Happy New Year

Written by Pat Henry on The Prepper Journal.

So Long, 2019. Hello 2020.

As we at The Prepper Journal look back at 2019, there are a lot of things to be thankful for:

  • Not dying
  • A good economy and low unemployment
  • Preparedness becoming more mainstream as communities and individuals realize the government can’t be relied upon
  • Good guys with guns stopped bad guys with guns
  • Old friends & new friends

But as we go into the last evening of the decade, we can’t help but wonder how the upcoming year will play out, with the constant assault on our rights, the distortion of the meaning of our Constitution, and the upcoming election fiasco. We hope that 2020 winds up being a bit saner in this area, but we remain skeptical.

Stay safe tonight, as New Year’s Eve brings out the stupid in a lot of people. We’ll be staying in, celebrating with family and avoiding the crowds.

What are your plans for tonight, and any predictions about what 2020 will bring? What subjects would you like to see us cover in the upcoming year?

Happy New Year,

Virginia vows to shut down all gun ranges

Written by Pat Henry on The Prepper Journal.

SCOTUS: Second Amendment is a right
Virginia Legislature: Hold my beer.

Looks like the legislature is demonstrating what potential tyranny looks like.

Recent legislation in the form of House Bill 567 would probibit any indoor shooting range, by law, unless it was inside a building owned or leased by the state.

Folks, this is what we’ve feared. Virginia is becoming the California of the East Coast in terms of trying to disarm the population.

Unlike California, a number of county officials have stood up and declared they will not enforce unconstitutional laws.

Read more about the proposal here.

If you’re from Virginia, this upcoming election will be one of the most important you’ll participate in.

If you’re not in Virginia, be vigilant, because if the state legislature in the Old Dominion is successful, it will be spread across the country.

Ironic for a state whose motto is Sic Semper Tyrannis, “Thus always to Tyrants.”

Let’s hope the good people of the state live up to the motto.

7 Edible Insects You’ll Need to Know Before SHTF | Survival Life

In the wild, you can survive by making a meal out of edible insects. You’ll be glad to know they are actually nutritious and could fill your protein needs.

7 Edible Insects to Survive Starvation Outdoors

Eating Insects in the Wild

Being stuck in the wild can make you think of crazy things like having insects for lunch. Disgusting as it may sound, this could actually save your life.

If you’re in no luck finding some edible wild plants outdoors, you might as well start looking for edible insects to get through your hunger problem. You’d be surprised to know of this edible insects list is, in fact, abundant with nutrients that can provide your cellular needs.

It’s better to be prepared and know what can help you survive in the wild, so go on and read along!

1. Ants

|

One great thing about ants is that you can find them in a lot of places. Dig among anthills and scoop up the ants into a container.

It is recommended for you to boil them first before eating to remove the bitter and vinegary taste it has. An ounce contains about 14 grams of proteins and 5.7ml of iron.

2. Termites

|

Termites can be found in hordes and fill your protein needs easily. 100 grams of termites is equivalent to 14.4 grams of protein.

A termite mound can feed a couple of people in one go. These edible bugs for humans are in damp climates like coastal areas and thick forests.

3. Maggots

|

If you ever find a corpse of an animal laying there and being fed on by maggots, never think of these maggots as a waste.

While the maggots are feeding upon the corpse of an animal, you may feed on those maggots in exchange and have the meat they’ve eaten for yourself. Maggots contain both protein and carbohydrates you would need for energy.

RELATED: 5 Beneficial Insects For The Garden: Good Bugs Vs. Bad Bugs

4. Slugs

|

These slimy creatures are rich in minerals which help maintain normal blood flow. Slugs are carriers of harmful parasites that can kill you so it would be wise to cook them first before eating it.

These edible insects can be found abundantly during the rainy season.

5. Cockroaches

|

These are the ones you can find in the wild and not those pesky little buggers that fly around your house. The ones found in the wild feed on fruits and vegetation which are rich in fibers and vitamins A and C.

Have them fried or boiled to kill any bacteria they might have.

6. Locusts

|

Locusts can actually save your life from hunger plus it is rich in both protein and calcium. They travel in swarms and are much bigger than the grasshoppers.

Locusts go to places that have fertile soil, thus, it would be best to look for these edible insects in those places.

7. Grasshoppers

|

Grasshoppers are very rich in protein — for every 100 grams of grasshoppers, there are around 20.6 grams of protein. They can be eaten raw or cooked. But, to add some palate of crunchiness, consider having them cooked.

You can find them on meadows and grassy fields.

Here’s what you need to know about eating edible insects by STORYHIVE:

When SHTF and you run out of food to eat or there are no edible plants in sight, hunt for these edible insects and you’ll get by. However, while these insects are quite nutritious, there are also some that can be poisonous.

Be aware of what you can eat or it could lead to having an upset stomach or something even worse. Make sure to know how these edible insects look like and not mistake them for a poisonous kind.

With that said, it’s also imperative to know how to identify edible insects for your safety.

Have you tried eating any of these edible insects? How was the experience? Share your survival stories in the comments section below!

Tactical Plate Carrier MilitaryIf you’re on the hunt for a new tactical plate carrier vest, you’ve come to the right place.

Because we’ve scoured the internet to find the best advice, information, reviews, and videos about plate carriers.

From basic to the advanced –

I’m going to share everything I’ve learned about Tactical Plate Carriers, specifically:

Note: If you already know what a plate carrier is and why you should get one – feel free to click any link above to skip ahead to “features, “reviews” and “setup”…

WHAT IS A PLATE CARRIER?

A plate carrier is another name for a Tactical Vest that can carry bullet-resistant body armor plates and tactical gear.

Chest Rig

Just A Chest Rig – Not Designed To Carry Plates

It’s basically a “chest rig” that’s designed to add bullet-resistant body armor plates. A regular chest rig can carry all sorts of gear but doesn’t have pockets for body armor plates.

That’s why plate carriers are popular with military personnel around the world. They’re considered an important self-defense upgrade for life-threatening security situations.

And they’re worn by anyone who’s serious about home and family security.

Basically they’re for anyone who wants to be fully prepared for dangerous combat scenarios.

A tactical plate carrier gives you the ability to do three mission-critical things:

  1. Stop Holes (with body armor plates)
  2. Plug Holes (carrying medical gear such as individual first aid kits)
  3. Make Holes (carry extra mags for your firearms)

As you can tell, all three of these functions are essential in any combat situation. It’s able to perform these functions because it consists of three main components:

  1. A Tactical Vest
  2. A Cummerbund
  3. Body Armor Plates

Let’s take a moment to discuss each of these components in more detail…

1 – Tactical Vest

The tactical vest component of a plate carrier is fairly self-explanatory. It’s a vest that fits over your head with a front panel and back panel.

These panels have pockets and/or MOLLE webbing to provide a way to store gear for easy access.

2 – Cummerbund

A plate carrier’s cummerbund is a lot like a belt for a vest. It helps to keep the bottom of the vest tight against your belly. It’s a wide belt made out an elastic material that allows for a perfect “snug” fit of the plate carrier vest.

This helps keep the vest in place at all times – even when running or scrambling.

Some cummerbunds also have velcro or MOLLE webbing attached for even more tactical gear storage options.

3 – Body Armor Plates

Finally, there are the actual plates. For the tactical vest to work as advertised, you must insert plates into it. Hence, the name “plate carrier”.

A plate carrier tactical vest includes large, wide pockets designed to hold bullet-resistant plates covering your vital organs.

Now that we’re all on the same page on WHAT a plate carrier is – let’s talk about why you should own one…

plate carrier for workouts

5 REASONS TO GET ONE

In the very broadest sense – this is an easy one to answer – SAFETY and QUICK ACCESS.

Plate carriers provide protection from small objects that fly at insane speeds. We usually call these small flying objects bullets or shrapnel.

That’s why they are popular for military personnel who expect to see combat.

1 – Military or Combat

If you’re destined to encounter a combat situation it would be silly NOT to invest in a plate carrier. You need such a device to add a layer of protection.

Plus, most plate carriers have MOLLE. This means you can hang a bunch of your tactical gear from your chest.

This is better than carrying your tactical gear in a backpack.

With a tactical backpack, you have to take it off and open it up to access your extra magazines, radio, etc.

Instead, with a plate carrier, all your critical gear is easy to access in the heat of battle. When it comes to combat situations – this setup is IDEAL!

But what about those who are not in the military and don’t expect combat tomorrow? Why would a regular joe citizen decide to invest in one?

There are several additional reasons to consider…

2 – Search and Rescue Operations

Most search and rescue teams wear chest rigs and not plate carriers. Why? Because search and rescue teams must carry a lot of tactical gear. But are less worried about getting shot.

They don’t expect a rescue to turn into a combat situation.

However, there are exceptions to this rule. And with a plate carrier, you HAVE THE OPTION to carry plates or not.

I love optionality – with a plate carrier I can take or leave the plates at home, depending on the situation. But with a chest rig – I don’t have the option of adding plates should the situation call for it.

That’s why I suggest even search and rescue team members should invest in a plate carrier vs just a chest rig.

Take the “free optionality” (i.e. flexibility) when you can get it.

3 – Preparing For A “Worst Case” Scenario

Maybe your someone who worries about the future. You understand peace and calm are the exceptions and not the rule on a long-term historical basis.

You realize in a worst-case type disaster or war – our world could be thrown into absolute chaos. A world of mass-scale looting and rioting.

What could spark such a “doomsday” scenario? Take your pick…

Paranoid? Maybe. But none of these scenarios must be on a massive scale to create localized havoc and chaos.

Scared, hungry, thirsty humans can be very dangerous…

If you live in the US, you may not feel an immediate threat but that’s being complacent.

No one knows what the future brings but I do know this one fact…

As a species – we now have the technological ability to destroy ourselves. To wipe ourselves off the map. You couldn’t say that 100 years ago.

That’s why I believe preparing is not about paranoia – it’s all about being resilient to life’s uncertain future. It’s seeing the real risk of widespread war and chaos mounting.

So, that’s why I believe in stocking up on the tools, supplies, and gear necessary to protect myself and my family. Plate carriers are a wise investment and can provide protection for ALL concern citizens.

Regardless of whether you plan to bug out or stay put.

4 – Hobby – Sport (i.e. Paintball)

The other reason you may want to invest in a plate carrier is for FUN.

Paintball is becoming one of the fastest-growing sports. But getting hit in the chest with a paintball (unprotected) can do serious damage.

Sure, it won’t kill you but you could end up with tender bruising for weeks.

The average paintball marker can shoot 300 feet per second (fps), or slightly below this. Most paintball playing fields require a maximum of 280 fps for safety purposes.

With those sorts of projectile speeds – you’ll want something to protect yourself.

Example Of Airsoft Foam Pad

So, if you play paintball often – or even occasionally – you’ll want to invest in a tactical plate carrier. That way, you can add air soft foam plates to it for protection.

Foam plates are lighter than steel plates. So they’ll provide some protection against flying paintballs without weighing you down.

5 – Work Out Gear

Plate carriers are a tool you can use to make a workout more strenuous.

For example, you can wear one (with plates in it) to increase your body weight. This makes pull-ups, pushups, running, and even swimming much more challenging.

So they are a simple way to take your training to the next level.

Now, anyone who uses a plate carrier for workouts usually leaves the tactical gear off. Otherwise, the gear attached to the outside would flop around and make working out a pain in the ass.

Ok, those are the main reasons to own a plate carrier. Maybe you’re only interested in one of these “reasons”. Or maybe they all sort of apply to you.

Either way, once you’re convinced, it’s time to figure out which one is BEST FOR YOU. Because not all plate carriers are created equal.

So, let’s discuss some of the key features to look for…

KEY FEATURES TO LOOK FOR IN A QUALITY TACTICAL PLATE CARRIER

If you want to skip reading this section – you can get almost everything you need to know from this excellent video:

Size ( Small Plate Carriers vs Large Plate Carriers)

Most plate carriers fall into the category of “one size fits most”. They use adjustable straps and an elastic waistband called a cummerbund.

This allows you to customize them to fit you perfectly.

With that said, if you’re extremely petite (or you’re looking to fit a child) OR you’re extra tall/big – you may need to shop around for a unique one to cater to your unique size requirement.

Weight

Of course, with any gear or backpack, the weight comes into play.

The heavier an item is to carry, the more daunting it becomes (especially over long periods).

So, assuming a similar quality – lighter is better.

But here’s the deal – the real “weight” in a plate carrier is not in the vest itself – it’s in the plates.

Foam plates for practice or sport (paintball) are extremely lightweight. But these foam plates are NOT bullet resistant.

For that type of protection, you’ll need steel or ceramic plates which (as you can guess) are heavier.

We’ll go into more about plate options later in this article…but for now, here’s an article that goes into “Ballistic Armor Levels”.

Fabric

One of the best and most affordable fabric options is 500D Cordura Nylon. 500D is the abrasive resistance nature of the fabric. The higher the number the “stronger”.

500 is solid and usually enough for most missions. But you can find some plate carriers with fabrics abrasivenesses of 1000 or more…

But watch out for any fabrics with poly mixes – they have lower melting points vs Cordura Nylon.

Stitching

Stitching quality is critical and comes down to three main things to look out for:

  1. The type of thread used
  2. The threading techniques used
  3. The locations of reinforcement

1 – Type Of Thread Used

Solid types of thread are a bonded 92 or better.

Ideally, your plate carrier uses a quality thread. But good lucking finding out what was used. Rarely do you see the “type of thread” advertized in marketing.

So if this is something you must know – you’ll likely need to contact the manufacturer and ask.

2 – Threading Techniques

And single sticking is fine throughout as long as it uses bar tack on high-stress points.

But at reinforcement locations there are two stitching options:

  • Bar Tack Sticking
  • Single Stitching Build-Up

A bar tack stitch uses a specialized machine to create a very tough and dense series of threads. Bar tack stitching is the most effective way to prevent rips and tears at high-stress points.

The alternative methods at reinforcement points are called a single stitch build up. It’s cheaper to use (because it uses the same sewing machine) but it’s not as effective.

It’s essentially running the sewing machine over the same place several times. But it cannot get nearly the same level of thread density as a bar tack stitch.

3 – Reinforce Locations

The shoulder attachment points MUST be reinforced. But in general, the more reinforcement points with bar stitching, the better.

Buckles

ITW buckles are best. However, there are a lot of knock-offs that are not as good.

Look for reinforcement pillars on inside of the buckle – this helps to keep a buckle working for years, even under abuse conditions.

Webbing

Look for mil-spec webbing and watch out for fake webbing.

You can tell fake webbing when it looks like the same fabric the vest is made out of just folded over and sewn…

Back Mesh

The best plate carriers have a mesh buffer and padding between the plate and your body.

This helps to add comfort as well as breathability. 3d spacer mesh – good thickness and good depth – provides more breathability. However, “mesh looking fabrics” provides little to no real padding or sweat relief.

Also, a pontoon system is nice. This is where the outsides of the back foam are slightly thicker, which creates an air channel in the middle of your back.

Velcro & Elastic

Gerald Schwartz (mil-spec) velcro is considered high quality. But in general, just make sure you test out the velcro and elastic as soon as you get a chance.

Make sure the velcro is extremely sticky and grippy. And the elastic is stretchy but strong.

Plate Carrier Profile Options

The traditional cut and shape of most plate carriers are fairly standard design. However, there are some unique exceptions you may want to consider:

  • Concealable Plate Carrier
  • Low Profile Plate Carrier
  • Minimalistic Plate Carrier

There are carriers specifically designed to be highly concealable. Hence the name “concealable plate carrier”.

This is a low-profile tactical vest that is thinner than a regular one.

These minimalistic plate carriers come in handy in situations where you don’t want everyone to know your wearing one.

For example, let’s say you’re heading to a business meeting with the mafia …You might want to wear one but you don’t want them to know!

Here’s The Ferro Concepts Slickster Minimalist Plate Carrier (for those who are interested in low profile).

You can easily throw a concealable plate carrier like this under your sport coat – just in case!

What About A Plate Carrier Backpack

Most plate carrier vests have a pouch for plates in both the front and back but maybe you don’t want full coverage…

Or maybe you’re just looking to cover your backside (or give your kid something they can take to school with them for protection from an active shooter).

In these situations consider getting a plate carrier backpack.

It’s one way to add a level of protection without wearing a full-fledged plate carrier.

Honestly, any backpack with a slip pocket can add a bullet-resistant plate.

So, don’t get too hung up on the naming convention.

The bottom line is:

If you can fit a steel plate carrier into a backpack you’ve got yourself a plate carrier backpack.

MOLLE

A MOLLE plate carrier is the exact opposite of a concealable plate carrier. Why? Because a MOLLE plate carrier is designed to hang a lot of tactical gear on the outside of it.

You want to load it up with extra magazines, radios, compasses, food, water, etc.

So with MOLLE, you’re not trying to hide the fact you’re wearing a plate carrier. You’re going to use this piece of tactical gear to hold all your stuff right where you can access it FAST.

Color Options

There are four main color options with plate carriers:

  • Brown
  • Olive
  • Black
  • Camouflage

I’ve also come across a Navy-Blue plate carrier in my research. But never anything crazy like orange, pink, purple, red, etc.

Brown and Olive Plate Carriers

The most common color for a plate carrier is a simple light brown, sandy brown or olive drab color. It’s because brown is a nondescript color.

Meaning you won’t stick out like a sore thumb in a combat situation with a boring sandy brown color.

It’s all about situational awareness.

Maroon, orange, and purple plate carriers wouldn’t sell very well since they would get noticed in a bad way.

Black Plate Carrier

Classic black plate carriers are also easy to find. Black is great for concealment at night but it’s not going to keep you very hidden during the day…

Camouflage Carrier

There are also a lot of camo color options. These are ideal for staying concealed in forested terrain.

MultiCam is a specific camouflage pattern developed by Crye Precision. Lots of people like this MultiCam plate carrier pattern. It works well in all sorts of environments.

Highly Adjustable

Shoulder straps should allow for a wide range of adjustment and the cummerbund as well.

Any other adjustments should be considered extra not necessary.

Includes A Dedicated Water Bladder Pouch

Having a dedicated water bladder pouch is a nice option to have. Often these setups include hydration tube clips to bring water from the pouch to your mouth.

Allowing you to take a sip during combat without stopping or losing concentration.

Price – Cheap Plate Carrier

As with any tactical gear, price is a factor. But like most things in life – you get what you pay for.

Sure, you should always look at the cheap plate carriers. But NEVER settle for an inferior product. And don’t be afraid to return anything subpar or poorly constructed.

Are you on a bit of a budget? Then you’re looking for value – a decent quality at a decent price.

Do you have no budget restrictions? Then you’re looking for the top of the line and are willing to pay up for it.

PLATE CARRIER SETUP & ACCESSORIES

Professional / Duty Plate Carrier Setup:

Watch the following video to learn how to best setup your new plate carrier:

Body Armor Plates

Most plate carriers DO NOT come with body armor plates – you typically buy those separate.

The good news is, the selection of body armor plates is vast.

  • There are lightweight foam plates that are ideal for practice and can protect you against BB’s or paintballs.
  • Or there are heavier bullet-resistance steel plates to slow down and hopefully stop a real bullet from penetration.
  • And everything in between.

Plate choice is a massive topic, beyond the scope of this article – however, here are some suggested places to research the RIGHT ones to pair with your new tactical plate carrier vest.

First off is a this Ballistic Level Chart from AR500 (see below):

What body armor should you run? Flat, Curved, Curved Buildup and Square…

Tough Tactical Hook

If you own a plate carrier, you MUST get one of these tough tactical hooks.

Why? Because it’s a patented grip handle. Making it ideal for easy transportation of heavy gear.

It has an I-beam construction and uses an impact-resistant resin. Making this “clothes hanger” nearly indestructible.

It has an incredible 150lb load capacity!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Of all the tactical gear you could invest in, you should get your tactical plate carrier vest first.

Why? Because you can build your gear around your vest. Instead of trying to make all your gear fit on your vest after the fact.

This helps to keep everything organized and efficient. It also helps to keep weigh down.

The bottom line is:

Tactical pate carriers are a must-own piece of gear for anyone who anticipates the possibility of combat or being shot at someday.

5 Best Tactical Pens For Self Defense (And How To Use It Like A Master)

Best Tactical PensThe Ultimate Guide To Finding And Using A Tactical Pen

A tactical pen is a deadly survival weapon in the right set of hands.

In the wrong set of hands, it’s a harmless writing instrument.

But if you want to carry a “less-than-lethal” self-defense weapon, you can’t do much better than a Tactical Pen.

It’s hiding a weapon in plain sight.

And it’s an item that everyone should be carrying anyway, right?

I can’t count how many times I’ve had to borrow a pen to fill out a form or sign a check.

With a tactical pen, you avoid this issue and up your self-protection at the same time.

Kubotan

A QUICK HISTORY OF THE TACTICAL PEN – (a.k.a KUBOTAN)

In the late 60s, a man named Soke Takayuki Kubota invented a simple keychain weapon called a Kubotan.

In combination with some very basic locks and pressure, point strikes a Kubotan is incredibly effective at turning someone into a whimpering heap of terrified jelly.

Most people recognize these implements as the small key-chain attachments that are usually blunt at one end and taper to a dull point on the other.

Kubotan’s are particularly useful for a few reasons: they are easy to conceal by fitting into small pockets with ease. When using a Kubotan correctly, they hurt like hell.

When used incorrectly, they still hurt like hell.

They are cheap. And the techniques are relatively easy to learn.

On top of that, practicing with a Kubotan teaches us something paramount about survival and combat: even simple, mundane objects can be surprisingly potent means of self-defense.

Being a creative survivalist is about thinking outside of the box, and breaking down preconceptions of what it means to compete and combat.

And a weapon can be anything – a keychain, a tactical pen, a pencil, a railroad spike, a drill bit, or a coffee mug.

What you use is less important than how you use it.

Anything can be a deadly weapon, but nobody can deny that some objects make better ones than others.

So what’s the best option to carry a Kubotan?

WHAT IS A TACTICAL PEN EXACTLY?

You can think of a tactical pen (or self defense pen) as a Kubotan disguised as a pen.

Like Kubatan’s, they are forged from hardened metal. The metal is stamped with small and tight friction grooves to improve grip.

The non-writing end of the pen incorporates a hardened tip. This tip is the primary weapon of the tactical pen.

It’s designed to penetrate and injure. It’s made to puncture and incapacitate. So a tactical pen is a pen made out of metal, with stamped grip grooves and a hardened tip.

Few products can offer you as much utility as the tactical pen.

Not only is it a mean weapon that can poke, prod, twist, and stab anyone dumb enough to get on the wrong side of it, but it is also one of man’s greatest inventions: the pen.

A self defense pen is what is known as a “survivor’s multi-tool”, or a survival device that serves multiple purposes.

Other survivor multi-tools can include survival hatchets, sword canes, dogs, walking sticks, matches or lighters, anything with two or more functions.

And as we all know, the pen is mightier than the sword or so they say.

But what could be mightier than a pen in the right hands?

That is a question I cannot answer. To me, it’s a fantastic personal protection tool.

WHY EVERYONE SHOULD CARRY A TACTICAL PEN

Being fully armed and ready to defend yourself at all times is no easy task.

In fact, in our modern world, most people are disarmed more than armed. Often because social and political regulations forbid conventional weapons from being openly carried.

The harsh reality is you can’t legally carry guns everywhere, nor swords, clubs, bows, blowguns, or knives.

But there are solutions around these restrictions. Protecting yourself with a self-defense tool does not mean you have to be armed to the teeth.

Even if you’re already a highly trained martial artist, whose hands and feet are weapons unto themselves, having a self defense pen is always a welcomed advantage.

And that’s why you should carry a tactical pen.

BEST TACTICAL PEN USES IN TODAY’S UNCERTAIN WORLD

The primary use of a tactical pen is straightforward.

It’s a device for self-defense and writing. But there are two other lesser-known uses of tactical pens such as:

Breaking Glass

The pointed end of a tactical pen is perfect for breaking panes of glass.

Just grip the pen firmly in a gloved hand, stand back against the same wall the glass is off to one side, and swing your arm from the elbow like a pendulum.

Slamming the pointed metal tip into the corner of a pane.

The glass should shatter with ease.

DNA Collection

Yeah, believe it or not, these fancy little self-defense tools come with a built-in device for tracking an assailant with the power of science.

Some self defense pens even have a crown studded end cap that is ideal for scraping, jabbing, scratching and stabbing an attacking.

Leaving blood or flesh behind that can be analyzed by a lab.

And here are the 10 most useful features of tactical pens:

  1. They are discrete; people will overlook them and let you carry them almost anywhere.
  2. Tactical pens are difficult to pry from your tight grip because they fit almost entirely into the palm of your hand.
  3. You can write checks and sign documents on the fly or jot down notes about your most recent survival adventures.
  4. Tactical pens are a concealed weapon in your pocket and are extracted quickly without a lot of movement.
  5. They are ideal for attacking someone’s pressure points, and for twisting uncomfortably against bones.
  6. If someone commits a crime and steals off in a getaway vehicle, you can quickly scribble down their license plate on your hand before they getaway.
  7. Self defense pens get overlooked as a weapon in pat-downs.
  8. People rarely see a tactical pen attack coming – you have the element of surprise.
  9. If you need to break a window (for whatever reason), tactical pens are exceptionally efficient for this purpose.
  10. With some practice, they could make a decent projectile. I feel like that’s a stretch, though.

Using a Tactical pen for self-defense is easier than you might imagine.

Unlike most forms of martial arts weaponry, using this small weapon does not require you to memorize any complicated forms, hand-grabs or punching techniques (although knowing those would help you become proficient much faster).

“KILLER” TACTICAL PEN TECHNIQUES YOU SHOULD MASTER

The techniques are pretty simple and can be learned by anybody – but the key is practice.

Look up some internet videos and work with your friends.

As long as you are careful not to hurt each other, practicing these simple moves can be a lot of fun.

Even running through them a few times can significantly improve your ability to perform effectively when the time of need finally arrives.

Note: I’ll share a couple of short videos later in this article to help get you started.

Here are some general ways in which you can use a tactical pen:

Slashing

Pretty self-explanatory but the tactical pen can be used as a makeshift tactical knife or sword. It can be swung in a striking motion, down being the strongest move.

Although there’s no blade, the tactical pen will still do real damage when you connect with someone’s head. Especially with a solid over the shoulder swing.

Pressure Point Striking

This is a method that requires some background knowledge and practice. Pressure points can be debilitating when pinched or pressed.

If done right, it doesn’t take much force.

Knowing how to use your tactical pen to target these natural human weak spots gives you an incredible advantage against less knowledgeable attackers.

The tactical pen is a close-quarters weapon; you can’t do much damage at more than arm’s length distance.

However, close-range combat is how you get access to pressure points. If the opportunity is there, knowing the pressure points could save your life.

Check out this video on a few self-defense pressure points. The introduction is a bit long but worth the 5 minutes to watch.

Stabbing

This motion is obvious, but the best target locations might not be.

Aim for the eyes and if you connect the fight will come to an abrupt end.

Another vulnerable location is someone’s Adam apple. It’s really hard to keep fighting if you can’t see and/or breathe.

Here’s another short video showing a few self defense pen techniques to give you an idea of how powerful this weapon can be.

THE DO’S AND DON’S OF TACTICAL PENS

Things you SHOULD DO:

Carry One Or More

This is the kind of backup defense tool that you can store in lots of sneaky places to keep yourself safe at all times. Sure, you could carry just one tactical pen with you at all times.

Or you could get one for your bug out bag, one for your bug out vehicle, one for your office, one for your home, one for your survival cache, hell you could even keep a tactical pen in your survival medical kit.

Use Your Tactical Pen Creatively

There is no defined “right” or “wrong” way to use a self defense pen.

A “How To Use Tactical Pen For Dummies” does not exist.

So feel free to get creative and imagine unique ways you could use your tactical pen throughout your day.

Picture yourself in various self defense situations, or how you can retrieve your tactical pen covertly.

A creative survivalist is a survivalist who survives.

Thinking outside the box is incredibly important, and tactical pens can help you train your brain to think that way.

Practice With It Often

Could you pick up a guitar without ever done so and play a rock song? Your clumsy attempt at a song would probably sound similar to cats dying.

Some idea goes for all new skills, if you want to be any good at them you need to put in practice time.

Anyone can wield a self defense pen but there’s a big difference between randomly slashing and thrusting vs mastering it.

And while no one is saying you have to be a master, learning and practicing tactical pen basics will go a long way to preparing to defend yourself with it.

Things you SHOULD NOT DO:

Consider This Your Primary Weapon

No one has ever marched into battle armed with a jubilee of tactical pens.

They are never a primary weapon but they are the ideal last resort weapon.

Get Too Attached To It

Any incognito weapon is liable to get confiscated.

No matter whether it is a tactical pen, a cane sword, a sleeve pistol, anything that hides or disguises a weapon is a target for seizure.

Be careful where you bring your self defense pen, it is a weapon after all. There are places where it is downright unacceptable to carry a weapon on you.

And although it is a pen, it doesn’t exactly look like a regular pen, and if you get caught trying to sneak this weapon somewhere you’re not supposed to, there could be severe consequences for getting caught.

Expect The Pen To Write Flawlessly

In a pinch, where available weapons for self-defense are limited, using a regular pen is better than nothing.

But don’t practice tactical pen techniques and then go cheap and carry around a lame plastic ballpoint pen expecting it to function on the same level as the aircraft-grade aluminum weaponized tactical pens.

Standard pens don’t have the strength or durability to perform as those engineered by weapons manufacturers.

The bottom line is regular pens make poor self-defense tools.

Close Up Image Of The Word Advice

EVEN MORE TACTICAL PEN ADVICE

They’re not illegal, but they’re still a weapon.

So don’t use them as a toy, and don’t abuse their power.

You can seriously hurt someone just “messing around”. And I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, be careful where you bring your self defense pen.

Carrying one into a place like an airport could result in arrest and get you charged with conspiracy to commit a crime (whether those were your intentions or not).

Tactical pens are weapons, treat them as such.

Tactical pens are considered a non-lethal weapon.

That does not mean they can’t kill; it just means that they are not designed to.

Murder (even in the name of self-defense) is something you should avoid if possible.

Killing someone with a tactical pen would take a lot of effort. It won’t happen by accident, and it would be both gruesome and messy.

Also, it’s not something easily defended in a court appearance.

Tactical pens suck as far as pens go.

If you want a smooth, flawless ink implement to write your memoirs with, don’t rely on a self defense pen.

Tactical pens are more Kubotans than pens. Or more accurately they are 27% pen and 73% badass tactical weapon.

So don’t be surprised if the ink is of poor quality and it’s a bit hit or miss when writing.

Realize weapon companies make these and not pen companies.

Nobody looks menacing brandishing ANY pen.

Even a tactical one. Leave your ego at the door because you won’t scare off any attackers when you whip out your tactical pen and start thrusting it around and making tough guy sounds.

In fact, expect to draw a few chuckles from your assailants.

But use this to your advantage; when they think they are about to beat the living crap out of some pen-wielding-dink, their confidence will be high but their guard will be low.

Let them underestimate you and your tactical pen-abilities. It will be their downfall.

Don’t tell others your pen is tactical.

The best part of the tactical pen is its discretion.

Why then would you show a random drunkard at the bar your weapon? It’s a good practice to keep your self-defense weapons to yourself until you’re forced to use them.

StrikePen - A Badass Tactical Pen5 BEST TACTICAL PENS ON THE MARKET TODAY

Everyone want’s to know which is best. Once someone decides carrying a self defense pen makes sense, they want the best.

The key features to look for in the best tactical pen are:

  • Made Of Solid Alloy Construction
  • Well Designed Grip
  • The Pen Functions As A Pen

If the tactical pens feature has each of these qualities then it’s one of the best. You want it made from solid alloy to ensure it won’t break even under intense pressures.

The grip must be designed to prevent the pen from slipping in your hands when using it for self-defense.

The pen needs to be discrete and be an actual functioning pen. You also want the pen to have replaceable ink cartridges for long-term usage.

It’s also a nice bonus feature if it includes a carbide tip glass breaker.

After these hurdles have been met, the best tactical pen is one that is affordable and one you will carry every day.

Don’t let it collect dust: train with it.

If you buy a tactical pen, pop it in your tactical backpack and forget about it until the next time you get mugged, it is not going to do you much good.

You need to actively stay proficient with your weapon. Train with friends and practice alone.

The dual purpose of pen-and-weapon serves as the perfect disguise and allows users the element of surprise while also granting them the benefits of being armed and prepared for any situation.

Survival Gear Review – Streamlight ProTac HL-X

I remember the first “tactical” flashlight I bought. It was a flat dark earth Surefire G2 Nitrolon. Everyone I showed the flashlight to was amazed by how bright it was.  Before that, I had never even heard of “lumens.” Until then, the only flashlights we had around were huge D-cell Maglites or those 6-volt monstrosities the size of a tub of ice cream. Flashlights sure have come a long way in my lifetime.

By J. Bridger, Contributing Author to Survival Cache and SHTFblog.com

I’m not a huge fan of bolting things onto rifles, but a white LED light is definitely an exception. Finding a quality weapon light isn’t difficult; finding a quality weapon light that won’t break the bank is another story. If you’ve lusted after the multi-hundred dollar Surefire M600 Scout light but lack the Benjamins, you absolutely need to take a look at the $106 Streamlight ProTac HL-X.

My love affair with Streamlight began during my time at the fire department. We used the right angle Streamlight Survivor lights, and they kicked ass. The Survivors worked wet, they worked in freezing temperatures, they worked in 100°F+ temperatures, and they worked in the burn trailer the University would bring down. That burn trailer used propane-fueled fires for interior training and generated temps over 900°F . It gets hot. The Survivor lights took 6 AAs which only needed to be replaced every six months or so, if I remember correctly. They were very bright. I could illuminate the top of the grain elevator and count the buzzards at night from the bay doors, 100 yards down the block. Suffice it to say, I am a fan of Streamlight products! When I saw the ProTac HL-X, I had to have one for my rifle. From what I’ve seen so far, the quality is just as good as the tried and true Survivor lights.

What’s in the Box?

The ProTac HL-X is about 5.5” long, weighs 6.4 oz, and has a single picatinny mount for MIL-STD-1913 rails. The ProTac HL-X’s body is machined from aluminum and comes with two tail caps: One cap with a pressure switch, the other with a standard tailcap button. The kit comes with a pressure pad, a couple zip ties, snap on pressure pad retaining clips, Alan wrench, two screws, and an adhesive pad. The light is water resistant, but only for thirty minutes. Rain won’t hurt this light, but I wouldn’t swim with it. It does take up a good chunk of rail space. It can accept two CR123s or one 18650 battery. On high output, the Streamlight ProTac HL-X will run for 1.25 hrs, and on low, 23 hours.

Also read: Bugout Flashlight Wisdom

Streamlight uses the HL designation to mean “High Lumen.” These throw a wide beam pattern, increasing your situational awareness. Tip: If you want to see less of what’s around you and more of what’s downrange, try their HPL series lights. The ProTac HL-X is 1,000 lumens (27,600 Candela), and Streamlight reports it can throw a beam 332 meters. 1,000 lumens is a lot of output, and in my experience, really is too much for indoor use. I think this Streamlight really shines as an outdoor light (pun intended).

One of the things I love about this light is the TEN-TAP programming. I like my EDC lights to have a high and low setting, but I think a WML should have just one setting: brighter than shit. I’m not a big fan of low, “SOS,” or strobes, so I really appreciate being able to get rid of those. There are 3 available programs: High-strobe, High, and Low-High. To cycle through the available programs, tap the button 9 times in quick succession and hold it on the tenth time. Voila. You can do this with the tail cap or the pressure switch.

Real-World Trials With The Streamlight Protac HL-X

I tried the ProTac HL-X out on a snowy morning before the sun came up to see how far it’d throw a beam. At 25 yards, this light is positively blinding. Same at 50 yards. At 100 yards, you would still have zero problem identifying your target. At 200 yards, you would be able to see what you’re looking at, but I think this is where it starts to get dicey. You may be able to see a person at this distance, but are your eyes good enough to make out their intentions at night? Or can you tell a dog from a coyote? You may need a magnified optic, but it certainly will throw light that far. I use a 50/200 zero on my AR, so this is just about perfect for me.

Related: Survival Gear Review: Streamlight TLR-3

The light adds a little weight to the front of the gun, but it’s barely noticeable. A 3 o’clock mount isn’t my favorite spot, but I like it better than 6 o’clock. At 6 o’clock the shadow it casts from my suppressor covers up the 12 o’clock position on a target. What the hands are doing is probably more important than faces, but I’d still like to be able to ID someone if I had to.

I can’t speak for any other calibers these crazy kids are shooting these days, but 5.56 NATO recoil doesn’t bother the Streamlight ProTac HL-X at all. It never flickered or malfunctioned, even being in close proximity to the muzzle of my LWRC. I’m not surprised; this isn’t my first WML from Streamlight. (I also have a TLR-1 HL mounted on a Glock 19, and is a hell of a light! ) As I said before, on full power, this light may be too bright for indoor use. There is definitely some technique involved in using a light “tactically” to avoid blinding yourself, especially if you’ve just woken up. I can say from experience, its perfect for “in the yard” distance engagements with coyotes and skunks. For the casual shooter on a budget or a professional in need of a solid high-performance weapon mounted light, you can install the Streamlight Protac HL-X light and not think twice. You can rest assured it will turn on when you need it.

Tracking, a Valuable Skill for Preppers

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of articles by guest author Kyt Lyn Walken on tracking and its applicability to prepping. — Wild Bill

Tracking. Maybe you heard about it from your grandfather or father during hunting season. Or you noticed it in some scenes from The Walking Dead series. Perhaps you’re a fan of Westerns and are familiar with Indian scouts bent to the ground, analyzing the terrain to gather information.

“Learning to read signs enables everyone to choose a safe route in life, staying safe and avoiding danger.”

John “Lofty” Wiseman, author of “SAS Survival Handbook”

Tracking is the art and science of identifying, following and interpreting human and animal tracks and signs. Basically, it’s about studying and comprehending the reaction of each type of surface to the passage of men and animals.

Primitive art, modern skill

This primitive art, founded on a process which involves both observation and deduction, is still alive. In times of crises and catastrophes, tracking takes on a special value. Tracking has been (and continues to be) successfully employed in search and rescue, law enforcement, border operations, and forensic science. But tracking can be applied to civilian life, too.

“Learning to read signs enables everyone to choose a safe route in life, staying safe and avoiding danger.” This quote, from John “Lofty” Wiseman (former Special Air Service) seems to fit perfectly, even in 2020. A tracker is not necessarily a fan of old times, but rather lives in the present, putting situational awareness above all. Through the use of this art, a tracker is able to collect information and have a clear picture in mind.

Tracking isn’t a topic you can learn in one or two days but, once acquired, it will serve you faithfully all your life. And in emergency situation, it might even save your life.

You cannot read one book, add ego, stir in some ignorance, and come up with a tracker.

A.B. Taylor

Observation means selection. If you know where to look and what to look for, you will become proficient in getting all the details you need to understand if anyone has come onto your property, as an example.

During hunting season, you will have a better chance of successfully tracking your prey. If you find yourself lost in the middle of a hike and your GPS batteries are dead, tracking can help you follow your own footprints and safely return to your car.

These are but a few examples. However, learning this art requires time, patience, passion and dedication. AB Taylor, a well-known tracker and former Border Patrol Agent, used to say: “You cannot read one book, add ego, stir in some ignorance, and come up with a tracker. No, this sounds more like the ingredients of an incident commander to me.”

Practice makes perfect

This is absolutely true. If you miss out, you mess up. That’s my personal consideration of it. The best teacher of learning how to read and follow tracks is experience, there is no other way around it. Practice, especially side-by-side with an expert tracker and in all kinds of weather conditions, will help you to gain more confidence in what you do.

Kyt Walken points out some sign

You may be surprised by how you will become even more selective and inquisitive in your everyday life. The tracker is, tout court, a detective. In a worst-case scenario, the new inclination of your modus operandi will play a big difference, not only in reading tracks, but also in understanding the personality of people, their habits, and learning to foretell their actions.

In upcoming articles we will look at the effective application of this art as applied to preparedness.

Hezbollah To Be Unleashed Inside America? We Are Being Warned That Sleeper Cells “Can Hit Targets On U.S. Soil At Anytime Without Warning”

There has never been a greater threat of terror attacks on U.S. soil than there is right now.  In the aftermath of the killing of Iranian military chief Qassem Soleimani, top Iranian leaders are vowing revenge.  Many of the talking heads on television are speculating that Iran may hit American targets in the Middle East, but what they are forgetting is that Iranian-backed terror groups already have a substantial presence in North America.  In particular, Hezbollah has been involved in the North American drug trade for a very long time.  Over the years, the mainstream media gave Al-Qaeda and ISIS a lot of attention, but the truth is that Hezbollah is far better funded and far better armed than either of those groups ever were, and now the man at the top of the military food chain that gave Hezbollah their marching orders has been killed by the United States.  If Hezbollah sleeper cells are ever going to be unleashed in the United States, now is the time when it will happen.

Of course U.S. officials clearly understand that there is a threat.  As Paul Joseph Watson has noted, authorities in New York and Los Angeles are both ramping up security…

The threat posed by Iran-backed Hezbollah sleeper cells embedded in major American cities has once again come to the fore following the killing of Iran’s Quds Force General Qasem Soleimani.

Following last night’s assassination of the Iranian military leader, authorities in both New York and Los Angeles announced that they were ramping up security in readiness for possible revenge attacks on U.S. soil.

This is because Iran is known to have placed Hezbollah terrorist sleeper cells throughout not just Europe but the United States too.

And one former CIA officer is warning that we need to be operating under the assumption that Hezbollah sleeper cells “can hit targets on U.S. soil at anytime without warning”

Former CIA operations officer, Sam Faddis, warned that Hezbollah sleeper cells were hiding in the U.S. and potentially had targets in its sights.

‘It is more than possible that Hezbollah has sleeper cells in the United States ready to strike,’ Faddis told DailyMail.com.

‘Based on what we know we must assume they do and that they can hit targets on U.S. soil at anytime without warning.’

Up until now, Iranian leaders such as Soleimani have always held back their proxies from committing terror attacks on U.S. soil because the Iranians knew that it would potentially spark a full-blown war with the United States.

But now that Soleimani is dead and war is virtually a certainty, there would appear to be no reason to hold back any longer.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio rarely makes any sense at all, but for once I have to agree with him.  During a press conference on Friday, he told reporters that we are “in a de facto state of war”

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said they would be protecting key locations from ‘any attempt by Iran or its terrorist allies to retaliate against the U.S.’

‘We have to assume this action puts us in a de facto state of war,’ he told a press conference on Friday.

It comes amid fears that the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group, which has been designated by the U.S. government as a foreign terrorist organization, may have sleeper cells in the U.S. that are ready to retaliate.

And he is right.

In particular, the Iranians and their proxies are going to be looking for high value targets to strike, and there are certainly a lot of them in New York.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that something will happen there, but it is definitely a possibility.

And we do know that Hezbollah has previously “plotted to attack U.S. interests inside the country”

Last year, the criminal prosecution and conviction in New York of the Hezbollah operative Ali Kourani revealed that the terror outfit has already plotted to attack U.S. interests inside the country and is ready to activate if it considers the existence of either Hezbollah or Iran to be at stake.

Following the arrest of Kourani and another Hezbollah operative named Samer el-Debek, the U.S. intelligence community reversed its belief that Hezbollah was unlikely to attempt attacks within the U.S.

“It’s our assessment that Hezbollah is determined to give itself a potential homeland option as a critical component of its terrorism playbook,” said National Counterterrorism Center Director Nicholas Rasmussen.

Unfortunately, a lot of Americans don’t understand the seriousness of what we are potentially facing.

Hezbollah is made up of the most radical Shiite terrorists on the entire planet.

These are the guys that ISIS and Al-Qaeda are afraid of.

Of all the terror groups in existence, Hezbollah is the most competent and the most frightening of them all.

In addition to terror attacks, it is being reported that the Trump administration is also deeply concerned about the possibility of cyberattacks.

The Iranians and their proxies are probably not as advanced in this area as Russia, China and North Korea are, but we do know that they have been building up a “cyber army”

Analysts believe Tehran has stepped up its capacity to attack key Western cyber infrastructure and has even built up a so-called “cyber army” that pledges allegiance to the Islamic Republic.

Loic Guezo, head of French information security group Clusif, said Iran’s cyber attacks above all sought to damage industrial targets such as dams or power stations.

“What is feared here is the impact on society — electricity cuts, poisoning, gas leaks, explosions, transport chaos and hospitals,” he told AFP.

So at some point your power may go out, and you may not even realize that the Iranians are behind it.

If and when the Iranians and their proxies start hitting us, it is going to cause a lot of panic.  America is totally unprepared for what is coming, and our enemies are going to take full advantage of that fact.

The Iranians and their proxies don’t fight clean and their don’t fight fair.

Getting into a fight with them won’t be pretty, and when it erupts a whole lot of people are likely to end up dead.

How To Build A Root Cellar From The Ground Up For Survival

How To Build A Root CellarFiguring out how to build a root cellar is not a new trick.

In fact, it’s an ancient one.

It’s one of the oldest survival tricks in the book.

But is utilizing the earth for refrigeration still necessary?

In America, there’s an appliance called a refrigerator, duh!?

Our $3,000 stainless refrigerators and chest freezers take care of ALL our food preservation needs, right?

Plus, we have an overabundance of reliable power to run those things forever, everyone knows that.

No one needs to (or cares to) store their food underground anymore, right?

WRONG.

I care and you should too.

So today we’re going to cover the following “How To Build A Root Cellar” topics in detail:

WHY ROOT CELLARS STILL MATTER

When humans discovered they could increase the shelf life of their food by storing it underground; society was revolutionized.

All of a sudden, humans had the ability to preserve grain, nuts, fresh fruit and vegetables for longer periods of time.

Now immediate food consumption was no longer necessary; having to gorge on it all before it went bad.

Instead, we could now stockpile and preserve our harvests in root cellars to prepare for the lean winter months.

It’s the technology that frontier families used to maintain a healthy diet and avoid starvation during harsh cold winters.

But wait, don’t refrigerators do that nowadays? Yes, but with one big difference – refrigerators depend on electricity.

This makes refrigerators very convenient – until you lose power.

So convenient in fact, that our society has all but lost this old technology, knowledge, and know-how.

Which is a damn shame because there are so many reasons why a backup supply of healthy food is extremely useful – even, dare I say, life-saving.

Be it a massive wildfire, contagious disease, worldwide financial collapse, or an EMP strike.

If any of these horrible events are bad enough, and last long enough, having a backup food preservation system may evolve from a fun hobby to a survival necessity.

And while having a backyard root cellar is not a guarantee of survival success, not have one may lead to your starvation.

This ancient survival technique may separate those who thrive from those who perish in a “shit-hits-the-fan” scenario.

So a root cellar is an excellent off-grid food preservation system. It’s pretty much a requirement for anyone who’s concerned about losing grid power for good…

If you’re serious about being prepared for anything, you need to add a root cellar to your lifestyle.

But building a root cellar is not a quick project and one you shouldn’t rush.

You need to take your time for proper planning. Because if you don’t, chances are good that you’ll make mistakes. And food storage mistakes can jeopardize all of your food stockpiling efforts.

HOW UNDERGROUND FOOD STORAGE WORKS

Root cellars ALL have one thing in common. They take advantage of stable underground temperatures! Why underground? It all has to do with the seasonal variation in temperatures.

>As you dig down into the earth, the layers of soil between you and the surface act as a blanket.  insulator from the surface.

For example, in the hot summer, underground temps are much cooler than the surface.

In the winter, a few feet underground is much warmer than a howling blizzard outside.
And you don’t need to dig far to get the benefits…

In fact, most U.S. regions, at just 10 feet under the surface, you’ll find constantly cool 50-60 degree, soil temps.

US-ground-temps

Approximate Soil Temps At 10 Feet Underground

>A root cellar takes advantage of these stable cool temperatures.
And temperature control is an important component in prolonging the shelf life of perishable foods.

Because we all know that cool temperatures extend our perishable food’s shelf life.

For proof of this, just leave your milk out on the counter all afternoon in the summer. Near-instant spoilage, while that same milk will last weeks in a cool refrigerator.

A root cellar is a nature’s refrigerator. Without the need for chemical refrigerants or electricity.

And that’s the simple beauty of underground food storage, it extends your foods shelf life without depending on modern technologies.

But, there’s a bit more to it than that…

Using the earth’s lower temperatures is smart, but there are unique challenges you’ll need to overcome to do so successfully.

2 MAIN TYPES OF DIY ROOT CELLARS

Depending on your time, energy, and funds, there are two main types of root cellars to choose from: small and large.

Small underground food storage systems primarily consist of buried containers, while larger setups typically include a separate building.

So let’s start with the quick, down, and dirty option first; the small buried root cellar container.

The Small Buried Root Cellar Container

This option is similar to burying a survival cache.

But instead of storing gear and equipment, with this option, your focusing on storing food.

Remember, anything stored underground at a depth of several feet will stay at a consistently cool temperature between 50-55-degrees F (regionally dependent).

The best containers for this method are the ones not susceptible to water damage or degradation.

Naturally, that eliminates wood crates or cardboard boxes because, over the course of time, natural processes will eat away at these containers and eventually devour whatever’s inside.

Instead, use metal garbage cans, plastic drums or plastic storage totes are the best options.

Just make sure the container is made out of strong materials to prevent collapse and won’t degrade when in contact with moisture for extended periods of time.

This straightforward method of underground food storage is the easiest on a tight budget. It’s also the quickest to achieve, and acquiring materials is not difficult.

It’s also the closest method to the original root cellar!

When Indians and native Australians buried their foods, they did so in clay pots but they surely would have used waterproof plastic containers if available. But for them, plastic was still centuries away.

Note: if you live in freezing climates, expect your buried food container to be inaccessible during the cold months. When the ground freezes, it becomes difficult or nearly impossible to dig it back up.

Also, extremely low temperatures present a liability for sealed containers; anything stored in a jar, can, or bottle will likely freeze and burst its container. Food for thought!

Here are 2 small root cellar container videos. The first is utilizing large plastic drum barrels while the second one repurposes a broken refrigerator.

The limitations to these smaller containers become obvious once you want to expand your underground food storage supply.

Plus, digging them back up on a regular basis to check on your food and rotate your foods are (more details later) it’s going to be a royal pain.

So if you want a single large root cellar as opposed to lots of smaller ones, you need a larger walk-in backyard root cellar.

One you can fill to the brim with food and wait for the worst.

The Backyard DIY Root Cellar

A walk-in style root cellar is a step up from buried caches. But they do require a bit more time and money.

Here’s a quick overview of how to build a root cellar and how it should function once complete.

Easy Cellar

Note: One of the most affordable backyard root cellar systems I’ve come across is called Easy Cellar.

It’s a backyard root cellar design you can build for only $400!

The good news is constructing a backyard root cellar is the kind of project that supports you during a large-scale disaster.

Because if having a couple of barrels full of buried food is good; having a large room full of survival food is even better.

HOW TO BUILD A ROOT CELLAR /  DIY ROOT CELLAR PLANS

How to Build A Root Cellar

With so many kinds of root cellars, there are plenty of great instructional videos online. We spent time reviewing them to find the best to give you an idea of how to get started.

It’s worth checking out how to build several different kinds. Then take the best ideas to fit your particular situation.

Remember, there are no absolutes in the design of a root cellar. Feel free to mix and match styles, sizes, and construction techniques. That’s the best way to end up the perfect DIY root cellar for YOU!

With that said, let’s go for the gold medal right off the bat! This “hobbit hole” root cellar is a work of art. This video shows off some of the craftsmanship that went into building it.

In particular, I like the vaulted ceiling and the detail work in the door and door frame. Not only will it store a huge amount of food, but it also looks great nestled into the landscape at the edge of your yard.

O.K., perhaps the hobbit hole is a little too decorative for you. Check out this “earthbag” construction method instead.

It can produce a similar result with a much more utilitarian design. Plus, aside from the excavation, earthbags don’t require as much specialized knowledge to build. It’s not a skilled trade like masonry or bricklaying.

With no fancy arches and a straightforward log roof, this is all pure function.

Of course, not everyone has the space (or the need) for such a large root cellar. In fact, an array of smaller root cellars can keep your produce separated. This also helps reduce the risk that one event can take out your entire supply.

Imagine having a few of these simple garbage can root cellars on your property. They can also act as secret food caches and make sense around a bug out location!

Finally, if you have an unheated basement with plenty of space, you can always build an indoor root cellar. This is often the most convenient option out there since you don’t have to go outside to get your produce!

This root cellar building project is extremely well documented. They take you from measuring for rough lumber to building walls. They even go over insulating and installing ventilation.

Remember, you can tweak the details of any of the designs to fit your specific needs.

Such as, how many people do you need to supply? Which types of products you’re most likely to use? How much total volume you need for storage, and your build costs and DIY skills?

Get a realistic picture of the interaction between all these variables. This can help narrow down the best root cellar design for you.

In order to successfully build a root cellar, you must start with the end in mind. You can’t just grab a shovel and start digging.

Well..actually you can, but trust me, you’ll soon regret that approach. Instead, you’ll meet all your goals and get what you want with the right root cellar plan!

Here are the following root cellar issues you need to think long and hard about before breaking ground.

Consider Your Budget

Obviously, the size of your wallet is going to play a significant factor in determining the size and quality of your food storage cellar.

If you have the means to go “all-out” on this project, then go for it. Purchase the best materials, build it on your own land, and make it as big as possible.

What better way to spend your money, than on important survival projects?

But, if you are like me and severely confined by your bank account, then you’ll have to make compromises.

So I’ll do my best to suggest some cheaper alternatives. Some corners are cut-able, while others are not. Keep this in mind as we move forward.

Digging The Hole – Excavation

Underground storage is, by definition, buried in the ground.

So the first step to building your big survival pantry is digging a hole for it. This hole can be underneath your house, in your backyard, out in the woods, or even in a secret spot in the middle of the desert.

But wherever it ultimately ends up, follow this advice: the deeper the better.

Not only are deeply dug root cellars easier to conceal, but they provide cooler food storage temperatures.

So decide how large an area you want and start digging!

Use a shovel if you must, but ideally, an excavating machine will do the heavy lifting, but again, your budget will determine what’s possible.

Laying The Foundation

If you have the money to pour a concrete floor, DO IT! Otherwise, use the flattest stones you can find in the surrounding area.

One rock at a time and you’ll eventually have a rustic looking floor.

Wooden boards can also be used to achieve the same effect.

The reason why you want a solid floor is twofold: first, having a solid floor helps prevent rodents from burrowing through the floor, and second, it makes a smooth surface to set up racking or shelving systems.

Building The Root Cellar Walls

Once again, if you can afford bricks or masonry blocks for walls then you should use them.

Otherwise, similar to the foundation of your cellar, look for the materials for your walls in free resources in the surrounding area.

Stacking stones is a straightforward task (although it often requires some heavy lifting).

You can use mud or clay as a natural mortar to hold each stone in place.

Having strong stone walls prevents unwanted pests from gaining entry to your food storage facility, and it also helps keep the place as cool as possible.

Adding A Ventilation Pipe

All root cellars require ventilation, no exceptions.

You must turn over the air within the room to keep ethylene gas buildup in check. The good news is this is relatively straightforward.

Just add a vertical PVC pipe to somewhere within the structure that will stick out above the roof. Then add a second pipe near the floor that will draw fresh outside air into the storage space.

Capping The Ceiling / Laying The Roof

The best way to cap your root cellar is to pour a concrete slab over the top. You’ll need to support the roof fully from underneath before you pour.

However, pouring concrete will set you back some dollars. An alternative option is to lay treated 2×4’s across the top of your cellar, and then bury them under the dirt you dug out of the hole in step 1.

Of course, using materials that won’t degrade as fast as wood is preferable, but will undoubtedly cost more. If you go with the 2×4’s make sure you used treated lumber as it will hold up to rot much longer.

Just know it’s definitely a shortcut, but it’s simple, cheap, and effective at camouflaging your underground food structure.

Sealing Up Your Root Cellar

Make sure you fill and seal all doors jams and ceiling gaps. Gaps allow bugs, insects, and vermin into your food storage space. Not good.

Installing Doors and Locks

The reasons for these are obvious. You need to be able to close and lock the place up when you’re not around.

So invest in a quality Rustoleum hanging lock to keep your food stockpile yours.

So now it’s time to begin the actual building of your own DIY root cellar. But having a set of proven root cellar blueprints are going to make your life a lot easier.

That’s why we recommend you check out The Easy Cellar plan. It’s the easiest backyard root cellar build we’ve come across.

Sure it’s a bit of an investment – but you’ll save a bundle with the right set of DIY root cellar plans. Why? By preventing you from making costly mistakes!

WHAT YOUT SHOULD STORE IN YOUR ROOT CELLAR

What you store in your cellar depends on your goals.

If your goal is to stash long-term survival foods, then build a cellar large enough to handle what you have today and what you may want to add to it over the years.

But what about fresh produce and vegetables from the garden? You should also make certain to design enough room for these seasonal items as well.

Non-perishables Are Your Friend

Whether it is canned, jarred, dehydrated, dried, or tubed, you’re good to go. The further away from the expiration date, the better.

You should learn how to making pemmican for long-term protein needs and how to make hardtack for your long-term carbs needs.

The more foods that are non-perishable that you can afford to store in your cellar, the better off you will be for any future emergencies (big or small).

Add Some Fresh Stuff Too

You can store fresh produce if you’re willing to regularly maintain them. You’ll need to understand the humidity and temperature level and you’ll need to consume the produce each year before the next crop gets stored.

There’s a particular technique for storing these kinds of foods, because of the chemical byproducts they release.

Here’s a helpful chart that provides ideal root cellar storage temperature and humidity levels for various varieties of produce.

Root Cellar Vegetable Temps and Humidity Levels

Survival Food vs. Fresh Garden Produce?

I think it’s safe to assume if you’re interested in underground food storage, then you’re interested in self-reliance. Preserving your food harvests all winter long without electricity is about as self-reliant as it gets.

But there’s a conflict of interest between long-term survival food kits and fresh fruits and veggies. Any guess on what the conflict is?

It’s humidity. Moisture in the air.

With long-term dry survival foods, the last thing you want is humidity in the air. You should do everything possible to avoid moisture touching your freeze-dried survival food. Even going so far as to add a high-quality dehumidifier to your food storage area.

But with harvested fruits and vegetables you’re trying to keep fresh through a single winter season, you want the opposite. You want a relatively high humidity (as much as 90%).

This high humidity keeps your produce from drying out. Helping to keep your stashed harvest both fresh and nutritious.

As we discussed in the previous section, all foods last longer in cooler temps. So the cool air of underground food storage is ideal for both survival food and garden produce. So what’s a self-reliant person to do?

The way I see it you have a couple of options.

Option 1 – Don’t Store Your Freeze Dried or Dehydrated Survival Food In Your Root Cellar

Whether you bought it or used a freeze-drying machine; freeze-dried food is not cheap. That’s why you might not want to store it in your underground food storage system. Instead, only store your annually harvested produce there.

That way, you can crank up your humidity levels without fear of affecting your freeze-dried survival foods. But you’ll have to find a separate location for your long-term survival foods like your basement.

Option 2 – Create Separate Areas Within Your Root Cellar

Create separate containers or areas within your root cellars specifically designed for high or low humidity environments.

This eliminates having two separate storage locations but complicates the constructing and storing process. Especially, for a single large underground food storage building.

Option 3 – Use Mylar Bags For Your Survival Food

Put your survival food in sealed Mylar bags with desiccants and then put these bags into food-grade sealed buckets.

This double seal setup should keep the rooms high humidity environment from ever touching your long-term survival foods.

I think Option 3 is the best, but ultimately it’s up to you.

How To Control The Humidity

First of all, relatively high humidity is essential in root cellar storage.

A refrigerator produce bin holds the humidity somewhere between 90 and 95 percent. This high humidity is ideal for leafy greens and root crops. This prevents these foods from drying out and wilting.

Now underground soil temps in your area; are what they are. So there’s no way to control that.

But you can control the humidity levels using ventilation and adding moisture as needed.

If you have good ventilation and airflow you can keep the humidity of a room relatively stable. Ventilation controls the flow of air and thereby the humidity of the room.

Now regardless of whether you want high humidity (for produce) or low humidity (for long-term dried foods and meats) your storage system must have ventilation.

Without ventilation, a room with fresh produce will fill up with a gas called Ethylene. Ethylene is released naturally from stored produce and without ventilation, it will build up and accelerate the spoilage process.

So the best way to control humidity in a root cellar is by installing ventilation, and then adding moisture as needed.

One way to add moisture is to plan the root cellar floor with gravel instead of a full concrete pad. This allows you to take a hose or buckets of water and dump them on the floor.

Another way is by spreading damp burlap sacks over the produce.

Either way, the additional water will slowly evaporate up into the air. This evaporation process adds humidity.

However, I highly recommend using a hygrometer to ensure that it doesn’t become TOO humid.

Why? If the humidity approaches 100% and the temps fall, moisture will start condensing. Wet produce is far more susceptible to spoiling.

So there you go. You install a simple PVC vent pipe to create ventilation and then bring in water for adding humidity.

The PVC vent system consists of two PVC pipes. One installed close to the floor and goes through the wall to the outside while the other one is installed near the top of the cellar and exits through the roof.

The natural chimney effect will pull air out of the room from the roof pipe and the floor pipe will bring fresh air in. Simple ventilation without electricity.

So now that you have a basic understanding of the concepts of a root cellar, and hopefully have an idea of how you want to utilize yours, it’s time to start thinking about construction.

DESIGNING THE INTERIOR SPACE OF A ROOT CELLAR

An efficient and usable space requires a fair amount of forethought.

You can’t just toss your food supplies in a haphazard heap and expect good outcomes. Believe it or not, there is actually a science to packing your underground food storage.

First up is deciding how to keep everything organized. Are you going to use boxes, plastic tubs or shelves?

Honestly, it doesn’t matter as long as you’re using separation to organize your underground food supply. Let’s discuss each option further.

Food Shelving Racks

These are easy to build and fully maximize your available space. You can get premade shelving kits online. Just buy and assemble.

Or you can buy the raw materials and build them yourself. The biggest benefit of building them yourself is being able to customize them to fit your space perfectly.

Food Boxes and Tubs

Storing your food on the shelf is a good first step, but organizing them get’s a lot easier when you use boxes or tubs.

I like to use clear plastic bins so I can see the food and produce that’s in them without having to empty it.

Under no circumstance use cardboard due to humidity breaking down the paper.

Note: make sure you don’t seal up your fresh produce bins. You can put veggies in boxes, bins or tubs, just don’t put a lid on it.

Otherwise, the ethylene gas will get trapped.

ROOT CELLAR FOOD ORGANIZATION ADVICE

This step is one that is often overlooked but is paramount to extending the life of your underground food storage cellar. Keeping everything elevated (on shelves or supports or pallets) to prevent any unwanted water damage.

But beyond this, it’s really important to keep the fruits and veggies stored in specific places.

Fresh fruits and vegetables (especially tomatoes, apples, and pears) produce that ripening agent we talked about called ethylene.

This chemical byproduct speeds up the decomposition of other produce. Basically, it makes everything fresh start to rot faster, and it’s a major problem that can result in a lot of food waste.

The easiest way to mitigate this issue (besides avoiding storing fresh produce to start with) is to:

  1. Keep the foods that produce ethylene at the very top of the cellar. The higher the better. This will help prevent the chemical agent from infecting your other foods.
  2. Have a good ventilation system as we discussed earlier.

Also, some produce stores better when it is cured at 80-90-degree F temperatures for around 10 days before being placed in storage.

A few examples of these foods are garlic, winter squash, onions, and potatoes. If you plan to store these consider taking the time to cure it before adding it to your underground root cellar.

Food items require colder temperatures should be stored at the bottom of your cellar.

Amazingly, there will be a significant temperature difference between the top of your cellar and the bottom. Often a big enough difference to keep food cold when it is stored flat on the ground.

Any canned items or jars with metal lids are in danger of rusting. Even if you monitor the temp/humidity very carefully, rusted cans are bad news.

Rust can compromise the seal on lids and thereby compromise the food inside. To prevent this, store all-metal containers in sealed plastic mylar bags (vacuum seals are ideal).

5 DANGEROUS ROOT CELLAR ENEMIES

Every survival project has its own unique obstacles. And when it comes to storing food underground in root cellars there are 5 such challenges.

You must prepare to deal with these obstacles before putting your root cellar food storage system to the ultimate test.

1 – Bacteria

Actually, some bacteria are good for you, like the stuff found in probiotic yogurts. But when storing your food underground bacteria is always the bad sort.

If you allow any bacteria to fester in your root cellar stockpile it will introduce food rot.

However, you can mitigate bacteria by keeping your food stored in clean containers and removing any food showing the first signs of decay.

2 – Fungi

Many mushrooms are delicious, while others are used for a “good” time. Still, others are poisonous (and potentially deadly).

But all varieties are bad if they spontaneously sprout on survival food.

You need to keep a careful watch on you’re food for any fungal growth.

3 – Insects

Food with insect infestation can be a horrible and even traumatic experience.

Not only is it totally gross, but it may require you to throw everything out.

Once ants, beetles, maggots, flies, moths, or any other creepy crawly gets in, they will quickly infest everything they can. So keep these insects away at all costs.

We’ll get into insect repellant and eradication methods later…

4 – Vermin

Rats, mice, raccoons, squirrels, or any animal with a nose and appetite for garbage; loves free food.

So use traps and hard-sided containers with tight seals for your underground food storage site. Otherwise, a significant portion of it may get snatched by uninvited pests.

5 – People

Perhaps the most frustrating challenge of all is other humans. People love food and they love buried treasure.

It is a combination that puts your underground stash of food in severe danger.

How awful would it be to visit your root cellar to find it’s been completely raided? Talk about brutal.

So later on, we’ll discuss in detail a few camouflaging techniques to prevent this from happening. But it’s also important to keep the location of any survival cache (be it full of food, or equipment, or relevant documents) a secret.

HOW TO HIDE YOUR ROOD CELLAR

This is an essential step!

Just dropping off a bunch of food in the middle of the woods is not enough to protect it from motivated intruders.

Camouflaging helps keep your food hidden from people and animals alike, so it’s a vital step to protecting your survival goods.

Depending on which method of food storage you decided to go with, there will be different levels of work involved in hiding your food.

If you just buried a big plastic drum, then it might be as easy as laying dirt, grass, twigs, pinecones, and whatever else looks natural over the top.

But if you have a full-fledged root cellar that needs disguising, you may need to get more creative.

For bigger structures, you should plant trees shrubs and other plants that grow in the area around your structure.

On top of this, make sure you bury it well, and the surrounding areas look natural.

Bigger storage facilities are harder to camouflage, but as I said at the beginning of this section: this step is essential!

So do not skimp out.

If your food supply is out of sight of potential thieves, it is certainly out of mind too.

MAINTAINING YOUR ROOT CELLAR FOOD SUPPLY

Depending on how much of your food is non-perishable, and how large your supply of food is, will determine how much maintenance is required.

If you have lots of fresh foods stored or foods that expire rather quickly, then you’ll need to make regular supply/maintenance trips to ensure timely use and rotation.

That’s the biggest regular task of owning a food supply. Making sure you trade out expiring food for new food.

Keep an eagle eye on your expiration dates is important because contracting a severe case of food poisoning in a survival situation, your chances of survival sink like a ship.

A case of food poisoning makes it difficult to ingest the essential nutrients and vitamins and can lead to severe dehydration and even death by starvation.

To help prevent any spoilage, you should build a spreadsheet and label everything. Then keep the spreadsheet handy inside your food container/cellar and invest in a good labeler.

Regular maintenance also includes:

  • Checking seals on doors and walls to ensure that they have not been broken or chewed.
  • Monitoring temperature and humidity, restocking food that has been used or thrown out, checking the locks for rust and degradation, cleaning out triggered mouse/rat traps and flypaper.
  • Also, make sure after multiple maintenance trips to your food storage site, you are not carving out a trail.

However, this regular maintenance can compromise all your camouflage efforts. Since now there’s basically a line that leads straight to your food stash.

So always take unique routes to your underground food storage location and consciously work to cover up your own tracks around the burial site.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Burying food in an underground container or facility is a survival method that human beings have been employing for thousands of years.

This way of preserving food has saved countless lives from starvation since its inception. And it’s still entirely applicable today.

Building your own survival food cache is both useful in times of calm and essential in times of chaos.

There is no telling what situation might force you to need your buried stash of food, but no matter what it is, having a backup supply of food essential in today’s fragile and uncertain times.
