Wild Edibles, Survival Fishing For Your Food

admin By admin January 3, 2019

Wild edibles can include some survival fishing skills in addition to plant knowledge. Most of the time when people think about wild edibles they are thinking about plant life but there is much available in the wilderness that goes way beyond plants. It’s a good thing too because you would have to know a lot about a huge variety of plants to get the nourishment you need and not all plants are available in all areas. I think it is a good idea to make sure you know how to hunt, trap and fish as well. This article will focus on some basic fishing skills that can be used by anybody in an environment where there may be fish available as a food source.

Tools

There are certain tools needed for fishing that will include at least the following items:

  • Fishing line
  • Fish hook
  • Sinker

With these basic tools you can catch a fish and all of these can be made with what nature offers you. You can create your own line with cordage from a number of plants including common milkweed, dogbane, stinging nettle, fireweed and evening primrose. You can also use the bark from some trees including basswood, elm, walnut, cherry, cedar, aspen, willow and ash. You might be surprised how well this natural cordage will work as a fish line. A small rock will work as a sinker and properly formed a small sharp stick can work well as a fish hook.

Location

One of the next things to think about is the scene for your fishing. Rivers, streams, ponds and lakes are someof the options that may be available to you. If it takes you an hour or two to create 6 feet of cord then you might want to find a place along a stream where you can tie your cord to a willow and let it hang into a hole. If your water is a lake then you might need a bit more cordage or perhaps you can wade out a bit and place the line with a rock to hold it in place. Another option for lake fishing is to find a large stick that will float or preferably a water bottle or similar item that will stay afloat. Being aware of your location and the fishing options available to you will help in knowing what you can do to survive.

Knowledge

Knowing what to do when in a survival situation is extremely important. If you are prepared with the knowhow to create your own cord, create a hook and locate a prime fishing location then you will have more confidence about your options for survival.

Action

If we plan on using fishing as a survival tool or resource but we never practice these skills then we don’t truly have the knowledge and experience necessary during an emergency situation.
