motion sickness. These symptoms fall into three categories: nausea, oculomotor issues and general disorientation. Oculomotor symptoms, like eye strain, fatigue and headaches, involve overworking the nerve that controls eye movement. Disorientation can manifest as dizziness and vertigo. And several cybersickness symptoms, such as difficulty concentrating and blurred vision, overlap categories. These issues can persist for hours and affect sleep quality.

So it is important to be careful.

As with so many other things in life, moderation is the key.

Without a doubt, there is still so much about the Internet that is very positive.  Personally, I have been using it to relentlessly share the truth for more than a decade.  The Internet has allowed me to touch millions upon millions of people all over the globe, and I am always encouraged when readers email me from the other side of the planet.

We should always remember that the Internet is simply a tool.

It can be used for great good, but it can also be used for great evil.

And right now, the elite are ruthlessly clamping down on free speech so that they can impose their “values” on everyone else.

They say that they are protecting us by restricting the flow of “disinformation”, but way too often they are the ones that are spreading “disinformation”.

For example, Joe Biden was accused of spreading disinformation about the COVID pandemic during his recent town hall on CNN.

Newsweek looked into that claim, and they rated it to be true…

True. Joe Biden spread misinformation about COVID vaccines at a CNN town hall on Wednesday.

It is not true that people vaccinated against COVID will not get the disease, be hospitalized, end up in an ICU, or die because of it.

So does this mean that we should censor Joe Biden’s speech and ban him from all social media platforms?

No.

I believe that everyone should be allowed to speak, because that is what our founders would have wanted.

Unfortunately, freedom of speech on the Internet is nearly dead, and with each passing day there are even more calls for stricter censorship.

These are very dark days, and they are getting darker all the time.
