As I think back to the adventures my family and I have taken some of my best memories have come from our early days. We used to live on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. This island has some of the best beaches in the world right next to some very tall mountains.
Snorkeling was one of my favorite weekend getaways. I loved watching those gorgeous tropical fish in their underwater world. Seeing the fish and the coral reefs was beautiful and I am so glad that we had the opportunity to see it in person.
On our next visit we plan on snorkeling but we will definitely be doing some things differently. In addition to our best masks, flippers, gloves, knives and snorkels we will be bringing some newer and very important pieces of safety and survival gear with us.
Cell phones – Cell phones will be coming with us to call for help when we need it as well as a portable solar battery charger to make sure that the phone stays charged for the day. The ocean is beautiful but it does have its hazards; rip currents, sharks, and sudden large waves being just a few of the glitches that can occur. While we won’t be bringing them in the water with us they will be in our gear bags.
Cameras-We also plan to preserve those memories with better cameras, having one for both pictures of the land and an underwater camera is a priority. Since we will be taking many pictures having an extra flash card and a portable battery charger along is also a good idea. I love remembering the view of the coral reefs and the tropical fish and preserving those memories to share with others would just enhance the underwater experience. Cameras are clearly not needed for survival on the beach but when you get home and have no pictures to share with friends and family…well let’s just say you should bring one and take pictures.
An Alarm-Another piece of survival gear that I would bring along with me is something that can get attention when I cannot. The ocean can be very loud and after being tossed by a few large waves it is very difficult to speak for a few minutes. If you can’t speak, call out, or are out of breath or can’t breathe and are in distress the alarm will alert others in the area that you that you need help. I suppose I should thank the people that have invented the cell phone, the portable solar chargers, the portable alarms and survival gear; they are exceptional additions to our lifestyle, our survival and our peace of mind.
