An Every Day Carry kit (EDC) is simply a small collection of useful tools that you carry with you whenever you are away from home. It doesn’t have the lofty status of the bug out bag but it is just as important. It consists of only the most basic items that you need when you are reacting to situations in your daily life.
Many people keep most of their EDC equipment in a small discrete bag such as a Versipack so that they don’t have bulging pockets, and also so they can get to their gear faster. These small packs are great if you have a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) or if you carry fairly large items such as a Nalgene Water Bottle.
One of the easiest ways to carry your smallest gear with you wherever you go is to have a bunch of it on your key ring. Having some of your gear there will give you speedy access to some of your most useful items.
Some of the things that can go on an EDC key ring are:
- Small multi-tools such as the Leatherman Squirt.
- A small lighter such as a split pea lighter.
- A small flashlight such as the Photon Micro-Light.
- A small pocket knife such as the Victorinox Swiss Army MiniChamp.
- A can opener like the P-38.
- A Bison container with water purification tablets.
- A small pry bar such as the Widgy Bar.
- A True Utility Cashstash Cash Capsule for emergency cash.
- A SERE Pocket Saw
- A pen like the True Utility Telepen Telescopic Pen.
- A whistle.
- Fingernail clippers.
That is a lot of stuff for a key ring and I am in no way saying that you will need all of it…these are only suggestions. You need to figure out which items you will really need and add only those. Ask yourself “If I could only carry 5 items with me at all times, what would they be?”
If you don’t want to carry all of the gear on a split key ring there are other systems. You can use a key ring carabiner or a small stainless steel stamped D shackle. Both will give you more room to add gear when you need to.
You can also add things to your main key ring with 550 paracord. For instance, if your main vehicles key is on a long paracord looped through the key ring, you can remove it and put it around your neck for easier access.
The combinations of how you can put together your EDC key ring are many. Have fun putting one together and keep on tweaking it until you are satisfied that you have the most useful key ring of anyone that you know.
