Appear as non-threatening as possible
Even if it goes against everything you believe, it does not hurt to show sympathy to your captor. But, it's also important to note that this should be done with a light hand ie do not go overboard or risk your efforts being viewed as manipulation. This is especially dangerous if your captor is paranoid and sufferers from delusions, he or she might think that you are plotting against them and escalate the situation.
It is also important to note that you should not try to convince the bad guy that his or her beliefs are unfounded or delusional. To them, it makes perfect sense and it will be hard for you to sway him or her from this train of thought.
Only speak when spoken to
If the captor speaks to you, by all means answer any questions he or she may have – without becoming aggressive. If you are charged with speaking to the police over the telephone, answer questions with a simple yes or no.
Escape if you can
Believe it or not, it is recommended that you try to escape when in a host situation. Based on information from Sanford Strong, an author and SWAT team instructor, the escape of any host may prevent the situation from getting worse. If the terrorist responds badly and kills someone, then most likely none of the hostages will leave the situation alive. It is important to remember that running away does not mean that you are abandoning the other captives, but rather that you are employing the best survival option to save everyone's life.
Remain calm even when the rescue team arrives on the scene
When the first responders arrive on the scene, they are not fully aware of who's a friend or who's a foe. So, it's important that you remain calm and agree with any directions that that the troops have for you, even if they want you to remain restrained until they are able to verify that you are not a threat. It is also important to note that you should stay down unless you are directed otherwise. There have been hostage situations in the past where standing up unexpectedly has caused host situations to escalate.
Communicate with your fellow captive
In a host situation or terrorist attack, communicating with the other captives in your immediate area can be quite helpful. But it's also important to note that this should be done quietly and discretely, preferably with notes. Furthermore, you should be suspicious of any notes that you may find because you do not know if the person who dropped the message is your friend or foe. If it's possible, try to work out a code with the other captives so that your communications are kept private.
Necessity is the mother of all invention
It is important that you avoid confrontation at all costs but if fighting is your only way out, then make sure that you are kindly armed with sharp objects like pens or keys. Also, if you wrap a leather belt around your arm, it will protect you from being stabbed and it can be used to tie up an unconscious hostage taker.
If necessary, take the lead
It is important to be aware of your surroundings. If you are the most prepared person in the room you may be called on to provide direction and comfort. While this is a great honor, it's also important to remain calm and to keep those around you calm because, contrary to what you think, panic is the enemy.
The Bottom Line
With tensions between the East and the West rising every day, it's only a matter of time till the mass shootings and terrorist attacks increase even more. Thankfully, being prepared can help you come out alive.
