Survival Gear Review – Streamlight ProTac HL-X

I remember the first “tactical” flashlight I bought. It was a flat dark earth Surefire G2 Nitrolon. Everyone I showed the flashlight to was amazed by how bright it was.  Before that, I had never even heard of “lumens.” Until then, the only flashlights we had around were huge D-cell Maglites or those 6-volt monstrosities the size of a tub of ice cream. Flashlights sure have come a long way in my lifetime.

By J. Bridger, Contributing Author to Survival Cache and SHTFblog.com

I’m not a huge fan of bolting things onto rifles, but a white LED light is definitely an exception. Finding a quality weapon light isn’t difficult; finding a quality weapon light that won’t break the bank is another story. If you’ve lusted after the multi-hundred dollar Surefire M600 Scout light but lack the Benjamins, you absolutely need to take a look at the $106 Streamlight ProTac HL-X.

My love affair with Streamlight began during my time at the fire department. We used the right angle Streamlight Survivor lights, and they kicked ass. The Survivors worked wet, they worked in freezing temperatures, they worked in 100°F+ temperatures, and they worked in the burn trailer the University would bring down. That burn trailer used propane-fueled fires for interior training and generated temps over 900°F . It gets hot. The Survivor lights took 6 AAs which only needed to be replaced every six months or so, if I remember correctly. They were very bright. I could illuminate the top of the grain elevator and count the buzzards at night from the bay doors, 100 yards down the block. Suffice it to say, I am a fan of Streamlight products! When I saw the ProTac HL-X, I had to have one for my rifle. From what I’ve seen so far, the quality is just as good as the tried and true Survivor lights.

What’s in the Box?

The ProTac HL-X is about 5.5” long, weighs 6.4 oz, and has a single picatinny mount for MIL-STD-1913 rails. The ProTac HL-X’s body is machined from aluminum and comes with two tail caps: One cap with a pressure switch, the other with a standard tailcap button. The kit comes with a pressure pad, a couple zip ties, snap on pressure pad retaining clips, Alan wrench, two screws, and an adhesive pad. The light is water resistant, but only for thirty minutes. Rain won’t hurt this light, but I wouldn’t swim with it. It does take up a good chunk of rail space. It can accept two CR123s or one 18650 battery. On high output, the Streamlight ProTac HL-X will run for 1.25 hrs, and on low, 23 hours.

Streamlight uses the HL designation to mean “High Lumen.” These throw a wide beam pattern, increasing your situational awareness. Tip: If you want to see less of what’s around you and more of what’s downrange, try their HPL series lights. The ProTac HL-X is 1,000 lumens (27,600 Candela), and Streamlight reports it can throw a beam 332 meters. 1,000 lumens is a lot of output, and in my experience, really is too much for indoor use. I think this Streamlight really shines as an outdoor light (pun intended).

One of the things I love about this light is the TEN-TAP programming. I like my EDC lights to have a high and low setting, but I think a WML should have just one setting: brighter than shit. I’m not a big fan of low, “SOS,” or strobes, so I really appreciate being able to get rid of those. There are 3 available programs: High-strobe, High, and Low-High. To cycle through the available programs, tap the button 9 times in quick succession and hold it on the tenth time. Voila. You can do this with the tail cap or the pressure switch.

Real-World Trials With The Streamlight Protac HL-X

I tried the ProTac HL-X out on a snowy morning before the sun came up to see how far it’d throw a beam. At 25 yards, this light is positively blinding. Same at 50 yards. At 100 yards, you would still have zero problem identifying your target. At 200 yards, you would be able to see what you’re looking at, but I think this is where it starts to get dicey. You may be able to see a person at this distance, but are your eyes good enough to make out their intentions at night? Or can you tell a dog from a coyote? You may need a magnified optic, but it certainly will throw light that far. I use a 50/200 zero on my AR, so this is just about perfect for me.

Related: Survival Gear Review: Streamlight TLR-3

The light adds a little weight to the front of the gun, but it’s barely noticeable. A 3 o’clock mount isn’t my favorite spot, but I like it better than 6 o’clock. At 6 o’clock the shadow it casts from my suppressor covers up the 12 o’clock position on a target. What the hands are doing is probably more important than faces, but I’d still like to be able to ID someone if I had to.

I can’t speak for any other calibers these crazy kids are shooting these days, but 5.56 NATO recoil doesn’t bother the Streamlight ProTac HL-X at all. It never flickered or malfunctioned, even being in close proximity to the muzzle of my LWRC. I’m not surprised; this isn’t my first WML from Streamlight. (I also have a TLR-1 HL mounted on a Glock 19, and is a hell of a light! ) As I said before, on full power, this light may be too bright for indoor use. There is definitely some technique involved in using a light “tactically” to avoid blinding yourself, especially if you’ve just woken up. I can say from experience, its perfect for “in the yard” distance engagements with coyotes and skunks. For the casual shooter on a budget or a professional in need of a solid high-performance weapon mounted light, you can install the Streamlight Protac HL-X light and not think twice. You can rest assured it will turn on when you need it.

Tracking, a Valuable Skill for Preppers

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of articles by guest author Kyt Lyn Walken on tracking and its applicability to prepping. — Wild Bill

Tracking. Maybe you heard about it from your grandfather or father during hunting season. Or you noticed it in some scenes from The Walking Dead series. Perhaps you’re a fan of Westerns and are familiar with Indian scouts bent to the ground, analyzing the terrain to gather information.

“Learning to read signs enables everyone to choose a safe route in life, staying safe and avoiding danger.”

John “Lofty” Wiseman, author of “SAS Survival Handbook”

Tracking is the art and science of identifying, following and interpreting human and animal tracks and signs. Basically, it’s about studying and comprehending the reaction of each type of surface to the passage of men and animals.

Primitive art, modern skill

This primitive art, founded on a process which involves both observation and deduction, is still alive. In times of crises and catastrophes, tracking takes on a special value. Tracking has been (and continues to be) successfully employed in search and rescue, law enforcement, border operations, and forensic science. But tracking can be applied to civilian life, too.

“Learning to read signs enables everyone to choose a safe route in life, staying safe and avoiding danger.” This quote, from John “Lofty” Wiseman (former Special Air Service) seems to fit perfectly, even in 2020. A tracker is not necessarily a fan of old times, but rather lives in the present, putting situational awareness above all. Through the use of this art, a tracker is able to collect information and have a clear picture in mind.

Tracking isn’t a topic you can learn in one or two days but, once acquired, it will serve you faithfully all your life. And in emergency situation, it might even save your life.

You cannot read one book, add ego, stir in some ignorance, and come up with a tracker.

A.B. Taylor

Observation means selection. If you know where to look and what to look for, you will become proficient in getting all the details you need to understand if anyone has come onto your property, as an example.

During hunting season, you will have a better chance of successfully tracking your prey. If you find yourself lost in the middle of a hike and your GPS batteries are dead, tracking can help you follow your own footprints and safely return to your car.

These are but a few examples. However, learning this art requires time, patience, passion and dedication. AB Taylor, a well-known tracker and former Border Patrol Agent, used to say: “You cannot read one book, add ego, stir in some ignorance, and come up with a tracker. No, this sounds more like the ingredients of an incident commander to me.”

Practice makes perfect

This is absolutely true. If you miss out, you mess up. That’s my personal consideration of it. The best teacher of learning how to read and follow tracks is experience, there is no other way around it. Practice, especially side-by-side with an expert tracker and in all kinds of weather conditions, will help you to gain more confidence in what you do.

Kyt Walken points out some sign

You may be surprised by how you will become even more selective and inquisitive in your everyday life. The tracker is, tout court, a detective. In a worst-case scenario, the new inclination of your modus operandi will play a big difference, not only in reading tracks, but also in understanding the personality of people, their habits, and learning to foretell their actions.

In upcoming articles we will look at the effective application of this art as applied to preparedness.

Hezbollah To Be Unleashed Inside America? We Are Being Warned That Sleeper Cells “Can Hit Targets On U.S. Soil At Anytime Without Warning”

There has never been a greater threat of terror attacks on U.S. soil than there is right now.  In the aftermath of the killing of Iranian military chief Qassem Soleimani, top Iranian leaders are vowing revenge.  Many of the talking heads on television are speculating that Iran may hit American targets in the Middle East, but what they are forgetting is that Iranian-backed terror groups already have a substantial presence in North America.  In particular, Hezbollah has been involved in the North American drug trade for a very long time.  Over the years, the mainstream media gave Al-Qaeda and ISIS a lot of attention, but the truth is that Hezbollah is far better funded and far better armed than either of those groups ever were, and now the man at the top of the military food chain that gave Hezbollah their marching orders has been killed by the United States.  If Hezbollah sleeper cells are ever going to be unleashed in the United States, now is the time when it will happen.

Of course U.S. officials clearly understand that there is a threat.  As Paul Joseph Watson has noted, authorities in New York and Los Angeles are both ramping up security…

The threat posed by Iran-backed Hezbollah sleeper cells embedded in major American cities has once again come to the fore following the killing of Iran’s Quds Force General Qasem Soleimani.

Following last night’s assassination of the Iranian military leader, authorities in both New York and Los Angeles announced that they were ramping up security in readiness for possible revenge attacks on U.S. soil.

This is because Iran is known to have placed Hezbollah terrorist sleeper cells throughout not just Europe but the United States too.

And one former CIA officer is warning that we need to be operating under the assumption that Hezbollah sleeper cells “can hit targets on U.S. soil at anytime without warning”

Former CIA operations officer, Sam Faddis, warned that Hezbollah sleeper cells were hiding in the U.S. and potentially had targets in its sights.

‘It is more than possible that Hezbollah has sleeper cells in the United States ready to strike,’ Faddis told DailyMail.com.

‘Based on what we know we must assume they do and that they can hit targets on U.S. soil at anytime without warning.’

Up until now, Iranian leaders such as Soleimani have always held back their proxies from committing terror attacks on U.S. soil because the Iranians knew that it would potentially spark a full-blown war with the United States.

But now that Soleimani is dead and war is virtually a certainty, there would appear to be no reason to hold back any longer.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio rarely makes any sense at all, but for once I have to agree with him.  During a press conference on Friday, he told reporters that we are “in a de facto state of war”

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said they would be protecting key locations from ‘any attempt by Iran or its terrorist allies to retaliate against the U.S.’

‘We have to assume this action puts us in a de facto state of war,’ he told a press conference on Friday.

It comes amid fears that the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group, which has been designated by the U.S. government as a foreign terrorist organization, may have sleeper cells in the U.S. that are ready to retaliate.

And he is right.

In particular, the Iranians and their proxies are going to be looking for high value targets to strike, and there are certainly a lot of them in New York.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that something will happen there, but it is definitely a possibility.

And we do know that Hezbollah has previously “plotted to attack U.S. interests inside the country”

Last year, the criminal prosecution and conviction in New York of the Hezbollah operative Ali Kourani revealed that the terror outfit has already plotted to attack U.S. interests inside the country and is ready to activate if it considers the existence of either Hezbollah or Iran to be at stake.

Following the arrest of Kourani and another Hezbollah operative named Samer el-Debek, the U.S. intelligence community reversed its belief that Hezbollah was unlikely to attempt attacks within the U.S.

“It’s our assessment that Hezbollah is determined to give itself a potential homeland option as a critical component of its terrorism playbook,” said National Counterterrorism Center Director Nicholas Rasmussen.

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans don’t understand the seriousness of what we are potentially facing.

Hezbollah is made up of the most radical Shiite terrorists on the entire planet.

These are the guys that ISIS and Al-Qaeda are afraid of.

Of all the terror groups in existence, Hezbollah is the most competent and the most frightening of them all.

In addition to terror attacks, it is being reported that the Trump administration is also deeply concerned about the possibility of cyberattacks.

The Iranians and their proxies are probably not as advanced in this area as Russia, China and North Korea are, but we do know that they have been building up a “cyber army”

Analysts believe Tehran has stepped up its capacity to attack key Western cyber infrastructure and has even built up a so-called “cyber army” that pledges allegiance to the Islamic Republic.

Loic Guezo, head of French information security group Clusif, said Iran’s cyber attacks above all sought to damage industrial targets such as dams or power stations.

“What is feared here is the impact on society — electricity cuts, poisoning, gas leaks, explosions, transport chaos and hospitals,” he told AFP.

So at some point your power may go out, and you may not even realize that the Iranians are behind it.

If and when the Iranians and their proxies start hitting us, it is going to cause a lot of panic.  America is totally unprepared for what is coming, and our enemies are going to take full advantage of that fact.

The Iranians and their proxies don’t fight clean and their don’t fight fair.

Getting into a fight with them won’t be pretty, and when it erupts a whole lot of people are likely to end up dead.

How To Build A Root Cellar From The Ground Up For Survival

How To Build A Root CellarFiguring out how to build a root cellar is not a new trick.

In fact, it’s an ancient one.

It’s one of the oldest survival tricks in the book.

But is utilizing the earth for refrigeration still necessary?

In America, there’s an appliance called a refrigerator, duh!?

Our $3,000 stainless refrigerators and chest freezers take care of ALL our food preservation needs, right?

Plus, we have an overabundance of reliable power to run those things forever, everyone knows that.

No one needs to (or cares to) store their food underground anymore, right?

WRONG.

I care and you should too.

So today we’re going to cover the following “How To Build A Root Cellar” topics in detail:

WHY ROOT CELLARS STILL MATTER

When humans discovered they could increase the shelf life of their food by storing it underground; society was revolutionized.

All of a sudden, humans had the ability to preserve grain, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables for longer periods of time.

Now immediate food consumption was no longer necessary; having to gorge on it all before it went bad.

Instead, we could now stockpile and preserve our harvests in root cellars to prepare for the lean winter months.

It’s the technology that frontier families used to maintain a healthy diet and avoid starvation during harsh cold winters.

But wait, don’t refrigerators do that nowadays? Yes, but with one big difference – refrigerators depend on electricity.

This makes refrigerators very convenient – until you lose power.

So convenient in fact, that our society has all but lost this old technology, knowledge, and know-how.

Which is a damn shame because there are so many reasons why a backup supply of healthy food is extremely useful – even, dare I say, life-saving.

Be it a massive wildfire, contagious disease, worldwide financial collapse, or an EMP strike.

If any of these horrible events are bad enough, and last long enough, having a backup food preservation system may evolve from a fun hobby to a survival necessity.

And while having a backyard root cellar is not a guarantee of survival success, not have one may lead to your starvation.

This ancient survival technique may separate those who thrive from those who perish in a “shit-hits-the-fan” scenario.

So a root cellar is an excellent off-grid food preservation system. It’s pretty much a requirement for anyone who’s concerned about losing grid power for good…

If you’re serious about being prepared for anything, you need to add a root cellar to your lifestyle.

But building a root cellar is not a quick project and one you shouldn’t rush.

You need to take your time for proper planning. Because if you don’t, chances are good that you’ll make mistakes. And food storage mistakes can jeopardize all of your food stockpiling efforts.

HOW UNDERGROUND FOOD STORAGE WORKS

Root cellars ALL have one thing in common. They take advantage of stable underground temperatures! Why underground? It all has to do with the seasonal variation in temperatures.

>As you dig down into the earth, the layers of soil between you and the surface act as a blanket.  insulator from the surface.

For example, in the hot summer, underground temps are much cooler than the surface.

In the winter, a few feet underground is much warmer than a howling blizzard outside.
And you don’t need to dig far to get the benefits…

In fact, most U.S. regions, at just 10 feet under the surface, you’ll find constantly cool 50-60 degree, soil temps.

US-ground-temps

Approximate Soil Temps At 10 Feet Underground

>A root cellar takes advantage of these stable cool temperatures.
And temperature control is an important component in prolonging the shelf life of perishable foods.

Because we all know that cool temperatures extend our perishable food’s shelf life.

For proof of this, just leave your milk out on the counter all afternoon in the summer. Near-instant spoilage, while that same milk will last weeks in a cool refrigerator.

A root cellar is a nature’s refrigerator. Without the need for chemical refrigerants or electricity.

And that’s the simple beauty of underground food storage, it extends your foods shelf life without depending on modern technologies.

But, there’s a bit more to it than that…

Using the earth’s lower temperatures is smart, but there are unique challenges you’ll need to overcome to do so successfully.

2 MAIN TYPES OF DIY ROOT CELLARS

Depending on your time, energy, and funds, there are two main types of root cellars to choose from: small and large.

Small underground food storage systems primarily consist of buried containers, while larger setups typically include a separate building.

So let’s start with the quick, down, and dirty option first; the small buried root cellar container.

The Small Buried Root Cellar Container

This option is similar to burying a survival cache.

But instead of storing gear and equipment, with this option, your focusing on storing food.

Remember, anything stored underground at a depth of several feet will stay at a consistently cool temperature between 50-55-degrees F (regionally dependent).

The best containers for this method are the ones not susceptible to water damage or degradation.

Naturally, that eliminates wood crates or cardboard boxes because, over the course of time, natural processes will eat away at these containers and eventually devour whatever’s inside.

Instead, use metal garbage cans, plastic drums or plastic storage totes are the best options.

Just make sure the container is made out of strong materials to prevent collapse and won’t degrade when in contact with moisture for extended periods of time.

This straightforward method of underground food storage is the easiest on a tight budget. It’s also the quickest to achieve, and acquiring materials is not difficult.

It’s also the closest method to the original root cellar!

When Indians and native Australians buried their foods, they did so in clay pots but they surely would have used waterproof plastic containers if available. But for them, plastic was still centuries away.

Note: if you live in freezing climates, expect your buried food container to be inaccessible during the cold months. When the ground freezes, it becomes difficult or nearly impossible to dig it back up.

Also, extremely low temperatures present a liability for sealed containers; anything stored in a jar, can, or bottle will likely freeze and burst its container. Food for thought!

Here are 2 small root cellar container videos. The first is utilizing large plastic drum barrels while the second one repurposes a broken refrigerator.

The limitations to these smaller containers become obvious once you want to expand your underground food storage supply.

Plus, digging them back up on a regular basis to check on your food and rotate your foods are (more details later) it’s going to be a royal pain.

So if you want a single large root cellar as opposed to lots of smaller ones, you need a larger walk-in backyard root cellar.

One you can fill to the brim with food and wait for the worst.

The Backyard DIY Root Cellar

A walk-in style root cellar is a step up from buried caches. But they do require a bit more time and money.

Here’s a quick overview of how to build a root cellar and how it should function once complete.

Easy Cellar

Note: One of the most affordable backyard root cellar systems I’ve come across is called Easy Cellar.

It’s a backyard root cellar design you can build for only $400!

The good news is constructing a backyard root cellar is the kind of project that supports you during a large-scale disaster.

Because if having a couple of barrels full of buried food is good; having a large room full of survival food is even better.

Underground Root Cellar Schematic 1

HOW TO BUILD A ROOT CELLAR /  DIY ROOT CELLAR PLANS

How to Build A Root Cellar

With so many kinds of root cellars, there are plenty of great instructional videos online. We spent time reviewing them to find the best to give you an idea of how to get started.

It’s worth checking out how to build several different kinds. Then take the best ideas to fit your particular situation.

Remember, there are no absolutes in the design of a root cellar. Feel free to mix and match styles, sizes, and construction techniques. That’s the best way to end up the perfect DIY root cellar for YOU!

With that said, let’s go for the gold medal right off the bat! This “hobbit hole” root cellar is a work of art. This video shows off some of the craftsmanship that went into building it.

In particular, I like the vaulted ceiling and the detail work in the door and door frame. Not only will it store a huge amount of food, but it also looks great nestled into the landscape at the edge of your yard.

O.K., perhaps the hobbit hole is a little too decorative for you. Check out this “earthbag” construction method instead.

It can produce a similar result with a much more utilitarian design. Plus, aside from the excavation, earthbags don’t require as much specialized knowledge to build. It’s not a skilled trade like masonry or bricklaying.

With no fancy arches and a straightforward log roof, this is all pure function.

Of course, not everyone has the space (or the need) for such a large root cellar. In fact, an array of smaller root cellars can keep your produce separated. This also helps reduce the risk that one event can take out your entire supply.

Imagine having a few of these simple garbage can root cellars on your property. They can also act as secret food caches and make sense around a bug out location!

Finally, if you have an unheated basement with plenty of space, you can always build an indoor root cellar. This is often the most convenient option out there since you don’t have to go outside to get your produce!

This root cellar building project is extremely well documented. They take you from measuring for rough lumber to building walls. They even go over insulating and installing ventilation.

Remember, you can tweak the details of any of the designs to fit your specific needs.

Such as, how many people do you need to supply? Which types of products you’re most likely to use? How much total volume you need for storage, and your build costs and DIY skills?

Get a realistic picture of the interaction between all these variables. This can help narrow down the best root cellar design for you.

In order to successfully build a root cellar, you must start with the end in mind. You can’t just grab a shovel and start digging.

Well..actually you can, but trust me, you’ll soon regret that approach. Instead, you’ll meet all your goals and get what you want with the right root cellar plan!

Here are the following root cellar issues you need to think long and hard about before breaking ground.

Consider Your Budget

Obviously, the size of your wallet is going to play a significant factor in determining the size and quality of your food storage cellar.

If you have the means to go “all-out” on this project, then go for it. Purchase the best materials, build it on your own land, and make it as big as possible.

What better way to spend your money, than on important survival projects?

But, if you are like me and severely confined by your bank account, then you’ll have to make compromises.

So I’ll do my best to suggest some cheaper alternatives. Some corners are cut-able, while others are not. Keep this in mind as we move forward.

Digging The Hole – Excavation

Underground storage is, by definition, buried in the ground.

So the first step to building your big survival pantry is digging a hole for it. This hole can be underneath your house, in your backyard, out in the woods, or even in a secret spot in the middle of the desert.

But wherever it ultimately ends up, follow this advice: the deeper the better.

Not only are deeply dug root cellars easier to conceal, but they provide cooler food storage temperatures.

So decide how large an area you want and start digging!

Use a shovel if you must, but ideally, an excavating machine will do the heavy lifting, but again, your budget will determine what’s possible.

Laying The Foundation

If you have the money to pour a concrete floor, DO IT! Otherwise, use the flattest stones you can find in the surrounding area.

One rock at a time and you’ll eventually have a rustic looking floor.

Wooden boards can also be used to achieve the same effect.

The reason why you want a solid floor is twofold: first, having a solid floor helps prevent rodents from burrowing through the floor, and second, it makes a smooth surface to set up racking or shelving systems.

Building The Root Cellar Walls

Once again, if you can afford bricks or masonry blocks for walls then you should use them.

Otherwise, similar to the foundation of your cellar, look for the materials for your walls in free resources in the surrounding area.

Stacking stones is a straightforward task (although it often requires some heavy lifting).

You can use mud or clay as a natural mortar to hold each stone in place.

Having strong stone walls prevents unwanted pests from gaining entry to your food storage facility, and it also helps keep the place as cool as possible.

Adding A Ventilation Pipe

All root cellars require ventilation, no exceptions.

You must turn over the air within the room to keep ethylene gas buildup in check. The good news is this is relatively straightforward.

Just add a vertical PVC pipe to somewhere within the structure that will stick out above the roof. Then add a second pipe near the floor that will draw fresh outside air into the storage space.

Capping The Ceiling / Laying The Roof

The best way to cap your root cellar is to pour a concrete slab over the top. You’ll need to support the roof fully from underneath before you pour.

However, pouring concrete will set you back some dollars. An alternative option is to lay treated 2×4’s across the top of your cellar, and then bury them under the dirt you dug out of the hole in step 1.

Of course, using materials that won’t degrade as fast as wood is preferable, but will undoubtedly cost more. If you go with the 2×4’s make sure you used treated lumber as it will hold up to rot much longer.

Just know it’s definitely a shortcut, but it’s simple, cheap, and effective at camouflaging your underground food structure.

Sealing Up Your Root Cellar

Make sure you fill and seal all doors jams and ceiling gaps. Gaps allow bugs, insects, and vermin into your food storage space. Not good.

Installing Doors and Locks

The reasons for these are obvious. You need to be able to close and lock the place up when you’re not around.

So invest in a quality Rustoleum hanging lock to keep your food stockpile yours.

So now it’s time to begin the actual building of your own DIY root cellar. But having a set of proven root cellar blueprints are going to make your life a lot easier.

That’s why we recommend you check out The Easy Cellar plan. It’s the easiest backyard root cellar build we’ve come across.

Sure it’s a bit of an investment – but you’ll save a bundle with the right set of DIY root cellar plans. Why? By preventing you from making costly mistakes!

EasyCellar2

WHAT YOUT SHOULD STORE IN YOUR ROOT CELLAR

What you store in your cellar depends on your goals.

If your goal is to stash long-term survival foods, then build a cellar large enough to handle what you have today and what you may want to add to it over the years.

But what about fresh produce and vegetables from the garden? You should also make certain to design enough room for these seasonal items as well.

Non-perishables Are Your Friend

Whether it is canned, jarred, dehydrated, dried, or tubed, you’re good to go. The further away from the expiration date, the better.

You should learn how to making pemmican for long-term protein needs and how to make hardtack for your long-term carbs needs.

The more foods that are non-perishable that you can afford to store in your cellar, the better off you will be for any future emergencies (big or small).

Add Some Fresh Stuff Too

You can store fresh produce if you’re willing to regularly maintain them. You’ll need to understand the humidity and temperature level and you’ll need to consume the produce each year before the next crop gets stored.

There’s a particular technique for storing these kinds of foods, because of the chemical byproducts they release.

Here’s a helpful chart that provides ideal root cellar storage temperature and humidity levels for various varieties of produce.

I think it’s safe to assume if you’re interested in underground food storage, then you’re interested in self-reliance. Preserving your food harvests all winter long without electricity is about as self-reliant as it gets.

But there’s a conflict of interest between long-term survival food kits and fresh fruits and veggies. Any guess on what the conflict is?

It’s humidity. Moisture in the air.

With long-term dry survival foods, the last thing you want is humidity in the air. You should do everything possible to avoid moisture touching your freeze-dried survival food. Even going so far as to add a high-quality dehumidifier to your food storage area.

But with harvested fruits and vegetables you’re trying to keep fresh through a single winter season, you want the opposite. You want a relatively high humidity (as much as 90%).

This high humidity keeps your produce from drying out. Helping to keep your stashed harvest both fresh and nutritious.

As we discussed in the previous section, all foods last longer in cooler temps. So the cool air of underground food storage is ideal for both survival food and garden produce. So what’s a self-reliant person to do?

The way I see it you have a couple of options.

Option 1 – Don’t Store Your Freeze Dried or Dehydrated Survival Food In Your Root Cellar

Whether you bought it or used a freeze-drying machine; freeze-dried food is not cheap. That’s why you might not want to store it in your underground food storage system. Instead, only store your annually harvested produce there.

That way, you can crank up your humidity levels without fear of affecting your freeze-dried survival foods. But you’ll have to find a separate location for your long-term survival foods like your basement.

Option 2 – Create Separate Areas Within Your Root Cellar

Create separate containers or areas within your root cellars specifically designed for high or low humidity environments.

This eliminates having two separate storage locations but complicates the constructing and storing process. Especially, for a single large underground food storage building.

Option 3 – Use Mylar Bags For Your Survival Food

Put your survival food in sealed Mylar bags with desiccants and then put these bags into food-grade sealed buckets.

This double seal setup should keep the rooms high humidity environment from ever touching your long-term survival foods.

I think Option 3 is the best, but ultimately it’s up to you.

How To Control The Humidity

First of all, relatively high humidity is essential in root cellar storage.

A refrigerator produce bin holds the humidity somewhere between 90 and 95 percent. This high humidity is ideal for leafy greens and root crops. This prevents these foods from drying out and wilting.

Now underground soil temps in your area; are what they are. So there’s no way to control that.

But you can control the humidity levels using ventilation and adding moisture as needed.

If you have good ventilation and airflow you can keep the humidity of a room relatively stable. Ventilation controls the flow of air and thereby the humidity of the room.

Now regardless of whether you want high humidity (for produce) or low humidity (for long-term dried foods and meats) your storage system must have ventilation.

Without ventilation, a room with fresh produce will fill up with a gas called Ethylene. Ethylene is released naturally from stored produce and without ventilation, it will build up and accelerate the spoilage process.

So the best way to control humidity in a root cellar is by installing ventilation, and then adding moisture as needed.

One way to add moisture is to plan the root cellar floor with gravel instead of a full concrete pad. This allows you to take a hose or buckets of water and dump them on the floor.

Another way is by spreading damp burlap sacks over the produce.

Either way, the additional water will slowly evaporate up into the air. This evaporation process adds humidity.

However, I highly recommend using a hygrometer to ensure that it doesn’t become TOO humid.

Why? If the humidity approaches 100% and the temps fall, moisture will start condensing. Wet produce is far more susceptible to spoiling.

So there you go. You install a simple PVC vent pipe to create ventilation and then bring in water for adding humidity.

The PVC vent system consists of two PVC pipes. One installed close to the floor and goes through the wall to the outside while the other one is installed near the top of the cellar and exits through the roof.

The natural chimney effect will pull air out of the room from the roof pipe and the floor pipe will bring fresh air in. Simple ventilation without electricity.

So now that you have a basic understanding of the concepts of a root cellar, and hopefully have an idea of how you want to utilize yours, it’s time to start thinking about construction.

DESIGNING THE INTERIOR SPACE OF A ROOT CELLAR

An efficient and usable space requires a fair amount of forethought.

You can’t just toss your food supplies in a haphazard heap and expect good outcomes. Believe it or not, there is actually a science to packing your underground food storage.

First up is deciding how to keep everything organized. Are you going to use boxes, plastic tubs or shelves?

Honestly, it doesn’t matter as long as you’re using separation to organize your underground food supply. Let’s discuss each option further.

Food Shelving Racks

These are easy to build and fully maximize your available space. You can get premade shelving kits online. Just buy and assemble.

Or you can buy the raw materials and build them yourself. The biggest benefit of building them yourself is being able to customize them to fit your space perfectly.

Food Boxes and Tubs

Storing your food on the shelf is a good first step, but organizing them get’s a lot easier when you use boxes or tubs.

I like to use clear plastic bins so I can see the food and produce that’s in them without having to empty it.

Under no circumstance use cardboard due to humidity breaking down the paper.

Note: make sure you don’t seal up your fresh produce bins. You can put veggies in boxes, bins or tubs, just don’t put a lid on it.

Otherwise, the ethylene gas will get trapped.

ROOT CELLAR FOOD ORGANIZATION ADVICE

This step is one that is often overlooked but is paramount to extending the life of your underground food storage cellar. Keeping everything elevated (on shelves or supports or pallets) to prevent any unwanted water damage.

But beyond this, it’s really important to keep the fruits and veggies stored in specific places.

Fresh fruits and vegetables (especially tomatoes, apples, and pears) produce that ripening agent we talked about called ethylene.

This chemical byproduct speeds up the decomposition of other produce. Basically, it makes everything fresh start to rot faster, and it’s a major problem that can result in a lot of food waste.

The easiest way to mitigate this issue (besides avoiding storing fresh produce to start with) is to:

  1. Keep the foods that produce ethylene at the very top of the cellar. The higher the better. This will help prevent the chemical agent from infecting your other foods.
  2. Have a good ventilation system as we discussed earlier.

Also, some produce stores better when it is cured at 80-90-degree F temperatures for around 10 days before being placed in storage.

A few examples of these foods are garlic, winter squash, onions, and potatoes. If you plan to store these consider taking the time to cure it before adding it to your underground root cellar.

Food items require colder temperatures should be stored at the bottom of your cellar.

Amazingly, there will be a significant temperature difference between the top of your cellar and the bottom. Often a big enough difference to keep food cold when it is stored flat on the ground.

Any canned items or jars with metal lids are in danger of rusting. Even if you monitor the temp/humidity very carefully, rusted cans are bad news.

Rust can compromise the seal on lids and thereby compromise the food inside. To prevent this, store all-metal containers in sealed plastic mylar bags (vacuum seals are ideal).

5 DANGEROUS ROOT CELLAR ENEMIES

Every survival project has its own unique obstacles. And when it comes to storing food underground in root cellars there are 5 such challenges.

You must prepare to deal with these obstacles before putting your root cellar food storage system to the ultimate test.

1 – Bacteria

Actually, some bacteria are good for you, like the stuff found in probiotic yogurts. But when storing your food underground bacteria is always the bad sort.

If you allow any bacteria to fester in your root cellar stockpile it will introduce food rot.

However, you can mitigate bacteria by keeping your food stored in clean containers and removing any food showing the first signs of decay.

2 – Fungi

Many mushrooms are delicious, while others are used for a “good” time. Still, others are poisonous (and potentially deadly).

But all varieties are bad if they spontaneously sprout on survival food.

You need to keep a careful watch on you’re food for any fungal growth.

3 – Insects

Food with insect infestation can be a horrible and even traumatic experience.

Not only is it totally gross, but it may require you to throw everything out.

Once ants, beetles, maggots, flies, moths, or any other creepy crawly gets in, they will quickly infest everything they can. So keep these insects away at all costs.

We’ll get into insect repellant and eradication methods later…

4 – Vermin

Rats, mice, raccoons, squirrels, or any animal with a nose and appetite for garbage; loves free food.

So use traps and hard-sided containers with tight seals for your underground food storage site. Otherwise, a significant portion of it may get snatched by uninvited pests.

5 – People

Perhaps the most frustrating challenge of all is other humans. People love food and they love buried treasure.

It is a combination that puts your underground stash of food in severe danger.

How awful would it be to visit your root cellar to find it’s been completely raided? Talk about brutal.

So later on, we’ll discuss in detail a few camouflaging techniques to prevent this from happening. But it’s also important to keep the location of any survival cache (be it full of food, or equipment, or relevant documents) a secret.

HOW TO HIDE YOUR ROOD CELLAR

This is an essential step!

Just dropping off a bunch of food in the middle of the woods is not enough to protect it from motivated intruders.

Camouflaging helps keep your food hidden from people and animals alike, so it’s a vital step to protecting your survival goods.

Depending on which method of food storage you decided to go with, there will be different levels of work involved in hiding your food.

If you just buried a big plastic drum, then it might be as easy as laying dirt, grass, twigs, pinecones, and whatever else looks natural over the top.

But if you have a full-fledged root cellar that needs disguising, you may need to get more creative.

For bigger structures, you should plant trees shrubs and other plants that grow in the area around your structure.

On top of this, make sure you bury it well, and the surrounding areas look natural.

Bigger storage facilities are harder to camouflage, but as I said at the beginning of this section: this step is essential!

So do not skimp out.

If your food supply is out of sight of potential thieves, it is certainly out of mind too.

MAINTAINING YOUR ROOT CELLAR FOOD SUPPLY

Depending on how much of your food is non-perishable, and how large your supply of food is, will determine how much maintenance is required.

If you have lots of fresh foods stored or foods that expire rather quickly, then you’ll need to make regular supply/maintenance trips to ensure timely use and rotation.

That’s the biggest regular task of owning a food supply. Making sure you trade out expiring food for new food.

Keep an eagle eye on your expiration dates is important because contracting a severe case of food poisoning in a survival situation, your chances of survival sink like a ship.

A case of food poisoning makes it difficult to ingest the essential nutrients and vitamins and can lead to severe dehydration and even death by starvation.

To help prevent any spoilage, you should build a spreadsheet and label everything. Then keep the spreadsheet handy inside your food container/cellar and invest in a good labeler.

Regular maintenance also includes:

  • Checking seals on doors and walls to ensure that they have not been broken or chewed.
  • Monitoring temperature and humidity, restocking food that has been used or thrown out, checking the locks for rust and degradation, cleaning out triggered mouse/rat traps and flypaper.
  • Also, make sure after multiple maintenance trips to your food storage site, you are not carving out a trail.

However, this regular maintenance can compromise all your camouflage efforts. Since now there’s basically a line that leads straight to your food stash.

So always take unique routes to your underground food storage location and consciously work to cover up your own tracks around the burial site.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Burying food in an underground container or facility is a survival method that human beings have been employing for thousands of years.

This way of preserving food has saved countless lives from starvation since its inception. And it’s still entirely applicable today.

Building your own survival food cache is both useful in times of calm and essential in times of chaos.

There is no telling what situation might force you to need your buried stash of food, but no matter what it is, having a backup supply of food essential in today’s fragile and uncertain times.

50 Numbers From 2019 That Are Almost Too Crazy To Believe

One of the best ways to determine where things are heading is to look back at how much has changed over the past 12 months.  2019 has been one of the most memorable years in our history, and it has certainly set the stage for the critical events of the decade to come.  However, not everyone views this moment in our history the same way.  For example, one “expert” that is being heavily quoted by the mainstream media is claiming that 2019 was the culmination of “the best decade in human history”.  His main argument seems to be that since “the ecological footprint of human activity” appears to be shrinking, the world must be a better place than it was before as a result.  And certainly there are many other voices out there that are boldly proclaiming that we have entered a golden new era of peace and prosperity and that the best is yet to come.  You can buy that argument if you want, but there are other voices that believe that everything that is wrong with our society is reaching a very dangerous crescendo.  For those with that perspective, it appears that we are very close to a societal tipping point and that the years ahead are when we will finally pay the price for decades of exceedingly bad decisions.

So what do you think?

Will the 2020s be the best of times or the worst of times?

As you ponder that question, here are 50 numbers from 2019 that are almost too crazy to believe…

What You Should Always Keep Raw Honey In Your Survival Backpack

When it comes to emergency preparedness, I can always count on my group to function as one squared away team. We spend a great deal of time training and testing out new gear. We keep what works a discard the rest. It is an ongoing process that keeps us proficient with our skills and continually learning new ones. This type of lifestyle is required if we hope to bode well during any crisis. It’s not just practice that will get us where we need to be… It’s perfect practice that will truly make all the difference. One aspect many don’t consider is nutrient-rich foods like raw honey when preparing their go backpacks. Read on to learn why raw honey is so valuable!

Benefits of RAW Honey For Survival

As the leader of my little group, I am continually evaluating what our teams’ strengths and weaknesses are. As humans, we generally like to work on things that we are not only familiar with, but also proficient in. When it comes to the flipside of the coin, and we need to exploit our weaknesses… Well, let’s just say that the process becomes a whole lot more difficult. Knowing this, I tend to integrate the skill sets that our group is lacking in, bundled with the skills that they feel that they have mastered.

I abide by the philosophy of –  Give them what they think they want while integrating exactly what they need!

When it comes to the skill sets that we are lacking in, there are certainly quite a few. But if you held me to the fire and asked me to limit my response to only two aspects… They would be food intake and physical fitness. Luckily, when my group is with me in the field, they get plenty of physical preparedness exercise. But when it comes to their food intake and nutrition, which is difficult for me to monitor, It would certainly top my list of:

“Issues that need to be addressed within my preparedness group.”

I focus on nutrition principles as opposed to diets with my NTC Method. Diets are temporary and nutrition principles are much easier to integrate into a lifestyle. One of the principles that I suggest to my NTC Members is to integrate RAW honey into their diet. RAW honey has an amazing amount of benefits that are important to anyone’s health. However, when it comes to those of us focused on survival and emergency preparedness, it would be difficult to find one complete food, that can assist us in our mission, as much as RAW honey can.

I was in Western Europe a couple of weeks ago. I was there for teaching purposes as well as to catch up on some much needed R&R. Whenever I go to this specific area in Portugal, I search the local markets for their infamous RAW honey. I first had some of this magical concoction nearly a decade ago. I had never tasted anything like it before and have yet to come across its equal. The bees that make this honey feed off of the local eucalyptus trees. Not only is the taste amazing, but the health benefits are something that every survivalist would want to take advantage of.

On this recent trip to Portugal, I was able to track down the beekeeper for this wonderful substance and he offered to teach me a bit about his bee colonies. I eagerly suited up in one of his beekeeping suits and began my educational tour. It wasn’t long before we ran into some wasps that were attacking one of the colonies. I was told that each wasp eats approximately 60 bees per day. As you can imagine, this can wreak havoc on any bee colony. If the wasp issue is not addressed quickly, they can wipe out the specific bee colony and eventually… All of them.

The beekeeper showed me how he not only finds, but also destroys wasp nests. Wasps have a knack for cover and concealment. Within a couple of months, they can build a nest that hosts thousands of wasps. Luckily, my beekeeper friend knows exactly how to address these unwanted visitors. Not only is he proficient at finding and destroying the wasp nests, but he can also battle them one on one like a UFC fighter in the octagon… And yes, my beekeeper buddy Always Wins!  ?

I knew how important bees were to the existence of humans and our ecosystem in general. I realized that bees are our major pollinator. Without bees, many of our crops would be lost and the world would cease to exist; At least in the way that we currently know it. Pesticides are also another culprit that are jeopardizing our bee population. As I toured the bee colonies the beekeeper, Joaquim, showed me various crops that he was growing in the area. He explained to me that he will never use any foreign pesticides on his crops. Not only would those toxic chemicals devastate his bees but they are also detrimental to our health.

Let’s Get Back To The Magical Honey…

My tour was coming to an end and I was overwhelmed and even saddened by much of the information that I learned. We tend to take many things for granted, but on a whole, We truly need to start addressing these matters that affect our health.

Without our health… What do we truly have?

Why I Always Keep RAW Honey In My BackpackWhy I Always Keep RAW Honey In My Backpack

As we got back to the starting point of my educational tour, Joaquim had a few items for us to taste. As you can imagine, I was excited since I already knew a bit of what he had in store for us. Joaquim laid out a tray of delicacies and if I attempted to explain the taste, I would just be wasting words on paper. He had locally sourced cheese, freshly baked bread, a homemade red wine that any sommelier would approve of -and of course… The prized honey that makes me drool just by thinking of it.

I was certainly privileged to have had this experience. Not only was it educational, but it was also surreal in many ways. What we take for granted on a daily basis can make all the difference in the world for our current and future population. I had a detailed list of reasons why I keep RAW honey in my go bag at all times. Once I was done with this experience, I was able to add to that list and also solidify my other reasons for honey’s inclusion in my pack.

I would like to share a few of my reasons for having RAW honey on me at all times while in the field.

Reasons Why I Always Keep RAW Honey In My Go Bag

1. Honey Is Filled With Phytonutrients:

The honey that I am referencing here is RAW. This means that the honey is 100% pure and has never been heated, pasteurized or processed. Many people feel that honey is honey and head to the local grocery store for a small jar shaped like a bear. Please keep in mind that this type of honey is basically refined sugar. RAW honey contains health-boosting phytonutrients that get destroyed during the refining process in most honey currently available at the grocery store.

Phytonutrients are basically compounds produced by plants in order to protect themselves from disease, germs, bugs and other negative issues. When we consume these phytonutrients, it gives our immune system a boost and helps to protect us from disease. RAW honey has a plethora of phytonutrients that when consumed and even topically applied in some instances, can go a long way in keeping us healthy.

2. Honey Soothes A Sore Throat

When spending the night in the field, I sometimes wake up with a sore throat. It could be caused by the weather or even a bunch of yelling that I did the day before. I prefer coffee in the morning but if I feel the onset of a sore throat, tea with RAW honey is always my first choice.

Why I Always Keep RAW Honey In My Backpack

The RAW honey has a way of instantly coating the throat, giving me immediate relief. It also has the health benefits that we have been mentioning in this article that will give my system a boost and help to fend off any other symptoms that I may experience from an oncoming cold.

3. Honey Doesn’t Spoil Or Expire

Once again, I am referring to RAW honey when I state that honey does not spoil or expire. As long as it is sealed correctly and is kept away from direct heat, your honey can last forever! I realize that some RAW Honey brands in the grocery stores affix expiration, or best used by labels. However, this is a requirement by our government. Even salt and pepper have an expiration label at the grocery store.

Since I have been aware of this info for quite some time, RAW honey has been a part of my go bag for years! I do not have to worry about spoilage and I know that I can count on my RAW honey to make my mission a bit healthier and of course, much tastier!

4. Honey Is An Antibiotic/ Antimicrobial

Since ancient times, RAW honey has been used to accelerate healing. When RAW honey is applied to a wound, its antibacterial properties keep the wound moist and helps it to heal much faster. RAW honey also has a high viscosity which helps it to form a protective layer which aids in deterring infections.

Why I Always Keep RAW Honey In My Backpack

“There are many reports of honey being very effective as dressing of wounds, burns, skin ulcers and inflammations; the antibacterial properties of honey speed up the growth of new tissue to heal the wound”(1)

Realizing how effective these antibiotic properties are in RAW honey make it a no-brainer when it comes to it being a staple in all of my go bags.

5. Honey Is A Preservative

Once again, our ancient society had a pretty good grasp on many of the benefits of RAW honey. One facet is that the ancients realized that honey makes a great preservative. Since there is such a high amount of concentrated sugar in RAW honey, it combats bacteria and yeast and keeps it from contaminating the honey. The process is known as osmosis and is certainly a benefit of having RAW honey with you during a SHTF scenario.

Why I Always Keep RAW Honey In My Backpack

6. Honey Is An Energy Booster

Whether you are out on the trail in a recreational or emergency situation, an energy boost is usually welcomed. It helps with morale as well as getting the mission completed in a timely fashion. RAW honey is packed with energy giving carbohydrates. Honey’s natural sugars help to combat fatigue while work is being performed. Glucose, which is contained in honey, gets absorbed rather quickly by the body which turns into immediate energy for us.

7. Honey Adds Flavor To Bland Foods

Along with all the health benefits, RAW honey happens to taste incredibly good! By having a jar of RAW honey in my backpack, I have countless recipes that I can use to make food that generally tastes bland, into something that tastes like a piece of gourmet dessert. I have used honey to dress up a bland piece of fish. I have used it in stews to give them a bit of sweetness when other seasonings were not available. Of course… It also turns a regular cup of tea into a much sought after treat; especially on those rainy and lonely days in the field.

Why I Always Keep RAW Honey In My Backpack

Bottom Line:

The list of RAW honey benefits is vast and seems to grow each year. We need to realize the great benefits that we receive from honey but we also need to be aware of what is going on with its source. If we continue to turn a blind eye to the destruction of our bee population, we will be getting rid of a lot more than just a superfood… We will also be jeopardizing life for not only us but also for the ones that we love.

Video Demonstrates How to Break Into a “Smart” Home with a Laser

This article was originally published by B.N. Frank at Activist Post.

Adults and children being spied on, taunted and threatened continue to be reported because of how easy it is to hack wireless “Smart” devices including baby monitors, home assistants, and home security systems (see 1234).  Because people seem to still be interested in buying these hackable products anyway, companies have no plans to stop making them.

If you’re thinking about investing in “Smart” home devices, here’s a new video you may want to watch first:

FYI:  The FBI has also issued new warnings about “Smart” TVs too.

Another bummer about hackable “smart” and wireless devices – they emit Electromagnetic Radiation (aka “Electrosmog”) like Bluetooth, cell phone radiation and WiFi which is harmful to people, animals (see 12345) and even plants.

With all the talk about food storage and growing our own food, I did a little digging around to find out what some people ate during America’s Great Depression of the 1930’s.  Surprisingly, a few of these were made by my mother and grandmother, traditions, I’m sure, from a more frugal era.  I still have a soft spot for Chipped Beef on Toast!  How many of these are familiar to you, and do you have any others to add to the list?

  • Milk toast
  • Chipped beef on toast
  • Cucumber and mustard sandwiches
  • Mayonnaise sandwiches
  • Ketchup sandwiches
  • Hot milk and rice
  • Turtle/tortoise
  • Gopher
  • Potato soup – water base, not milk
  • Dandelion salad
  • Lard sandwiches
  • Bacon grease sandwiches
  • Sugar sandwiches
  • Hot dogs and baked beans
  • Road kill
  • One eyed Sam – piece of bread with an easy over egg in the center
  • Oatmeal mixed with lard
  • Fried potatoes and hot dogs
  • Onion sandwich – slices of onion between bread
  • Tomato gravy and biscuits
  • Deep fried chicken skin
  • Cornbread in milk
  • Gravy and bread – as a main dish
  • Toast with mashed potatoes on top with gravy
  • Creamed corn on toast
  • Corn mush with milk for breakfast, fried corn mush for dinner
  • Squirrel
  • Rice in milk with some sugar
  • Beans
  • Fried potato peel sandwiches
  • Banana slices with powdered sugar and milk
  • Boiled cabbage
  • Hamburger mixed with oatmeal
  • American cheese sandwich: ‘American’ cheese was invented because it was cheap to make, and didn’t require refrigeration that many people who lived during this era didn’t have.
  • Tomato gravy on rice
  • Toast with milk gravy
  • Water fried pancakes
  • Chicken feet in broth
  • Fried bologna
  • Warm canned tomatoes with bread
  • Butter and sugar sandwiches
  • Fried potato and bread cubes
  • Bean soup
  • Runny eggs with grits
  • Butter and grits with sugar and milk
  • Baked apples
  • Sliced boiled pork liver on buttered toast (slice liver with potato peeler)
  • Corn meal mush
  • Spaghetti with tomato juice and navy beans
  • Whatever fish or game you could catch/hunt
  • Tomato sandwiches
  • Hard boiled eggs in white sauce over rice
  • Spam and noodles with cream of mushroom soup
  • Rag soup: spinach, broth and lots of macaroni
  • Garbanzo beans fried in chicken fat or lard, salted, and eaten cold
  • Popcorn with milk and sugar – ate it like cereal

Lessons learned from this list?  Stock up on ingredients for bread, including buckets of wheat.  Bread, in some form, is one of the main ingredients for many of these meals.  Second, know how to make different types of bread.  Next, have chickens around as a source for meat and eggs, and if possible, have a cow or goat for milk.  Know how to make many different foods from scratch.

Another lesson is to have a garden that will provide at least some fresh produce, and plant fruit trees and bushes. You may be interested in this article with tips for Planning an Edible Landscape. Finally, don’t waste anything, even chicken feet!

9 Shipwreck Survival Skills You Should Know About

You may have witnessed a shipwreck in the movies, in the news, on television, or the internet. But have you ever thought that if you do get shipwrecked, will you be able to survive it?

Surviving a shipwreck starts from the moment the vessel starts to take in water unnaturally – where it tilts and sinks in the process. There can be two scenarios you can find yourself in. Either you will be adrift at sea or you will end up on land. The end goal is to survive either one to the point where you can get rescued.

Shipwreck Survival Skills: Surviving the Deep Waters

1. Be Ready

Be Ready | Shipwreck Survival Skills You Should Know About
Always hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Have a bug out bag with you before taking a sea trip. There are tons of ways to build your own survival bag where you can be comfortable bringing it around with you. It will contain all the necessary essentials for your survival at sea. In case you might not be able to grab a life vest, learn how to stay afloat by taking swimming lessons.

2. Be Informed

Read the emergency signs all over the place once you board the ship. There are a few things you need to do before the ship heads out to sea. These are:

  • Determine where the nearest exit is from your room.
  • Familiarize yourself with the insides of the ship.
  • Find out where the life vests and life rafts are. Don’t forget to read the instructions on how to use a life vest and deploy a lifeboat.
  • Locate where they place a first aid kit.

3. Stay Calm

You have to stay calm when evacuating the ship. You must keep a sound mind when doing this as there will be a lot of screaming and shouting going on. Pay attention to the instructions of the captain or crew over the PA system. If you’ve done the first step, you may already have a life vest on you and would be heading to the life raft. Make sure you leave everything else except your bug-out bag.

4. Jump up Top and Stay Away

If you fail to get on a life raft and you have to jump off the ship, do this at the topmost part of the ship and at a spot away from everybody else. If you jump at the lower sections, someone might land on you hurting you or knocking you unconscious. Once in the water, swim farthest away from the ship and onto a raft or floating debris. Just watch out because there might be other people trying to grab you out of panic pulling you underwater.

5. Perform First Aid Treatment

If you have cuts or wounds, you can wrap them up to minimize or stop the bleeding. Add some extra layers of clothing on you to help your body cope with temperature changes in the water. Hypothermia can set in if you have very less clothing on you.

6. Stay Together

Tie all life rafts together. Staying in a group will increase your chances of survival. If life rafts are unavailable, put your arms over each other’s shoulder and form one huge ring of people. This will ease the efforts of floating on your own and be able to help those who don’t have life vests. It will also make you a bigger target for search and rescue teams above and on sea level.

7. Be Ready to Defend Yourselves

Being together will also give you the capability of defending each other especially from predators of the sea like sharks and killer whales. Grab any pole or a stick you can use to poke at them. If worse comes to worst, aim for the eyes and the gills.

8. Signal Rescue Units

This is where your bug-out bag will come in handy. It will contain flares, light sticks, waterproof flashlights, and a signal mirror. It may also contain a cell phone and a two-way radio. You can use any of these to call or signal for help. If you’re on an uninhabited island, you can start a signal fire using the fire-starting kit in your bug out bag. You can use leaves and brightly colored clothing to form an SOS sign.

9. Head for the Nearest Island

If an island is in view, head off and start swimming or rowing for it. Other survival skills like starting a fire, building a temporary shelter, foraging or hunting for food, and acquiring drinkable water will come into play. If you’re on an uninhabited island, that is. If you are fortunate and land on an island with even the smallest of populations, then you’re more than blessed because an inhabited island will mean there may be forms of communication and a hospital.

There are a lot of survival methods for castaways at sea or on an island. Ultimately, be of sound mind and never lose hope. Never allow your circumstance to weaken your morale or will to live. A person with a broken spirit is already a dead one.

10 Things That Just Happened In America During The Holiday Season That Will Make You Cringe

Everything is great in America, isn’t it?  After all, the new Star Wars movie just came out, stock prices just hit another all-time record high, and Americans spent more money on Christmas gifts this year than ever before.  According to some people, this is the greatest time to be alive in all of American history, and the years that are ahead of us are going to be even better.  Of course if you are gullible enough to believe that there is a giant bridge in California that I would like to sell to you.  We live at a time when our society is literally falling apart all around us, and throwing even more money at our problems is not going to fix them.  As I noted the other day, “the suicide rate is at an all-time high, we are fighting the worst drug crisis in our history, according to the CDC more than 110 million Americans have an STD, and we have the highest percentage of children living with a single parent of any nation in the entire world.”  In other words, anyone that is attempting to argue that this is a golden era in America history is being more than just a little bit delusional.

Yes, the stock market has been soaring in recent days, and that is a good thing.

But investors are pouring their money into stocks because they believe that America has an exceedingly bright future.

When that optimism disappears, stock prices will collapse, and then what will we have to brag about?

Everywhere around us, the fabric of our society is deteriorating, and our decline seems to be accelerating with each passing month.

In this article, I am going to share yet more examples of our stunning societal decline with you.  The following are 10 things that just happened in America during the holiday season that will make you cringe…

#1 Two real life grinches were trying to ruin the holidays for as many people in Roseville, California as possible before the police caught up with them.  According to one media report, they were caught “with approximately 100 stolen packages” in their van: Two men are behind bars after they were found with approximately 100 stolen packages in Roseville, according to the Roseville Police Department.

#2 This is known as “the season of giving”, but one 65-year-old guy in Colorado decided it would be more fun to do it with other people’s money: Just after noon on Monday, a 65-year-old man walked into a downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado bank and stole thousands of dollars before running outside and tossing the cash up into the air while yelling “Merry Christmas!”

#3 Speaking of Colorado, one group of high school students was recently forced to recite poetry that contained worship of Moloch.  Apparently that whole “separation of church and state” thing does not apply to pagan deities: A school in Steamboat Springs is under scrutiny after a parent reported an assignment in which students were required to recite sexually explicit and/or distasteful poetry that includes worship of the pagan deity Moloch as well as conveying the topic of “sexting” in society – which was assigned to eleventh grade students without parental consent.

#4 Considering the fact that the streets of San Francisco are constantly littered with human waste, one homeless man decided that it must be okay to defecate in the middle of a grocery store too: The picture shows a disheveled gentleman in a man-bun with his pants around his knees, feces clearly visible on the floor near a chip display as he prepared to wipe.

#5 Don’t let your kids hear about this or you will be sorry.  This holiday season, “fart launchers” became one of the most popular toys in America: The Fart Launcher’s reek, “while incredibly accurate … is organic, plant-based, doesn’t get caught in fabric and dissipates in minutes,” WowWee brand manager Andrew Yanofsky tells The Post.

#6 It just wouldn’t be the holidays unless “Florida man” did something really crazy.  In this instance, a Florida man was trying to bust down a bathroom door with a hatchet: A Shalimar man is charged with trying to attack another man with a hatchet after using the weapon and his feet to bust down a bathroom door. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrested 39-year old Jason Godwin Christmas Day for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and culpable negligence.

#7 You may have been safe, warm and well fed this holiday season, but more than half a million Americans didn’t have a home at all: While millions of Americans celebrate Christmas this year with loved ones, carving turkey and sharing gifts, others are not so fortunate. According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, over half a million of us will spend Christmas on the streets. The government agency estimates that on any given day, around 553,000 Americans are homeless. A third of those are families with young children. African Americans and those with disabilities are particularly likely to become homeless.

#8 One rapper in Los Angeles decided that the best way to address the problem of homelessness was to climb on top of a tall building and throw cash down on to the homeless people living on Skid Row so they could fight over it: The 22-year-old rapper known as Blueface climbed onboard a black Mercedes SUV in Skid Row before throwing money out of a bag while dozens of people below scramble to catch the flying cash and pick it up from the ground. The artist, whose real name is Jonathan Michael Porteris, is known for the Benjamin Franklin tattoo on his cheek and a handful of hit tracks that reached viral status in recent years.

#9 Providing daycare for working parents is apparently quite lucrative if you pack them in like sardines.  When police investigated a suspicious residence in Colorado Springs recently, they found 26 children and two adult workers hidden behind “a false wall”: Not finding any children, officers spoke with Faith, who, according to Sokolik, “refused to cooperate.” While still in the home, officers said they heard the sound of children, Sokolik said. Eventually, they found “a false wall” leading to a finished basement, where they discovered 26 children — 20 more than the license allowed — all under the age of 3, and two adults, police said.

#10 This last item on the list should definitely break your heart.  For many Americans, this is one of the most difficult times of the year.  And when the pressure becomes too much, unfortunately some people completely snap.  On Christmas Day, a 40-year-old mother in Boston threw her two young children off of the roof of a nine-story parking garage before killing herself as well: A Boston woman who pushed her two young children from the top of a parking garage and then killed herself in a double murder suicide has been identified. Erin Pascal, 40, was named on Thursday as the woman whose body was found on the sidewalk next to those of her two young children; four-year-old daughter Allison and 16-month-old Andrew.

It is such a tragic thing when someone commits suicide, because that is never, ever the solution to anything.  There is so much to live for, but our society trains us to relentlessly chase things that don’t really matter.

Sadly, even though the suicide rate is already at a record high, it is likely to go even higher as our society continues to deteriorate in 2020 and beyond.

What we need is not more money.

What Americans really need is more faith, more hope and more love, and those three are in very short supply in our society today.
